Did you just call me Solo?
Did you just call me Solo?

…even if whoever they got was absolutely dead on I’d never be fooled. They ought not try to disguise the fact that they have a new actor, because that’s never going to work.
I agree. I’ll go on step further and say I think it might even be a distraction.
I think Mr Erlich has much deeper issues than a Han Solo film. That type of journalism is beyond annoying to me. He’s not discussing his thoughts on the film or the actor. His weird statement that actors are just placeholders for a role because they aren’t important doesn’t fit into a discussion about a movie where the new actor is taking the reigns 40 years after the original actor first played him.
Instead, he’s stating his opinions as though they’re indisputable facts and using the Han Solo casting as a way to demonstrate his deep insight on film making and the people who go to the theater. He doesn’t even offer up the possibility that others may disagree or that he may be mistaken. Not to mention there are more than a few of his matter-of-fact statements that are wrong.
Also, if he’s going to poach from Game Of Thrones to make himself appear profound, at least give the show credit.
In answer to your asking for our thoughts, I think Mr Erlich is a hack and the piece is a rant he tried to disguise as insight. He ends up saying and/or proving nothing. Truthfully, I only read all of it because it’s relevant (barely) to this thread.
You guys are exhausting. How about steering the conversation back to the film and take a breather from claiming how good you are at knowing a film will suck 19 months before it’s released.
[…] It always comes across to me as Lucas thinking he’s really shown how deep he is. It’s ham-fisted.
I don’t think Lucas was trying to sound deep, all of his dialogues in the PT sound “solemn” (or sometimes cheesy) like that one, it’s just part of his style.
Not being familiar with the prequels, I will admit to my thoughts being speculation from the few clips I’ve seen.
I’m surprised at the amount of play this is getting considered it isn’t official. Granted it certainly looks like the worst kept secret of the week.
Either way, I don’t see any reason to doubt the pick. He looks the part of an untrustworthy tough guy smuggler. I assume he has the chops or they wouldn’t have picked him.
I’m happy he’s not a copy of Ford. He needs to be Han Solo, not Harrison Ford. If he’s talented, and the writers are talented, and the director is talented, then I’ll be watching Han Solo. I don’t want to watch someone pretending to be Harrison Ford. Even better if this tangent film ends up as adult and gritty as Rogue One.
I like that they appear to be putting story and talent ahead of fan service. Color me optimistic.
Looks like it got to stay in the UK after all. 😉
“So this is how liberty dies…with thunderous applause” - Padmé
That line was completely unnecessary. Could have been accomplished with a facial expression and it would have been more meaningful
I agree. While I’ve never seen it, it’s been repeated so many times I feel like I have. It always comes across to me as Lucas thinking he’s really shown how deep he is. It’s ham-fisted.
More importantly, when was Kate Bush on the crew of The Enterprise?

If you want a further example of 70’s zaniness, check out the Paul Lynde Halloween Special. It’s on Youtube, features Margaret Hamilton reprising a certain Witch from Oz, and also was the tv debut of a some clean cut musicians who call themselves KISS.

Pinky Tuscadero!!!

Goofy is also Jar Jar.
Please tell me that’s a real toy I can purchase. That is an awesome fix for that insulting, Lucas-hates-the-fans character.

I can’t imagine how anyone could have read that script and said “Okay, I have no problem with the idea of having my name associated with this product”.
I guess when the prime time line-up was Love Boat, ChiPs, Starsky & Hutch, Three’s Company, Donnie & Marie, and Vega$ - how much worse could it have been?
Wait, don’t answer that. 😉

There might be plenty of bad Star Wars stuff, but that special is the only one where its very existence baffles me.
No doubt it’s baffling when seen 38 years later, but at the time it wasn’t. Star Wars wasn’t the grand visually Rhyming entity created by the genius Ring master Lucas * genuflect *. It was just a single story in a single film. There was no Original Vision™, so this was the third story written to expand the Star Wars universe. I’ll research, but Star Wars may have still been playing in the theaters at the time. It was that big of a deal.
Like millions of fans back then, I’d seen Star Wars countless times and had worn out the soundtrack. A year later we were all anxiously awaiting another look at the Star Wars universe. All we’d had until then was Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, which I’d started to read but which didn’t stick with me until decades later. It’s now Personal Canon.
I was one of the millions who tuned in that evening in 1978 and I was one of the millions who felt let down. It was a weird mess. I haven’t seen it since. Come to think of it, it may have been baffling 38 minutes later. Maybe I’m ready for a second viewing after all these years. I can take it. Probably.
This is one of the times during the Bale films where it felt like a parody to me. When I was in the theater, my first thought was it looked like two cosplayers meeting outside a venue before they stand in line to get Conroy’s autograph…
"We’re over at the Marriott. Rooms are pretty nice, plus they have an airport shuttle"
"I’m at the Hilton across the street. Cable selection is crappy, but free continental breakfast"

