I'm convinced that the settings for the comb filter don't do anything.  If you figure out how to make it work please let me know.  Can you explain the jump that you are talking about? Do you mean like a single frame jumping up or down once in awhile or a series of frames?  Have you posted any screenshots yet?

No screenshots yet, but I will post some when I get home tonight.

The jump is weird. It looks like the odd field moves up several lines for 1 frame.

I played with my Diamond ATI Theater HD 750 USB capture card earlier. I connected my Panasonic DVD-S29 (an excellent DVD player that outputs full chroma resolution via its analog outputs) and captured some patterns from my Digital Video Essentials DVD over composite.

I captured the pluge pattern, so I'll be able to determine if the AGC issue is indeed present sometime tomorrow evening.

I also captured the Snell & Wilcox Zone Plate to examine the 3D comb filter. It's not anywhere near as good as the 3D comb filter in the Panasonic DMR-ES10, but unlike the DMR-ES10, it switches from 3D to 2D smoothly, so that's a plus.

Unfortunately, the 5-line 2D comb filter cuts a lot of diagonal resolution from the "/" square, but manages to retain the diagonal resolution of the "\" square, which I find weird. What's also odd is that there's almost no rainbowing in the "\" square, but a lot of rainbowing in the "/" square and that manages to hide visibility of the loss of diagonal resolution from that square.

I was unable to see any difference resulting from modifying the comb filter settings. Do these even do anything? Have any of you managed to see a difference?

I also noticed an irregular "jump" happen every once in a while. In fact, it happened too often to not notice. Have any of you noticed something similar?

"What's it really about?" Subtle themes in films.
Time

This type of analysis certainly has merit, but it's not enough.

It's one thing to say that a major underlying influence of movie X is Y, but it's another thing to reduce X to an advertisement for or against Y.

A film critic needs to be able to recognize these major underlying influences without being blinded by them.

Star Wars was certainly influenced by young George Lucas' (Luke) struggle against the studios (The Empire), but one would be hard-pressed to claim that that's what Star Wars is "really about".

So, I think it's important to recognize these major underlying influences, but one's analysis shouldn't stop there.

It will take about 2-3 weeks for the print to get to me in Australia, and then about a month to do a proper capture.

Because I capture in mono, I get 3 images per frame, a Red, Blue and Green image. These then have to be combined to make a single colour image.

I also do 3 captures and average them to remove CCD noise etc. and then an extra capture underexposed and another overexposed in case it is required. That all takes a while.

But yes, I will be selling the print when I have squeezed everything I can out of it.

This is so exciting, and deserves its own thread in my opinion!

I agree. I'll shoot poita an e-mail regarding this.

I really should have figured out by now that Fridays frozen dinner/snack things are horrible. They give me the absolute worst indigestion... and only having coffee this morning so far isn't helping haha.

But seriously though, cheese nuggets. Not worth the trouble for me anymore.

White Castle makes me forget that I get sick from eating White Castle food every time.

I just remembered now. Let's see how long it lasts this time.

HAPPY 10TH ANNIVERSARY OT.COM!!!!!!!!!!!!!(was: When is/was the OT.com 10th anniversary?)
Time

Happy (belated) Birthday, OT.com!

I'm still a "new" guy here, but it feels like I've been around for ages. Maybe.

I've made some close friends here (You_Too, in particular) and I've managed to start a bunch of preservation projects that will probably take me ages to complete. Needless to say, I love it here.

My favorite memory of OT.com is when TV's Frink called me his hero. :-)

Good times. Stay calibrated, my friends.

^I suppose, what Im saying is if he gets the raw capture done he can get it back up for sale, he has to feed his kids! I believe celluloid isnt that great for eating.

Oh, I agree 100%.

I was just trying to point out that it's possible to get the raw capture done crappily and poita has said something to that effect to me outside of the forum in the past.

SShhh dont tell the other half.

Poita why not digitise it asap and then throw it back on fleabay, because of the price it went for it should defo get to that price again to get your money back, so long as you do a quick turnaround as it were, strike while the irons hot!

Digitization is still time-consuming. You have to get the exposure right, etc.

I went way over what I could afford, but I nabbed it in the end. Hopefully it will be worth it - feeding your kids is over-rated anyway.

Silverwook, I know the seller that print originally came from, so at least I had some idea of its quality and heritage so to speak, but yeah, I went way over budget.

This is awesome! I'm glad to know it's in good hands.

We are looking into some more references. There is a derann 8mm possibility.

Team Negative1

Maybe this is a dumb question, but what are you hoping to use this print for?  A color reference?

The Derann Super8 prints use a very low-fade stock. Furthermore, they're "new", as they were made in the late 80s/early 90s.
