Help: Looking for... a good transfer of the first issue Pan And Scan Laserdisc for Star Wars
Time

I have a copy of the 1982 rental VHS in pristine condition.

I plan to do a transfer soon with the following setup:

Panasonic AG-1980 =(s-video)=> Panasonic DMR-ES10 =(s-video)=> Hauppauge USB-Live2 Capture Card

I also have a copy of the 1985 CAV LD (same master). I'll do a preservation of that when my Panasonic LX-900 comes back from Duncan of laserdiscservice.com.

No one preserved the video it would have had Japanese subtitles stepping all over the picture but as a sync guide i guess it would have some use.

I know about the subtitles in the video.

I'm saying that I could GOUT-sync the audio by GOUT-sync'ing the video and then getting rid of the video, leaving only the GOUT-sync'd audio remaining.

Cuts and blank frames added to the video would show up as (impossible to notice) cuts and silence in the audio, respectively.

I thought it was pretty much a given the Best BD so far was the Japanese release.  Over the US Skynet.

The Super Expensive blu ray Dark Jedi owns.

It resolves the grain slightly better than the UK disc, but there is not much in it. Not for the price and 100%not with that master. But compared to the skynet I would take my Japanese laserdisc.

Is it the Anamorphic Squeeze Disc , i always wondered what that looked like the japan LD.

My buddy from LDDB (disclord) just got a copy. He said it looks amazing.

Was not the Terminator before the new BD ever recolor timed?  I mean to match the second film.  Seems to be something they do these days as they did it with the Matrix and Lord of the Rings.

It certainly wasn't in every LD and DVD release (I own 'em all).

Also, FWIW, the first LD release was struck right off a theatrical print; cue marks and all.

See, I'm 24, which is just about older by enough to have been exposed to the original version first and that seems to have made quite a difference to my perception of things.

It's not an age thing.  There are people here younger than Mr. 20-Year-Old who get it.

True.

FWIW: I've known some surprisingly-immature twenty year-olds.

The THX Ultimate Demo disc contains the Wow sequence that was previously used on a demo laserdisc. While it's interesting to compare the colours (no clipped whites, unlike the GOUT DVD) it's no real use for projects as the fast-paced editing means there are no complete shots in the sequence.

Wow! There isn't a single complete shot?

That sucks. Thanks for the information.

Wow lol, how does this stuff go unnoticed at the studios that prepare these blu ray masters?

The studios might send their materials to dedicated post-houses rather than doing the post-processing in-house.

Here's the thing: If you spend X dollars on post-production work and the post-house does it wrong, then you still have to spend Y dollars to have them fix it to your specification.

Considering that most studios are giant bureaucracies, then it stands to reason that the extra expenditure of Y dollars usually can't be justified.

Furthermore, I'd bet that untrained eyes are used to evaluate the final product coming out of the post-house in most cases.

JEDIT: ... and untrained eyes are usually impressed with shit like the BttF Trilogy BD release.

Idea & Info: Cinerama 70mm '2001' preservation. Is it possible?
Time

This definitely sounds like an interesting project.

The first step would be to do an excellent preservation of the MGM CAV 25th Anniversary Box Set.

Colortiming can be corrected on a shot-by-shot basis using a two-step method:

1  Rough: shot-by-shot using g-force's RGBMatch Avisynth function.

2. Final: shot-by-shot using the skills and eyes of an experienced colorist.

The first step gets you pretty close, but the second is necessary to deal with potential problems arising from the first.

I work at a high school. Walking onto campus this morning in the parking lot a couple of big senior football player types were talking loudly. It was all "f-word" this and "n-word" that, which I generally find distasteful.

As I passed them, it turned out they were talking about "Dragonball Z" which somehow made it hilarious.

lol!
