Speaking of bad CGI being over-used, I'm watching the Hobbit 2 on Blu-Ray just now and some of the effects are incredibly bad - like early 90s bad. When I saw it in theater, I saw it in 3D, which makes bad CGI look a lot better, because it adds realism but in 2D, it looks totally horrible. And even some of the green-screen effects are just mindbogglingly bad - I even noticed a clear black matteline-like outline around Bilbo in one shot and it's good 3-pixels-wide in 1080p.
And the whole film just looks somehow unrealistic - I think the frame-rate conversion from 48 to 24fps may be at fault there, or maybe it's the fact that the film's been shot digitally, I don't know - either way, it is a visual disaster, as a storytelling one.
That's a shame. Regardless, I'm holding out for the extended BD release that they usually do around Christmastime.
I really love this movie as well as the one before it; much more than the LotR trilogy.

I was going through a difficult time, and I like Wookiees. Cut me some slack? ;)
The second and third time were at the dollar theater. The third time I discovered they were showing Raiders later that evening, so I stuck around for that.
RotLA on 35mm?!

These are excellent Blu-ray and iTunes HD review websites with the anti-DNR/anti-EE/anti-teal&orange slant that we all know and love.

it might be some of what you are looking for
Excellent, thanks! I guess I'm just worried that they might have missed something. I trust the people around here more than people elsewhere on the web.
Does anyone have a comprehensive list of changes in the DVD/BD release?

Good idea. I can't find it, and some old images aren't showing up anymore.
K, sent.

As it buried back in a 68 page thread, it's going to take a while to find. ;)
Yep, same thinking here. Should I just PM him?

If you have time, do a quick capture of the spot that gave msycamore so much trouble? I'd like to finally nail down if it's something unusual with the LD master or an anomaly with my DVD recorder.
I'll gladly do a quick capture. Can you reply with a hyperlink to the post(s)?

Wow, very nice! Is this a single pass Runco LJR-II =(svideo)=> Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle clip? Or is it the median-of-three result?
The former. I just tossed the LD in, did a quick capture of ~5s, and took a frame from there to post.
I'll post some median-of-three samples when I actually do the capture(s). :-)

If Disney doesn't release the OOT, they deserve to be hated more than Lucas.

I keep hearing The Warriors theatrical is out there, but nobody can tell me for sure, or if it's got the original mono.
There's a nice HD (720p and 1080p) capture available on AMPS. I'm not sure if it has the original monomix, but it's definitely a capture of the theatrical cut.
Shoot me a PM if you want it, but you're not interested in joining.
We would like to get a hold of this "nice HD (1080p capture".
I'm trying to send you a PM, but it says I have to be on your friends list.
JEDIT: I sent the PM to You_Too and told him to forward it to you.
Now that I'm inching closer to capturing these damn LDs, I'd like to get some kind of team together for a non-raw release. (I will, of course, upload my raw captures to Usenet, as promised.)
At this point, I'm mostly interested in color-correction. I'd prefer to either have one blanket setting for the entire film or one setting for each (preferably, IP) reel.
I'm not one to go deep into post-processing. IVTC, color-correction, upscaling (for an anamorphic release), and maybe low-pass filtering (Y: ~5.5MHz, C: ~1.3 MHz) is all I'm interested in.
Shoot me a PM if you're interested in joining. Even if you only have knowledge to contribute, that's fine; the more, the merrier.

Thanks for the detailed reply, Harmy. I understand now! :-)

It would probably be best to lower the contrast in a non-linear way (e.g., lowering the contrast more in "dark" parts of the image and "less" in light parts). This wouldn't be too hard to accomplish with Avisynth.
Sounds good, but I thought the light parts are affected as well (considering there's a star destroyer in the background).
They don't have to be if you design your Avisynth function correctly.

So maybe the best solution is for Harmy to not remove them, but to lower the contrast significantly in his color-correction.
Does that sound like a reasonable compromise?
I guess he already did that but lowering the contrast has its limitations, especially if the damage was done during the transfer from analogue to digital material.

Maybe it was always there, but became noticeable only on Blu-ray due to high resolution.
Of course, it was always there. Otherwise, it wouldn't be identifiable as garbage mattes. The problem is that the contrast of those garbage mattes was increased by the remastering.

Is there any chance to get rid of those bright boxes around the Falcon and the TIE fighters at 00:36:42 - 00:36:44? This problem was much less prominent before Lowry "restored" the material though your workprint is already an improvement over 2004.
I don't have the WP downloaded. Are you, perhaps, referring to garbage mattes?
If so, then wouldn't garbage matte removal be a "specialization" rather than "despecialization"?
Not if the garbage mattes weren't visible in theatres in 1977, due to the differences in film projection vs modern systems.
In short, no.
Visibility would depend on the theater, no? I'm sure there were many crappy theaters in 1977/1980/1983 that used way-too-bright projection bulbs.
I've never had a good understanding of what exactly Harmy's intentions are with his Despecialized Editions. That is, is he shooting for (1) "what's on a theatrical print" or (2) "what would have been visible to the audience during the original theatrical run(s)"?
A good example of my confusion is illustrated by the fact that:
1. Harmy restored several compositing errors that were scrubbed away by Lowry's process for SW DeEd 2.0/2.1/2.5. Some of these were anomalies in a single frame that were likely not noticed by many during the original theatrical run(s).
2. Harmy did not restore all of the original wipes in SW DeEd 2.0/2.1/2.5 and, in many cases, left in the optical wipes that were created by Pacific Titles for the 97SE.
Harmy: I'm not trying to talk-down your work. I'm genuinely confused and I hope you can clear this up. As I've always stated: you do fantastic work and I'm consistently impressed with the quality of your output.
