Woah, I was just asking about your and this edit in the month’s discussion thread. Can I get a link to your Improved Version when you’re willing to share? Thanks in advance!

It is the will of the force, young Padawan. You shall see hope. There is always hope.

My PM inbox and threads are a mess of PM requests. When I release the edit, I advice you to PM me so I don’t forget it. Cheers!

STAR WARS - Episode I - The Ancient Lore [Improved]

Alt text

Episode I is the best-looking of the three prequels, with a lot of devotion put into them from both the crew, actors as well as the director himself before he went all ludacris on digital moviemaking. It is also the most dull of the three prequels, with little to no character motivation or even plot explanation.

Some of you might remember my very enthustiastic restructering of The Phantom Menace, and although it was liked, it had plenty of faults.

The project burned me out for anything Episode I-related, and the sequel trilogy extinguished any flame left. Now that the Sequel trilogy is worse than anything from the prequels I have found the fire in my heart again to show people how good The Phantom Menace can be, and how much potential there is for the Prequel Trilogy beyond the first and very-hated chronological entry of Star Wars.

MISC AND PICTURES:

So, the decision to make The Ancient Lore canon-friendly with a higher accuracy will remain firm, and therefore many of the old plot decisions will be gone. The “new” music is also gone. The film needs its original identity.

As for other things;

The Phantom Menace was shot on film, with high browns, dark shadows and a cyan blue. The denoised, high bitrate Disney blu-ray’s and 4k’s are an abomonation and make the CGI look like wax, and the 35mm film prints are noisy and - at certain points - lack detail.

Therefore, the middle-point for me was to use the (not-denoised-/DNR-less-) version of the film; an upscaled HDTV Rip. Then, with my own custom color grading, the next step was to carefully replace and repurpose the original colors of the film (that have been lost since cinemas, except for the mentioned 35mm film print(s)).

This was also important so that today’s children, whom are used to clean screens and firm colors, was kept in the loop when watching The Ancient Lore.

As mentioned the original palette had dark browns, dark shadows and a cyan blue, whilst the DVD and onward versions have replaced the cyan blue with purple and the dark shadows with bright shadows. Also the orange has been toned down to something more pink.

And then to something more fun, which would be video.

The original filmprint has surprisingly dark shadows and colors, and this was important for me to mimic. I love the vintage style of it, but with a modern twist.

I also included a slightly new but unfinished tweak, which was to extend the Nute Gunray scene to also include the Queen of Naboo’s dialogue about the Ambassadors. I find it more thrilling to the story to have them deny their presence whilst they are in the ship, unknowing of the present danger.

CHANGES:

  • A new and improved source (Downscaled 4k footage (1080p) for more detail)
  • A new color grade that better suit the Prequel Trilogy, and that utilizes keyframe grading to better support outdated CGI backgrounds).
  • Maintain the original musical score identity, with few alterations.
  • Fixed new CGI added for The Ancient Lore. This including for instance Sidious hologram on Tattooine, some background details have been refined and improved, and of course re-graded certain scenes to a much better effect that both fit the film more as well as better mask stand-out effects in the background.
  • Improved pacing (by actually adding a little bit more footage to the Naboo Underwater scenes), and trying to go for better suspense as well as character building and humour.
  • Improved first act and third act pacing.

Only seen TROS once, and it was HAL9000s edit, so this might not be plausible;

but why not end TLJ with Palpatine on his TROS throne - eyes closed, seeing Lukes death, followed by a sinister smile. It would at least end the previous installment on a cliffhanger that full-on reveal Palpatine’s return, and heavily suggest that Palpatine waited for Luke to perish before making his move (much like Voldemort would have Dumbledore killed by his servants before actually taking on the wizarding world).

It would at least not make the hard opening of TROS with the dumb “AND HERE GUYS - OUT OF F NOWHERE - IS SIDIOUS AGAIN! HES BACK”. It’s just so in-your-face and insulting that no matter how much you try to subtly foreshadow his return with Emperor laughters or music in the background it just does not do his return justice. With this approach, at least you tell the audience that he’s back with two iron balls rather than hiding behind an unfinished script and no goal in sight. The ending of TLJ is horrible anyway since it is never done justice, so win-win.

Also, for TROS itself: who the f built Palpatines ships? As i recall it is never explained (stupid comic books to justify bad screen writing does not count) and therefore a fanedit could subtly try to make it make sense. My idea would be to have B1 droids in the background in one scene - suggesting Palpatine created his Trade Federation army to create new ships. Having alien creatures or Stormtroopers do it is just not plausible. Machines and droids tho, are. Perhaps some Geonosians flying around in the background as well?

Just my two cents.

Harry Potter: The Revisited Series - Main Thread

Original Synopsis:

The first two films need a more cohesive tone to follow suit with the rest, as the tone of the first two movies are quite, quite different from the rest of the series. They resemble innocent fun and a bright, bright world with no worries but pure joy, yet the story is very dark. I wanted to balance this out, although it is important to keep the first two entries lighter in tone.

I found it a crucial step to develop a more gritty and realistic atmosphere to the Sorcerer’s Stone and the Chamber of Secrets, as well as to clean and pace both of them up in terms of picture, sound and storytelling.

The rest of the films will undergo massive changes as well, although less radical in terms of the visual effects work, tone and color grading (2023 onward: this didn’t age so well, haha.)

Goblet of Fire and Half-Blood Prince are also in dire need of work (Goblet of Fire Ultimate Edition now done).

Let’s remaster this magic!

DONE:

Sorcerers Stone, Chamber of Secrets and all through to Deathly Hallows will have new versions. This is to have more detail in the footage whilst editing, and therefore be able to manipulate both the color grading and the quality to better match the rest of the series in both color and visual tone. Also, the 4k uses the 35mm as the master instead of the DVD upscale that the Blu-Ray is. Therefore, we get the original colors to play with.

The edit are also undergoing massive changes in terms of visual effects, like The Whomping Willow sequence in Chamber of Secrets (which is completed). Goblet of Fire and Half-Blood Prince also have huge narrative changes.

NOT DONE:

  • HBP
  • DH

SPECIAL THANKS:

Chloe

Lord of the Rings: A Hobbit's Tale [The Hobbit Remade] (Released)
Time

RELEASED. V2.

This superior edit of my edit flows better, and has fixed numerous but important transitions, flow, narrative and runtime.

Noteable changes:

  • Riddles In the Dark has been shortened by 1 minute and 40 seconds. This is simply to improve thep pacing of the film. It drags on a tad too long.
  • The Tree Battle has been removed. The film flows way better with it removed and with my narrative changes.
  • The first introduction to Gandalv has been a little bit shortened. I find the conversation too become a little bit too hard on the nose where comedy goes. I think leaving out some comedy helps sell the introduction of this creepy ass wizard showing up out of nowhere a little better. Being insulted like six times in three minutes feels too much.
  • Improved video quality massively.
  • Fixed one harsh audio transition.

… lots more.

Lord of the Rings: A Hobbit's Tale [The Hobbit Remade] (Released)
Time

This edit will receive an updated version, but both will be available.

  • This new version will cut the small prolonged pause between Bilbo and the farmer in the Shire, that made some people expect more dialogue to come.

  • The second edit will cut the entirety of Azog, The Eagles and the “Tree Root Battle”.

  • The video material is slightly cropped to enhance the feeling of old footage - in other words the feeling of the films being filmed ON FILM, more in the style of LOTR.

This updated version is simply due to the abrupt action peace the Azog scene is and its feel of finality.
