I know Bingo.....I'm not 100% happy with the way I've used that CG model, gonna re-structure how I did that shot.......the main thing I'm striving to do is not having things being obviously CG....Gonna think....

Angel's suggestions should work.

J

What is your renderer?

Did you try to combine two or 3 renders with different settings together to take a nice result in compositing?

Your deathstar looks a bit flat. You can cheat a bit by adding a slight motion of turning. more patrolling star destroyers like the one you added is a must if you want to tone up/guide the eye to what points you want to show.

This is a nice article you can look and take ideas of the basics but masterful done subconsciously language of a successful done shot.

replace the first SD with CG model

J

Of course that!

Considering you have a so bright planet next to death star and the SD some of the blue illumination/reflection should hit the structures. Either go with a more subtle planet and keep the OT feel of absolute colors or you can put the ambient light on the surfaces of the ships :)

More realistic ways? render in passes and then composite them for maximum control.

Renders that being rendered in the final resolution always give a clear look that have many details. Which is something that we DONT want :)

Cheating of either rendering in higher rez 4-8K and then downsize or either render in slight smaller rez to get the film effects is a wise solution for anything that looks artificial.

Sharp halos, small artifacting noise blury to sharpen results blended highlights eveything that a camera can produce and not a renderer is always welcome :)

At the very least, the Star Destroyer is moving much faster in the last shot, which is jarring and doesn't make sense.

The SDs in ANH are going ridiculous fast for a ship of their size. Even its space and all the science stuff they has to go slower to give the illusion that they are massive.

And there are many shots with them going fast :/

A new establishing shot would need to have something that the audience can instantly be informed that its 'the bad guy's base', I don't think each establishing shot should be bits and pieces, this would confuse the viewer (always keep in mind this could be their first screening of this movie)

J

I love this info-graphic like Mr J :) (why the hell the death star always is lighted from the left?)

3 establishing shots are not many but i dont think that showing close ups of the station will require only 3 shots ;)

The point is how we made a shot that is recognizable but at the same time is cryptic with its content?

I like the idea of putting Tarkin alone there, to emphatize the autocracy that the Empire represents. Could you illuminate the room a little more, using imperial lighting on some walls or something ?

I thought it. THe white areas/light might ruin the composition that you need to focus on the planet and then tarkin.

I still need to add the missing control panels that add a bit of a life.

As for Death Star reveals, the station is compared to a small moon, which would make it smaller than an Earth sized planet (possibly even smaller than a moon sized moon) but I'm all for first reveals that make the station look really big, which is why I suggested we don't get a full reveal until the Falcon is caught in the Tractor Beam.

We could see bits and pieces (towers, windows, hangers etc) but not get the full enchilada until our heroes do.

Im interested about that. Im a bit lost in translation tho. :)

You suggest that the death star have always close ups and filling the screen until we get to the falcon and then have the great reveal?

If yes then some highlights of the surface could lead to the certain shots of the inside.

Still some key plot elements might suggest that we see the size of the station ( when it destroys the planet) still its artistic decision or direction how can you show that.

If you are more into it let me know :)

Just a little test . Probably not going to appear in ESB:R as it takes ages to do one shot:

Hmm Mixing thoughts there.

Even i like the concept there are lot of stuff you (already) have to consider

Most of the smoke/atmos layers it seems that are on screen mode. Makes them look even 1 or two bits extra bright. Plus the compositing errors that even in big budget movies are doing is, when placing an element that is flat but is a representation of 3d the illusion fails because (not always) from the transfer mode.

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=5142888&postcount=4467

Taking reference from this topic you can notice that not all the detail is inside a newly placed element.

I wish i could find the making of Titanic (you propably had seen it) It was a hole documentary how they filmed and they added digitaly the frozen breaths at the ending.

In general lines they placed a black box with a light from above in a cold environment and I think Jon Landau was repeating the lines from script so every breath/atmos have its own personality and be as original as possible.

I like the concept :) I hope it can be right as possible

EDIT: I had an idea that is being used before. Trying to make the atmo layer into a normal map with the use of some plugins (a batch work im afraid) and then you can relight the atmos when it needed

I misunderstood your reasons for posting an old quote of mine, so i'm sorry for that.

Also, which hard edges do you mean?

No worries mate :)

Especially in 720p its noticeable but at this part most. Geometry seems to create a hard edge that collides with the generally blury surface of the SD.

In motion everything seems more clear.

You know, i just knew you would have to come in and post something like that even though this has nothing to do with why the TIEs are now blue.  Actually the TIEs have only a subtle tint of blue in the latest version (the video posted is an earlier video before the final colour of the TIEs was finalised). The true colour of the TIEs now is the light grey/blue to match the original colour of the models. Maybe you should actually have read what i wrote before trying to make out i have now contradicted myself.

Im on your side actually :)

I love and i find creative someone can change his mind. You always gave the impression that you do the CC ignoring the global illumination because the removal of the tint makes the things have their colors individual but not reflect any of their surroundings. But that is just the impression and not the real deal. It good to see that more color is actually is in the edit an i expect that the fighters or any other ships will be realistically colored when they interact with their surroundings.

^

I have notice that before but there are some camera projection artifacts/hard edges on the star destroyer(wrong geometry i can assume) if you can blur the edges a bit it should be unnoticable.

Note: It would be neat to add a small bridge lights to the SD. most for fan service. They have a nice shape

The lifelessness. Ady was tired of looking at black and white space shots!

adywan said :

ah, the biggest problem with what i call the "digital generation". Everything has to be colourful all the time and sometimes to the point of over saturation. A main reason why much of today's effect and films just looks terrible and fake. The OT always had that monochromatic look to it. The colours were never over the top and in your face. The space scenes were always drab with flashes of colour here and there during battles and it worked. Now look at the PT and almost every shot has to be colourful and we all know how much that didn't work. This is one reason i think they added the blue tint to the OT (Ep's 4 & 5 especially) to remove that monochromatic look so it seemed to  be as colourful as the PT. Jedi was a little more colourful than the first 2 so maybe that's why the tint was hardly present in that movie.

I don't know if everyone noticed (I didn't), but Ady made the TIEs blue again, and confirmed on Facebook that not only will all the TIEs be the proper shade of blue in ESBR and RotJR, but he will be coloring the TIEs in ANHRHD! He also mentioned that the Death Star walls won't be so grey, so those of you that didn't care for that will be pleased.

And what is the real reason for this?

All hail the CG TIEs that made and will make these shots look great.

I would be most curious how Adywan intends to solve the riddle with the Executor bridge (I have a copy of the original set blueprint, hopefully this one shows up in Rinzler's blueprints). The studio set was used no less than three times to simulate different sections of the Star Destroyer (plus the one mentioned earlier):

Im interested to see these bluprints if you can show them here :)
