Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

I hope this is not a consideration already brought up, but has anyone seen the main feature of the THX DTS disc? It includes clips from the Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones trilogy, and Willow, and I am fairly certain the clips from Star Wars are pre-1997 Special Edition (no nuclear ring from Death Star explosion). Also, since it is DVD, the clips are of very good quality, and I'd imagine this is how the Star Wars trilogy would have looked on DVD before the Special Edition releases. Maybe I am late to the game here, but would it be of any use for further preservation consideration?

I found the disc on the 'spleen recently.

It sounds to me like it's a DVD version of the "THX WOW!" laserdisc.

It might be useful for some of the GOUT-based projects around here. I'll download it tonight.

Raiders already has the Wowow HDTV versions so we have the original timing

There's some debate over whether or not RotLA has the original colortiming in its BD release.

I think it does, but I can understand why people would disagree with me.

I know they're not the best source, but I've seen enough original RotLA 35mm cells to think that the BD is more accurate than previous home video releases.

Plus, wouldn't the post-house have chosen teal-and-orange over yellow? :-P

I am 20. Really though, I wish George never changed anything, because as neat as some changes are (I'm very fond of the new Jedi ending music), others are awful, and none are worth the issues among fans that arose from the changes.

I doubt you care, but you have earned -- at least -- my respect with this statement.

20th Century Fox should have been renamed 21st Century Fox.
As a kid I thought the name was in reference to the future, once I realized that I was already in the 20th century, I thought "they're going to look really stupid in a few years"

Even renaming to Fox Films or something.

20th Century Fox has that name because of the merger of Fox Films and 20th Century Pictures, Inc. in 1935.

Reverting to Fox Films might be OK today, however...

Hearing the word "sith" reminds me of everything that has been done to ruin Star Wars over the years.

I'm truly sick of this Jedi vs. X crap. It's terrible storytelling designed to appeal to babies.

Jedi, Sith/Dark Jedi, lightsabers, and "The Force" were all things used to move the plot along in the OT. That's right: they were used to move the plot along and they weren't the focus of the plot.

I guess I'm trying to say that seeing Jabba the fucking Hutt in ROTJ was a hell of a lot more interesting than seeing Yoda flipping around with a lightsaber and tossing junk with "The Force" in AOTC.

Am I the only one around here who enjoys having both the theatrical release and the special edition releases to watch? My problem with the special editions was not the changes that were made, but that the theatrical versions were not given equal effort for release on new mediums (DVD, BluRay).

My problem with the SE is that it was half-assed.

Remove matte outlines in this shot. OK!

Forget about the matte outlines in the 30 subsequent shots. Nobody will notice 'em! OK!

Forget blu-ray.com. That website is a joke.

Awesome project, guys. Keep up the good work!

We need this in stone somewhere

:-)

Well, don't get me wrong! I use it all the time to see if a particular Blu-ray transfer is good or not, especially when I'm out at a store like Best Buy.

The forum, however, is an entirely different story. It seems as though many of its members are willing to trade almost anything for higher bitrates and more "pop".

DNR? Edge enhancement? Revisionist colortiming? Suck on this.

The studios won't swallow my soul. Shop smart. Shop S-mart.

Anyone with a better method?

Not better, but different...

c = AVISource("SotS.avi") # Assumes c is 1920x1080 already.

c.Subtract(c.ResampleHQ(1280, 720).ResampleHQ(1920, 1080))

Basically: Downscale to 720p, upscale back to 1080p, and then subtract from the original 1080p clip. This should show what's lost rather well.

Star Wars has permeated so deeply into our culture, that would a be a tad difficult. ;)

True, but I was referring (vaguely) to the Star Wars we've had since ~1999. I think there's value in Disney trying to distance itself from that Star Wars.

It's hard to go back to basics when your audience comes in expecting a colorful lightsaber show with some mindless Jedi vs. X story.
