I’ll will be very surprised if this isn’t my favorite Star Wars film of all. Much to discuss as the trailer screen-grab breakdown unfolds.

ANCHOR! What if they someone let it tie into the Radio Drama version of things?!

Fingers crossed. 😉 I’m still hoping Diego Luna is Biggs. It would certainly make sense that he’s at the Yavin temple a few weeks before Luke and Han show up.

What other one do you own? Why not the others?

Anchorhead is what we call a super-purist (no one has ever called him that before). He is a fan of the film “Star Wars” that was released in 1977 and the Radio Drama from 1981. He’s heard they made sequels and even PREquels (whatever those are), but he doesn’t care to watch them. I think we got him into a couple books at one point.

Anchor, what’s your head-canon now?

That’s pretty much it in a nutshell. 😉

Personal canon just as you called it; 1977 film, 1981 NPR version, Daley novels, Zahn novels, and the 2015 film.

Super-purist… strokes Van Dyke beard and ponders the new title

If Willie wasn’t as annoying, Temple would surpass Crusade.

I was never too bothered by her. I always thought she was kind of funny, but then again some of that could be nostalgia goggles.

Those would have to be nostalgia…I don’t know, what’s something that is 1,000 times larger than goggles?

Actual LOL. 😉

Batman T-shirt help needed.
Time

I may have mentioned before that it’s a rare day indeed when I’m not wearing either a Batman or an Astros T-shirt. Astros stuff is easy - the team site. Batman, however, takes a little more work. Whenever I see one I like, usually on Big Bang Theory, I have to hunt down the source. Most are documented on a few TBBT nerd sites so it’s not a huge chore to find the seller.

I was watching an episode recently and saw one that I really dig (screen-grab below). I’ve reached the end of the Internet and can’t find it for sale anywhere. Even DC doesn’t have it and they have over 300 Batman shirts. I was hoping someone here could tell me if they’ve seen it anywhere.

It’s very much in the style of Aparo, Adams, or Novick. Definitely a 1970s vibe at least it looks it in the screen grab. Damn if I can find it though, the shirt or the artist. I thought if I could find the artist it might help me track down the seller.

Sir George Martin, composer, producer and arranger dies at 90

The very first album I ever bought. Still listen to it with some regularity. As I do The Beatles.

I don’t usually chime in on this thread because it’s at times deeply depressing. The losses of icons in my life is as hard for me as it is some of our younger members. A fan is a fan, no matter when you discover the artist\actor\singer\etc. However, for those of us much further into the journey, the loses can also be quite sobering.

I jumped in here because George Martin had a hand in an enormous portion of my life. It’s an understatement for sure to say he’s been a huge influence on the soundtrack of my life.

^I agree with all of your TFA standouts, but I’ve got a few more that I tend not to skip.

“Attack on the Jakku Village” - I’m not overfond of the track as a whole, but the moment when Kylo Ren’s motif first kicks in makes it worthwhile.

“I Can Fly Anything” - I like this one mostly because of the strong visual associations I have with the TIE escape scene.

“The Abduction” - Rey’s theme coming in at the end was one of my favorite musical moments in the film.

“Han & Leia” - The love theme from ESB might be my favorite piece of Star Wars music overall, so I’m a sucker for any time it shows up on the TFA soundtrack.

“March of the Resistance” - I actually like this one because it’s reminiscent of Indy. It’s also got some of the most sophisticated orchestration I’ve ever heard from Williams; the bit in the middle with the staggered strings, horns and flutes gives me a really strong and very welcome Beethoven vibe.

I need to give those a closer listen. I do listen to a few others from time to time and find them interesting. “I Can Fly Anything” is a neat piece.

Ranking the Star Wars Soundtracks

I first started collecting soundtracks over 40 years ago (“Jaws” by J. Williams was actually my first soundtrack album, and I think “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” was my 2nd.) and the original trilogy soundtracks and films were new and fresh at that time of my life. Films and collecting tie-in merchandise had also been a major part of my life back then. As I got older my interests and money drifted to other things, so I stopped collecting soundtracks as a hobby in the late 1990’s. Every now and then I will get one if it’s truly amazing, but I just don’t delve into soundtracks as I once did.

Honest to God, I could cut & paste that paragraph as my own thoughts, experiences, and path. I’m probably a few years older because my first was Live and Let Die, followed by The Man with the Golden Gun, and Jaws after that. The soundtrack to Star Wars was one I wore out. It finally got a rest when Alien was released, which is probably my most listened-to soundtrack. It’s still a near weekly listen for me 37 years later.

There were others scattered between, as well as regularly after that, but like yourself I became more selective as the journey continued. I don’t buy them by default anymore. However, I still buy them with some regularity and they still make up probably 75% of my listening. Most recent are Spectre and In The Heart Of The Sea.

Of the Star Wars scores, these are the only three I own. I’m unfamiliar with the others, having only heard them once or never.

