Which version is better for the OT? Laserdisc or the limited edition 2006 2 disc dvd (GOUT)?

My budget is infinite. Which Ld player is the best?

Cool! A Pioneer HLD-X0. I suggest purchasing one from Nicholas Santini since he brings each one to Pioneer Japan to be looked over and aligned to spec. He's been doing this for a looonnnnggggg time and does his packaging really, really well.

Prior to his passing, my buddy Ty purchased one from him for ~$5K. IIRC, Nicholas gives you back ~$1K if you ship the original box back to him.

If you're going to get an X0, then I suggest you pair it with a PMS Crystalio II and then you'll be set.

Anyway to upgrade the laserdisc input into my TV?

There are many ways. What's your budget like? Are you looking for an all-in-one solution or are you willing to mix-and-match components to achieve the best results?

Most importantly: What kind of LD player do you intend on using? This will have the greatest overall impact on your end result due to the crap-in=>crap-out principle.

JEDIT: Also, please mention what TV you plan on using.

Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)

A little bit of an update. I contacted the current owner to ask about quality and this was the response:"I'd have to say it's a little wavy. It's watchable, but not pristine. But yeah, it looks like it's a couple of generations down." So is there still any interest in perusing this copy?

I think so. The waviness can easily be fixed with a Panasonic DMR-ES10.

I don't know much about the american releases, I have seen a few of them and all they did is that they resized and cropped the videos to HD dimensions + did some awful contrast/lighting/colour correction + censored some scenes. The best release so far is the Japanese Dragon Box in 4:3 standard dimensions with a really really bad audio quality.

I remembered wrongly about the 16mm prints.

These are the two "Level sets":

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dragon-Ball-Z-Level-1.2-Blu-ray/27576/

They were frame-by-frame restored from the 16mm masters. It truly sucks that they stopped producing them.

With that being said, let's move this discussion to here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Dragon-Ball-Best-of-Breed-hybridmaybe/topic/15938/

Alestat: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are two very different things. Molly was referring to Dragon Ball and, based on your mention of Kai, you're referring to Dragon Ball Z.

With that being said, the original 16mm prints of Dragon Ball Z were not lost. They were used as the source for the beautiful Level 1.1 and Level 1.2 blu-rays.

It's a damn shame that they decided to stop producing the "Level sets" and went back to releasing the heavily-DNR'd and cropped releases that they're putting out now.

Please, could someone help me out?

I hate to be that guy, but is using VLC an option?

I don't know why there's a big difference, but it worked perfectly! Thanks, AntcuFaalb.

Although, it looks a little different... I think I'll get used to it, but I have no idea why it does.

Well, VLC does all decoding itself. It doesn't rely on any third-party (relative to VLC) codecs. MPC, IIRC, relies on what's installed on your system which may or may not work correctly.

With that being said, how does it look different in VLC? Can you provide a more detailed explanation?

One possibility is a difference in H.264 post-processing.

The 12th Doctor is the only Doctor I can't stand and so I don't care what happens to him and so I don't care about the story any more.

FWIW: I hated Matt Smith's Doctor, but I stuck with the show anyway and I'm glad I did because I think the current Doctor is amazing. If you've stuck with Who this long, then why not just ride it out? You won't be lost, then, if the next Doctor is more to your liking.

Now maybe you think turning The Doctor into Jigsaw from the Saw movies makes the show more adult

I don't, but it does sound like a cool idea for a fan film.

I have to deal with lots of hard gray decisions and situations at work and in life. I come to science fiction for entertainment and neither want nor expect complex/deep plots with a "figure it out for yourself" moral structure.

My favorite Star Wars film is Return of the Jedi, so no, I clearly don't want to make Doctor Who or any science fiction more "adult" than it already is.

Thank you this isn't a dark story about gangsters and killers. if that is what you want to watch then you are not a fan of Doctor Who,because you want the show to be something it is not.

I never claimed to want the show to be this way. I simply questioned why the likability and relatability of The Doctor is necessary for yourself (and others) to derive enjoyment from the show.

I got my answer. It's a shame that it took so many words, but I think I now have a solid understanding of where you and Warbler are coming from.

The Doctor is the hero of the series, he is supposed to be likeable.

This gets to the root of my question: Why?

I don't think "that's the way it always has been" is a good excuse to not change things when the time comes to make a decision.

The Doctor is supposed to be a dynamic character, no? Maybe this unlikable Doctor will learn something in the course of doing unlikable un-Doctor-y things and his next regeneration will pop out someone much more down-to-Earth.

Sorry I just have yet to see a single likable or relatable character trait in the 12th Doctor so I am not enjoying his time on the show.

Why is it necessary for the Doctor to be likable or relatable for you to enjoy the show?

I see this a lot when people discuss Once Upon a Time in America. None of the characters are likable because they're not supposed to be.

The Doctor is an alien, so maybe it's a fluke that his previous incarnations were likable and relatable. Maybe this Doctor isn't supposed to be likable at all.

David "Noodles" Aaronson is a prick who rapes two women in Once Upon a Time in America. He's a piece of shit, but this doesn't keep me from enjoying his story. It's a masterpiece.
