Well, while I wait for myspleen to come back, I thought I would post the pdf I made as a guide for Version 2.0.

Enjoy!

here

Wow, this is excellent! I really enjoyed looking through it and I think it'll serve its purpose rather well.

I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again: This project is an amazing accomplishment. Thank you for all of your hard work.

I'm guessing things must be busy, but any progress on the laserdisc capture/assembly (or is it "stand by scope one")?

Good! I finally have a working Usenet upload workflow on my Mac OS X box (7z, par2, and sanguinews), so I plan to upload the raw soon.

The MatchGrade operation in [an excellent program] is able to calibrate the color bars I captured from GGV1069 with the Runco LJR-II perfectly. I plan to have it write out an LUT that I can then use to calibrate all of my captures. I'll upload this LUT alongside the raw when I post to a.b.sw.

I've had the temporal alignment done for a while now. I want to stick in 10-bit, so I'm going to have to find some way to accomplish that transformation using 10-bit-friendly software. That's what I'm working on now.

Should I buy the Original Trilogy Blu ray? I already have the 2004 DVD.

I agree that some changes made by George weren't for the better but he just wanted to make it look as similar as the prequels.

1. The Special Editions came out before the prequels (1997 vs 1999, respectively).

2. It's not about "better" or "worse". It's about preserving film history. The Special Editions didn't win all of those Academy Awards way back when; the originals did.

Would you be OK with Leonardo da Vinci suddenly coming back to life and painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa? Most people wouldn't, especially if the original were destroyed in consequence.

Art has value in its original form.

Guys why do you prefer the Original Version when the Special Editions have improved CGIs?

Is this a joke?

I'm just 15, I grew up with the special edition and the prequels. :)

We have a few 97SE and PT fans here and I can totally respect your preference.

With that being said, you must understand that many (most, perhaps) fans here consider the Special Editions to be garbage for one reason or another.

We probably wouldn't care about the SEs if the original-originals were given the same treatment and respect by LFL, but they weren't.

My opinion: "Improved CGIs" don't belong in a film released in 1977.

Ok, I finished the 5.1 track for the Theatrical TPM.  It's synchronized with the DVD at each of the side changes.  In total only about 1.4 seconds of audio (44 ac3 frames) has been patched in from the theatrical DTS mixes.  The entire rest of the track is untouched ac3 direct from the LD's.  It's perfectly seemless and you'd never recognize the transitions.

I will be getting the files organized and sorted this weekend and ready to post this week!

Yay! Thanks!!!

Which version is better for the OT? Laserdisc or the limited edition 2006 2 disc dvd (GOUT)?

Some of the DNR trails can be eliminated, as Harmy shows in his DED, where you use the background as a custom matte and just have the object move over top that. I'm surprised no one has done this with just the GOUT already. Granted, that only fixes a few shots, but it would look over all better.

One might as well go full-Harmy at that point.

So I'm just curious, is it really worth it to pay $5k for a Laserdisc player? How much more quality could you possibly pull out of a Laserdisc? Isn't it still going to top out at lower quality than DVD? I mean, Laserdisc is awesome, but not THAT awesome.

The best you can get with an excellent LD player and a well-mastered LD is PQ roughly equivalent to a 90s non-anamorphic DVD.

I'm not unrealistic and I wouldn't pay $5K for an LD player, but everyone has different priorities. If one has 10,000 LDs, for instance, then I can totally see the logic in purchasing an X0 to play them.

I thought the idea behind their project was that the GOUT, even for all its flaws, is the best version of the unaltered trilogy that has thus far been officially released, but some comments made in this discussion are making me think otherwise

Here's the thing: If you consider MPEG-2 artifacts and halved chroma resolution to be negligible*, then the GOUT is demonstrably better than the DefCol/Faces LDs since it was derived from the D-1 master used to create said LDs.

With that being said, the crux of this debate is the DVNR. Many—myself included—consider the JSC to look better than the DefCol/Faces/GOUT since it resolves a hell of a lot better in motion, doesn't have DVNR artifacts (e.g. four-eyed stormtroopers), and has much better colors overall.

On the flip-side, the JSC shows much more dirt and film damage, has wonky breaks in 3:2-pulldown cadence, and doesn't resolve as well as the DefCol/Faces/GOUT in still and low motion shots. Plus, you need good equipment to get good results.

This whole thing reduces to "pick your poison" and many choose to take the Harmy antidote instead. That's cool.

(* MPEG-2 YV12 simply isn't enough given the source.)
