Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

OK, lets talk color references, because this time around, I'll be doing a 1st pass color correction before anything else. I'm sort of still inclined towards saturation boosted GOUT with red balance compensated for as a main source. There's Puggo Grande of course but I looked it over and I'm not sure I really want to use it as my main color reference. Was the original film really THAT blue? Are there any other reliable references?

The 1985 CAV P&S LD of The Empire Strikes Back might be a good color reference.

I know that the 1985 CAV P&S LD of A New Hope has surprisingly-accurate colors, as it was pressed from a 1982 master.

On the bottom of the back of my BD covers, I'm putting "'Despecialized' Restoration by HARMY" under the credits.

Should it say "preservation", "restoration", or "remaster" or anything different instead? I 'm not sure I want to put "edition". This is the theatrical edition in HD. Somehow saying "edition" makes it sound more like an edit, which it is not.

"Theatrical Restoration (Despecialized) by Harmy, Remastered" seems to be most accurate.

Just make sure not to say preservation.

Those should be just pretty small files though, right? Just some analysis info or something like that, so it shouldn't really slow down the 2nd pass if they're on the same disc as the source or output files. I don't know if it even does save any other temp files. Maybe it doesn't.

They're relatively small, yes. Furthermore, reading from them and writing to them is typically done sequentially, which is sped up by the cache in your HDD, so that wouldn't be your bottleneck.

What speed problems are you having?

I work as a Computer Programmer, but I worked as a Systems Administrator for a number of years, so I might be able to help.

I'd prefer to get away from the Jedi vs. X type of story. Why can't the Jedi Order come back into existence without having to defend itself from being wiped out?

Instead, I'd really like another JabbaTheHutt-like character to be the main "villain".

I'd like to see Jedi & friends traipsing through underground dens of vile gangsters, reestablishing themselves as keepers of peace.

Most of all, I'd like some subtle humor and lightheartedness, a good character-driven story, and a sense that the movie doesn't take itself too seriously (whatever the hell that means).

Also, real puppets, please.

There was a rumour that these split lightsabre shots were corrected on the Faces set, but then again I seem to recall someone proving that this was not the case.

I grew up with "Faces" and never noticed any split-lightsabers, even after watching the trilogy many many times. I have a good eye for this kind of thing.

I'll grab the X0 raw capture of the DC tonight, do a quick IVTC and GOUT-sync, and then do a side-by-side comparison.

A bunch of shots were replaced from non-DVNR sources when making the master for the '95 THX "Faces" release from that of the '93 Definitive Collection (DC).

Most of these replacements were to correct split-lightsabers, as these were easily visible and many people complained about them after the release of the DC.

Can we somehow come up with a list of them?

They're typically much dirtier than other (surrounding) shots and in one case, at least, the framing is different.

So let me ask you guys a question. If I was a Star Wars purist what is the definitive audio track? I have heard that The Beatles in mono is considered the "pure" experience over the stereo track, is this similar for Star Wars or are all audio options equal?

Don't try to be a purist. Choose the mix that sounds most pleasing to your ears.

I prefer to listen to the mono mix because it's so different from what I grew up with: the 1993 stereo mix on the THX "Faces" set. Also, I only have access to 2.0 speaker configurations.

Do you have a surround-sound setup?

Further tweaking to any of the 5.1 tracks will be minimal, and would be done as much for the sake of my learning to work with professional software as any other reason.  ESB and RotJ may benefit somewhat from the inclusion of lossless LFE from the 2011 Blurays, but even that won't make a huge difference in sound quality: much more of an improvement could be heard if the user upgrades to a hifi subwoofer and plays the current lossy version over that.  ;)

Just to clarify: Do you plan on fixing and GOUT-sync'ing schorman13's digital '77, '80, and '83 2.0 LD rip mixes or...?

Forgive me if this was ambitiously-worded... ^_^

I think this all boils down to what questions are being asked prior to and during the movie-making process.

Pre-1977 George Lucas: How can I use the resources at my disposal to put what I'm seeing in my head on film?
Disney Today: What will make the most money?

Usually the former results in a good character-driven story and the latter results in lots of flash with little substance.

Anecdote: I met what I'd consider to be a big-but-not-insane Star Wars fan at a book store recently and we got to talking. He told me that his favorite of the prequels is Episode II because he "finally got to see Yoda fighting with a lightsaber" (verbatim). 'Nuff said? I think so.

Interesting, so the PAL DVDs are definitely NOT just resized NTSC masters as previously suggested ?

They're definitely from the same master, as they have the same center-distortion and one registers perfectly to the other in even the crappiest image registration program.

It seems to me that the PAL GOUT release wrt to resizing, etc. was a hack-job, at best.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>
Time

Joral: There's praise for this fan edit because it's the SE-done-right.

George's edits were randomly chosen, tasteless, and poorly implemented.

Examples:

1. randomly chosen: Reduction of matte lines in one shot, but not in the next shot. This inconsistent "modernization" is all over the SEs.

2. tasteless: Rocks in front of R2-D2... 'nuff said.

3. poorly implemented: Look at the messy colors of the 2004 DVD. Look at the terrible Jabba scene in ANH SE. I can go on and on with this one, but you get the point.

Adywan's edits are not like this at all. I invite you to prove me wrong, but please try to form a coherent argument against them, OK? ;)

The colours, and the level of detail (is there some sharpening going on along with the upscale?) you've managed to dig out of the murky GOUT video are really impressive.

It's a shame that there still residual DVNR smearing and aliasing that you can't do anything about. Please do share your script when you're done, because I'd be interested in testing it out on a capture of the PAL laserdisc.

To demonstrate how nice these colours are, I've added downscaled screenshots (1-3 only) to my comparison page here: http://moth3r.heliohost.org/dvd-screens.htm

There is sharpening (via MSharpen), but it's subtle.

Mostly, however, I find it's You_Too's colors that really bring out the "hidden" details.

Although, as with the infamous Mos Eisley pass by shot there's the trouble with the actual speeder element ending up being somewhat less detailed. :(

How does the 1985 CAV P&S LD look here? I'm not home right now, so I can't check my copy.

If there's a frame with a full shot of the speeder, then Harmy could use that to replace the Technidisc or GOUT speeder (via tracking, etc.) with a much more detailed "model".
