The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

Fleabite said:

Alright, been

lurking here with this long enough, I guess. This is my re-edit of the pod race sequence for what I hoped would be a larger project that laziness has prevented me from getting into at this point. My idea was for the prequels to have been made in a world where George Lucas had made all six films in order and thus Phantom Menace would have been originally released in the mid-1960s. I wanted to give it that sort of a feel by utilizing some of John Williams earlier works into the music track (which has necessitated an all new sound FX track that I have barely started. I have the music and video portions complete, however).

The story itself is self-contained and episodic. Qui-Gon Ginn arrives on Tatoonine alone as a Jedi recruiter after hearing rumors of a young pod racer with extraordinary abilities. (I get the sense that Qui-Gon finds the whole racing concept distasteful by one of his facial expressions).

There is no dialogue and the whole race involves only Anakin and Sebulba and clocks in at under three minutes.

Not sure if anyone will like this but I thought I would put it out there in case anyone may want to pick up the ball and run with the concept. It is my thought that since the prequels are so full of flaws it would be feasible to cut them into pieces and salvage the good parts. The missing story points would simply add to the mystery that the PT is missing. Not everything needed to be shown or explained. It was so much better when I was living during the OT era and my imagination had to fill in the blanks. George was not able to make those details more appealing than my imagination did all those years ago.

Anyway, here is my contribution as it now stands.

I love it!

Please post more :)

What is the music during the race?

If that position change directly followed the first shot then i would be all for changing it, but there is the shot of the switch flipping then the shot of Luke jumping out. He could have easily moved to the new position during these shots

Thats true!

The reflection and the missing lights tho problem remains ;)

is it me or is Vader's blade at an odd angle here should it not be a bit more horizontal?

No. THe blade has the right position (you can check it in the one frame that doesnt have the roto on it.

The illusion that it looks in an odd angle is because vader's lightsaber emitter is angled. since the rotoed blade doesnt start from the angled point it looks odd but not a problem :)

Here you can see what i mean:

Also between the shots there are some continuity errors.

Vader's position changes even its the same camera angle

the lights are off and the reflection of the lights are changed.

I believe moving the first shot of vader to the center is a good choice because he isnt interacts so much with the BG and not having problems with the smoke.

(Blame the maker, imageshack messed with my pictures so sorry for the quality)

Can someone explain the glow thing?

(note on the image. I placed the marker randomly. The red glow appears in both versions.)

It mostly appears when an optical effect takes place. in our case the lightsaber.

Iys funny that the shot gets better without it but its a lot of easier adding it in one frame rather trying to eliminate it from the whole sequence.

Hey! its Angel, where have you been mate?

J

Hey Mr J :) Always arround!

Something that might considered error:

In the lightsaber comparison video when vader says perhaps you are not as strong as the emp thought, ady added the missing blade in the last frame right?

But behind vader it was a red mist/fog that might was some optical effect failure back in the 80s. Ady added the blade but the red mist is missing still causing one frame pops out.

With mist

with not

I noticed also some bold move on swap the colors of the sabers in one frame. Nice work ady! i havent noticed that :D

Yoda Training Video:

Just to point out some issues that might got slipped :)

The new CG falcon just before we cut into the bridge, the last frame of it has no motion blur.

The birds that flying across the screen still looks stop motion, even they are look slight better from the original.

The explosions are still have some black edges around chewie and others during the cockpit shot of MF

Vader's green buttons in the dream sequence are not so green otherwise i can accept that the colors are altered because its a dream.

Luke's saber glow pops up when he ignites the saber.

It would be ideal the imperial monitors had some activity rather be static.

Lightsaber comparison video:

Vader's blue button is missing in his close up when he uses the force against luke. It appears gray and broken.

Some vacuum holes appear gray outside the window during the duel while it should have been red. It might be tho deactivated because i think the overall matte later changed.

ESB:Revisited new clip

One particular shot that should be replaced with the CG MF is when luke sees it after the hoth battle. While the shot is not something tragic the movement of the ship is not match with the camera movement making it look fake and with no agility/perspective to move out from the planet.

When the SDs are colliding the matte issue are still there over the officers(after a while it appears something that seems its moving or changing.

It would be nice while luke enters the atmosphere from the cockpit POV as far as the ship passes the trees the brightness should darkening matching the brightness and the mood of the next shot in the swamps.

Question:

In one image that ady posted we see inside the MF approaching bespin.

We see some orange clouds and over them something blue that looks like a planet.

What is it? From the picture i cant tell.

Thanks:)

If you don`t like it, it`s your right, kinda "our business - to offer, your right - to refuse"... I planning my own Ultimate Edition and all of mine, that you disagree for REVISITED, will be done for mine ULTIMATE... But when I`ll seriously start to work on this only God knows... Or maybe even he too don`t know...

Will you start a thread of yours with your Ultimate version.

It sounds be a bit suspicious but i must be wrong!

Indeed Angel(vaderios), ESB:Revisited's final tweaked AT-AT battle is bound to make up for any missing AT-ST shots, at the end of the day, as far as I'm concerned.

Hope to finally get around to those 'Dagobah' thoughts soon, by the way. :)

Yes! i cant wait for the dagobah analysis for months :D

I'd have really liked to have seen the AT-ST vehicle being more involved in the Hoth battle with that shot , and it's certainly an out-take that would make a neat extra, if it were to be included on the Blu-ray set...although that's probably too much to hope for.  Dammit!

Well after revisited will be your official version yo wouldn't even remember that existed from the official canon;)

Or maybe not?

One thing I've noticed with the holograms in the originals is how contrasted the figures are, and how shadows tend to appear clear in the hologram.

Is this animated? If yes i would love to have it in the edit.

Is the similar i did for OTize the holograms. IT was done with no rotoscoping so if any new tv lines will be added be my guest.

I've been thinking about giving a WTF moment to the PT, and considering some suggestions Bingowings has made of Anakin having a double personality ala Jekyll/Hyde... What if Anakin was, only in a way, a host for something?

A xenomorph? :O Like the marka ragnos in the Jedi academy?

A dark lord's spirit into a burned teenager in a robosuit.

Like Leo from Inception could say: We must go deeper!

it gives a new dimension of Anakin defeating Vader at the end or ROTJ

I like it

If you are going to use sound in the lightsaber fights, how about using the original clashing sounds from the original trilogy

Yes.

I wouldnt suggest that...

Apart the fact that many tried it and all failed hard putting a choreographed sound design/mix that were for specific shots/moves and timing, to a complete different enviroment you have to calculate all the rest elements.

I wouldnt mind tho have some sound design present but heavily muffled so the music or the dialogue from vader takes place.

EDIT: Revenge of the Cut had some pretty solid sound design considering the swings and the hums (minus the saber clash sounds). The cutter prove that a bold sound desinger knows where to put what considering the music and ambient and how all these can tie together without being destracting or anoying..

Spence i suggest to seek the clips and take references or ideas :)

I don't remember either of these.  The Padme one sounds interesting, can you tell me more about it?

It was a game with Qui gon Panaka jar jar and anakin who to win padme's heart.

Qui gon was trying to impress the queen with his knowledge telling her about the midchrorians during the tattoine journey while constantly answering negative to anakin.

In the sandstorm shot qui gon actualy phones panaka and says to him "there is always a bigger fish" and panaka have a beeep moment.

We had moments when qui gon touch padme and wins some points while he kills anakin during the podrace.

When the voting come closer we see that jar jar is the winner and padme kills quigon into one from the secret cameras.
