Star Wars Trilogy 7" 33 1/3 book and record set (Released)

The 12" Story of LPs have already been captured and released at 24bit and 16bit.

I concur that the audio files should be WAV or FLAC. Both are uncompressed file formats, the latter being smaller in size.

It's better to work with WAV while you're working because this format will work more easily with audacity, audition, etc

Including ROTJ in 24-bit?

I thought that 7FN's was the first 24-bit capture and his set didn't include ROTJ...

Comb Filters

I might be showing my ignorance, but if you use the composite connections (Video, Audio L & R), you wouldn't be using the comb filter.

The comb filter is only used for the S-Video connection.........right?

:?

Well, a comb filter can be applied to any signal. There are even software comb filters available in AviSynth; e.g., TComb.

However, it's my understanding that, in hardware, it's usually the opposite of what you mentioned. That is, comb filters are applied to composite video sources because the luma and chroma aren't separated (unlike S-Video), which results in dot crawl and rainbowing artifacts.

Simple frame-blending can be undone...

Yes, but it has to be pretty simple. Most cases of frame blending involve decimation as well (i.e. NTSC to PAL) where you have only 5 frames for every 6 original frames. The blending effects can be improved, but you can never get the original 6 frames back. The analogy in audio is that you apply a low-pass filter and downsample. You can mitigate some of the low-pass filter, but you can never get the information above half of the new sampling rate back.

Not entirely relavent, but just pointing out that you are USUALLY screwed. ;)

Unfortunately, you're right :-(

What's the state of comb filters in capture cards today?

Are they much better than the comb filters present in the laserdisc players of yesteryear? If so, would it be wise to get a laserdisc player that doesn't have its own comb filter (assuming that it's an otherwise excellent player) and rely on the comb filter in my capture card?

My current, and preferred, capture card is a Hauppauge 610 USB-Live2.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Well, actually, film in the 70s had the same resolution as today and higher then most digital cameras today, so a proper modern 4K scan of the original negative should actually provide much more detail.

I remember people making even stronger statements on TFN. Some have even claimed that GOUT is the best possible preservation of the OT due to "70s film limitations" or some nonsense.

I don't intend to sound arrogant here, but what do these people think? Do they think that 70s audiences sat and watched Laserdisc-quality films on the huge screen of the local cinema?

What's next? Is the VHS of The Wizard of Oz the best possible preservation due to "30s film limitations"?

Does it match the cropping of Video Collectors' ROTJ_TP and Treadwell's TWC328_ROTJB?  (which share a common origin, but are multiple reproductions away from each other)

When you say first generations, is that one removed from the source reproduction, or is this the believed first copy?  Where did this tape source from geographically?  PAL/NTSC?  One of the main RotJ bootleg stories was the Hastings heist.  Where LFL/Fox put out a bounty for the prints return:  (Babyhum's BH018 has some news reports on the story)

all i know is this is the first generation NTSC tape.

it is not a copy.

ok, we got usenet taken care of..

The colors are still shifted.

Or whatever you want to call it. You can see how the color information is further to the right than it should be. I tried going into Photoshop once and shifting it to the left, but it only made it look kind-of better.

Really? I'm not seeing it...

Can you post something from that image to demonstrate the chroma shift?

Also, note that the colors in X9 are smeared, so changing them to being simply shifted would be an improvement!

OK, using Dark/Sega's chroma with X9's luma works wonderfully.

Observations:

  1. X9's letterbox is 8 pixels higher than Dark/Sega's.
  2. X9 is exactly 7 fields ahead of Dark/Sega.
  3. Either Dark/Sega looks too dark or X9 looks too bright.

(Note: I've only played with side #1, so these observations may not apply to the whole video.)

The following is a sample image of X9's luma + Dark/Sega's chroma. I'm too tired to post more than one, but I'll be sure to tomorrow if anyone's interested...

anyone out there interested?

I'm interested!

I agree that $134 is expensive for that set, so I'd like to offer some advice as an individual already knee-deep in expensive equipment, materials, and time needed for a preservation project.

First, and foremost, be 100% certain of your motivation(s). Are you more intrinsically or extrinsically motivated to do this preservation project? A good question to ask yourself in making this determination is: will I do this even if nobody is interested?

Second, know that releasing a preservation project is usually a thankless affair. It's unfortunate, but most downloaders of anything you release will probably do little to demonstrate their appreciation. Big projects like Harmy's seem to get a lot of replies, but they only seem that way because the scale is huge; e.g., thousands or hundreds-of-thousands of downloads.

An OT member found this out the hard way recently and, in response, suspended his efforts. Will you do the same if 100 people download your release, but nobody leaves as much as a simple ``thanks!''? I doubt that would happen around here, but it's something for which you've to be prepared.

OT resembles a gift culture (like the Free and Open Source Software movement), but anonymous downloading corrodes the very fabric upon which such a culture is built. You need tough skin and a ratio of intrinsic:extrinsic motivation that's greater than 1 to be happy with releasing a preservation project intended for this community.

This kind of problem impacts other online communities similar to OT, but I believe OT is the best (woohoo! :-) of the lot.

(My own stance on this is unique enough to share. I'm intrinsically motivated (mostly), as I'm an archivist at heart, so I view releasing as doing something similar to a giant distributed backup. A lack of appreciation from OTers wouldn't bother me much because I'm doing my preservation projects for me and the downloaders are doing my backups for free!)

Please consider the aforementioned prior to making any decisions related to this (or future) preservation projects.

If you choose to continue, then that would be great! You'll have, at least, as many of my resources and as much of my support as I can give. I'm sure other OTers would offer the same.

Dark/Sega has pulldown frames stored in YV12 space, so after IVTC you'll find some combed chroma like Moth3r described.
That's why I chose selectEvery(10) in my IVTC scripts for those
instead of using selectEvery(5) a.k.a. pulldown().
That way the telecine 3's can avoid the problem, however half of the 2's are still affected no matter what.
So every fourth frame in the progressive stream will be suspect.

Thanks for the information, Darth Mallwalker!

Do you know if DJ captured in YV12?