Batman (1966)
Batman (1989)
Those are really the only two I watch anymore.
Adam West was my introduction to the character and he played it right out of the comic books. I watch an episode of the 1960s show almost weekly. He fit the character as-written at the time. I’m also a big fan of Keaton in the role. He kept the character grounded, brought in a touch of realism, yet he still kept one foot in the comic book world. I think that is an absolute must for the character to work. A great addition to the franchise and the mythos.
Batman only though. Batman Returns was terrible, but not because of Keaton. Tim Burton ruined it. It seems to be the film where he found his one-note signature style; Everyone has dark circles around their eyes, pale skin, and wild hair. I saw the film once in the theater, lost interest about halfway through and never watched it again. I remember nothing other than the fact that I thought it was bad.
If I had to rank the others;
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight
I thought Bale was a good choice as a modern - what if he were real - portrayal. However, having Batman that grounded in reality took away from his mystique. There were a few scenes in the second and third films where I felt it bordered on parody. Plus that ridiculous voice.
The first of his three is by far the best. The second one gets taken over by Ledger constantly chewing the scenery. I find his portrayal of The Joker to be exhausting. The third one has some great moments, but drags on for way too long and the story is unnecessarily complex. Bale’s performance just hasn’t aged well for me.
The rest are forgettable. Clooney at the bottom, just above Kilmer. Two terrible portrayals in the two worst films in the character’s history. I saw each film only once and have forgotten nearly every moment of both of them. I agree with Sheldon Cooper on Big Bang Theory when he listed his arch enemies; “Joel Schumacher, who nearly ruined the Batman franchise.”
I haven’t seen Batman v Superman yet, but just from the clips it looks like Affleck is better than Bale. He seems more believable. I suspect he’ll go to my #3. I’ll update after I go see it. I’m looking forward to a Batman-only Affleck film.
Worth pointing out; I have all the episodes of Beware The Batman and watch them with some regularity. I thought it was very well done. Nice to see Batman back to his detective roots.

I guess us poor goyims should just except that Frink is a choosen star wars fans and all he says is fact.
I suspect you can come up with a less antagonistic signature.
I can’t really imagine an Obi-Wan film set after ROTS without them making up any ridiculous stuff. Sonce he should have been living on Tatooine foe the entire time, I don’t think many would be interested in slice-of-life on Tatooine type of film.
They could just have the plot be about Obi-Wan protecting a settlement from criminals and/or Tusken Raiders or something.
I’d dig a more singular story & location like that. If they kept it serious and gritty the way Rogue One appears, it could continue in this vein of deeper anthologies.
Rogue One feels more like a film for adults, at least from what we’ve seen. If they kept a Kenobi film in that same universe, I’d be all for it. They could stay really tangential to Star Wars and have him only as Ben in the film. No mention of the world or story from which we know him so well.
Seventeen years since we first met him as Kenobi, he’s getting the weathered look that would fit that Anthology world. He’s looking like someone who could have been in exile on a desert planet for many years. He’d be perfect for it.

You could say that SW and ROTJ are pretty much popcorn films too. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. Star Wars are fun space movies with a bit of depth to them and that’s all you need to make a good one.
Yeah, but those were good popcorn films, not tr…
FRIIIIIIIIINNKK!!!
With some of the “experts” here, I think I prefer normal people.
I have to say, being a long-time nerd there are times when I agree. People like this can sometimes be refreshing. 😉
You might as well close this thread. It’s pointless anyway
It’s crossed my mind.
TESB is not better then ROTS.
This place has really gone downhill lately.
Whatever asshole.
Consider yourself warned.

Dude, it wasn’t adressed to you. …Some people get very aggressive when their beloved franchise does not convince everyone else…bouh hou hou this man is dead inside he doesn’t like TFA and RO, BURN THE WITCH !
Dude, you’re not helping matters. Give it a rest.
I’ll will be very surprised if this isn’t my favorite Star Wars film of all. Much to discuss as the trailer screen-grab breakdown unfolds.
ANCHOR! What if they someone let it tie into the Radio Drama version of things?!
Fingers crossed. 😉 I’m still hoping Diego Luna is Biggs. It would certainly make sense that he’s at the Yavin temple a few weeks before Luke and Han show up.
