Info Wanted: Frame differences in different projects?
Time

CatBus said:

What I'd like to know is if there is any way, other than manually comparing a couple hundred thousand still images against each other, to do this frame comparison for any two given releases?

Diffing the begin-shot-change numbers is one (pretty good; not perfect) way to tell if two sources are in sync. (Empty diff => all shots in both sources begin at the same frame number.)

If the two sources are sufficiently similar, then it's a 99% guarantee.

I can give further instructions if you're interested.

The GOUT Sync Thread
Time

I'm thinking about spending some time this weekend doing automated analysis of NTSC and PAL GOUT. I want to make sure we've found all of the unintentionally-interlaced frames and that the two are truly in sync after making the changes you suggest, Chewtobacca.

I plan on using FFmpeg's idet filter for checking the former. The latter can be checked by diffing files containing the begin-shot-change numbers from each source.

I'm out of it for a little while, and everyone has delusions of grandeur.

It's surprising how well engaging in different and interesting work prevents burnout.

The ability to switch things up when you get bored (rather than watching TV, etc.) keeps your head in the game and—in my experience—has a significant positive impact on productivity.

The JSC is so much sharper than the Technidisc SWE, as expected. It's crazy.

The sharpness of the JSC feels very artificial to me, and the chroma shift gets really annoying.

Every transfer has pros and cons =(

Are we sure it's real chroma shift? I thought the chroma problems were linked to the laggy comb filter in Arnie.d's Pioneer HLD-X9.

I managed to get it for a total of $32 (including S&H!). Expect a capture of the monomix sometime soon!

Well, not soon, but I am capturing right now. I plan to release this with the 5.1 70mm mix from the 1997 DVD and the 2.0 (down?)mix from the other side.

Capturing or a bit perfect rip? if rip can I get the links to the 3 tracks you mentioned? also this is theatrical not extended correct?

Thanks

Capturing. Yes, theatrical.

This can't be a bit perfect rip because this LD has no digital sound. It's one of the early ones with analog sound only: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/44957/10JL-1007

The other two are, of course, bit perfect because they're the AC-3 tracks from the 1997 DVD. I demuxed them twice off the DVD and compared checksums to make sure I got a perfect copy of each.

Still interested?

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

So, just wanted to throw this out there -

My step-dad really hates letterbox releases. As a gift to him, I am taking the Despecialized Trilogy and going through, shot by shot, to create a 16:9 Pan and Scan version. Would anyone here be interested in a release of that? (pending Harmy's approval, of course)

Have you considered using a non-linear scaling algorithm (e.g., "wide zoom") instead?