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
The Force Awakens

I still listen to Star Wars somewhat regularly. I also listen to The Force Awakens regularly, but I skip most of it. The Scavenger, Rey’s Theme, Farewell and the Trip, and The Jedi Steps and Finale are pretty much it. I think they’re fantastic, particularly Rey’s Theme. The rest of the score sounds like Indiana Jones incidental music. I haven’t listened to The Empire Strikes Back in several years. It doesn’t move me the way it once did, which was never even close to the way Star Wars moved me. Listening to The Jedi Steps and Finale as I type this.

Regarding John Williams’ other scores; I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again; I think Memoirs Of A Geisha is his finest hour. It’s a regular in my rotation.

What don't you like about TESB?

“No, I am your Father”

With that line, Lucas started down the rabbit hole. That moment was the beginning of my eventual separation from all things post-1980 Lucas-penned.

I last watched Empire 17 years ago. Where I worked at the time, we did a serialized lunchtime theater marathon of the OT in preparation for Phantom. Prior to that, it had been probably 10 years since I’d seen it.

If Disney releases the theatrical versions of the first two films, I’ll buy it and probably watch it. I think the Degobah portion of the film is its bright spot. Hamill carries the film.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

Interesting thoughts on the ending. Speaking as one of Wook’s old geezers 😉 I’ve also been waiting a very long time for this.

The nostalgia was a part of my digging the ending, but not nearly as much as seeing the story restored. I was happy to get a glimpse of my hero 40 years later. A moment to take in the passage of time, followed by a couple of years to ponder his journey.

Real world, I really dug the last scene. I loved its silence and its style. I was glad it didn’t mirror anything familiar. It needed to feel far far away from Lucas. Best part of the film for me. It was the emotional pause I wanted.

Welcome aboard!

A similar scenario happened in the old Marvel comics, where a pirate nemesis of Han Solo came across a Star Destroyer that had been heavily damaged in a battle with the Rebellion, and realized it was repairable. The issue of how many pirates does it take to crew an Imperial ship didn’t really come up though.

Booster Terrick runs the Errant Venture with a skeleton crew of 4,800. They don’t mention how many of that crew may be droids, but it’s alluded to that it’s about as small a crew as he can get by with and still have the ship remain functional. It’s also stripped of most of its armament and left with little more than self defense capability. Hardly battle-ready. Noble’s idea of an additional droid component could help with that.

I don’t know anything about prequel-era ships but just going by the info above, I suppose I’d go with the ship needing the smallest crew.

YouTube/Vimeo/etc... Star Wars video finds
Time

This is more of a cross-over find. We were discussing childhood crushes at work and I mentioned my first and biggest (by far) - Susan Dey. Swoon. She was on The Partridge Family. I never missed an episode and was always particularly interested when the story focused on Laurie. I decided to look for a good clip from the show to send my younger co-workers. My search led to one of the best episodes 😉 The one where Laurie’s braces pick up a radio signal. I found the clip.

Look who happened to be the guy with the radio…

This is the reason I have been saying for years that if we adjust for inflation then the amount of money made off of home video releases should be counted as well, since most older films have the advantage of TV and home video not existing when they were released so they got rereleased many times over and made a ton of extra money that way.

That’s an excellent point. Do we know if theatrical re-releases are counted in the overall earnings of a film through the years? Including its opening release, Gone With The Wind has had thirteen theatrical releases from 1939 to 2014.

Also, those are just the studio releases. There have probably been countless retro-theater runs as well which may have made significant amounts of money. That’s how I first saw it back in the 1970s. There was an old theater from the 1930s that had month-long rotations of classic films. Gone With The Wind was a regular there for years.

I know this movie is going to divide the fanbase again, as the dislikers are pretty passionate, as well as the fanboys. We all have our faults, but the best thing to do is to not criticize the person, or the critiques.

Perhaps one way to help would be to stop using the term fanboys. It has long been overused to the point of having no meaning other than to belittle anyone who has a different opinion. In the case of Star Wars, the fan base is comprised of millions of people of both genders and spanning several generations.

Just because an idea is new that does not make it good and if you have a problem with old ideas being reused then Star Wars isn’t the franchise for me I am sad to say.

I agree. Original doesn’t automatically equal good. Lucas has proven time and again that he couldn’t really move past Empire. You’re also correct in pointing out that Return is just as similar to Star Wars as is The Force Awakens. I’m still at a loss as to why one film gets a pass and the other doesn’t. Particularly when the new one is so much better than Return.

Taking a few story concepts, such as uptight princess rescue element really isn’t much of a Kurosawa rip-off. It is pretty much an element found in ever third fairytale.

Character such as Vader and Tarkin in my opinion relatively very unique. Not to mention all the other relatively unique stuff and concepts such as death star, the force, lightsabres, spaceship designs, stormtroopers designs, creatures, etc. I said “relatively” because one way or another you can find something similar somewhere and start a petty argument.

On the other hand, TFA directly copied stuff.

Lucas also directly copied many other people. Often times more than just similarities. Some mentioned here may have been inspiration, others are direct lifts.
