Considering the energy released on impact is proportionate to the mass times the velocity squared…consider that an object of 1kg traveling at the speed of light would have a the same energy released on impact as a nuclear bomb.

You’re more right than you may know.

The equation for kinetic energy is 1/2 the mass x velocity squared. Ek = ½mv2

A 1kg object hitting something at the speed of light;
1 Kg - 186,282 m\s = 17,350,491,762 joules.

That’s about the equivalent of 4 megatons. That puts it just shy of Castle Union but orders of magnitude more than Fat Man.

I agree with your posit that it would take very little to destroy something kinetically in the GFFA. Using a ship to do it would be a waste of a ship, nor would it need to be going anywhere near light speed. It’s been used and tested in the real world for decades. Our own SDI - aptly nicknamed Star Wars - had a kinetic energy weapons division. We also used kinetic weapons in Vietnam (Lazy Dog).

All that said; I don’t rail on it or care with regard to the GFFA because it’s a series of movies where I’m more than happy to suspend belief. I’m there to escape and watch my heroes battle the bad guys. If I want realistic space physics, I’ll watch 2001: A Space Odyssey (which I do, often).

Ehrenreich seems to have Han’s mannerisms down. It’s all going to boil down to whether us old fogeys accept him as Han Solo or not. I had no problems accepting the cast of Star Trek 2009, because in the end I saw Kirk Spock and McCoy on the screen even if they were being portrayed by different actors.
In the end Ehrenreich has to be Han, not Harrison. If he can make Han his own, it’s going to be a fun ride.

Yes!! That’s it exactly. Well put Wook. He has to be Han, not Ford. Good point on Trek. As I’ve said many times before, if you can recast Kirk, Spock, and McCoy (and they did a fantastic job), you can recast anyone.

I’m digging the idea of seeing the Falcon as a new ship. While we knew decades ago that he won the ship from Lando, for no reason in particular I always assumed it was Lando’s first. Interesting to think it would have been before either of them owned it outright. This admittedly early look opens up the possibility that they gambled for the chance to win or perhaps even steal it when it was new.

Looks like a nice balance of serious\lighter. The humor is mild and on-par with what we’ve seen in the past films with regard to Han. No issue here.

Glover seems like a perfect Lando. Really nice to see Ms Clarke in something other than GoT, where she’s fairly monotone character-wise. Looks like she may be, as our hero was in 1977, not necessarily trustworthy. I don’t think I’ll have a problem with Ehrenreich. A small sample size for sure, but he seems like Han. The sarcasm, the “that’s yes”, and his trademark over-confidence feel correct.

Seems we MAY be getting a short trailer for Solo during the Superbowl, with a longer trailer during ‘Good Morning America’ on Monday.

I’m looking forward to seeing it. I haven’t seen or heard a single thing from the lead, so I’m curious as to what we’re in for. Han is one of the most loved characters in any franchise, going on 40+ years. Not something to be taken lightly.

Do you guys think that this movie is going the “fun” route, or more of a serious story like dark knight?

Hopefully not like Dark Knight Rises, where the director began to believe his own hype.

Began‽ That happened a film earlier. But I digress.

On topic; I’m not really a fan of half fun/half serious. That’s probably my biggest disappointment with TLJ. I don’t think it will be as dark or serious as Rogue One (which it can’t because at least three characters survive the film), but I hope it’s more along the lines of TFA. Humorous moments in an otherwise serious story. Han is an untrustworthy criminal when we first meet him in Star Wars77. I’d hope the back story fits the character as introduced.

What can you do with a Potatot? (was: What can you do with a Potato?)
Time

I grow my own. (Sweet potatoes) I had some free space at the end of the garden where my cantaloupe didn’t do well so I put in two sweet potatoes. I first put them in a glass with toothpicks, the way you do in elementary school. After three weeks they had a fair amount of roots and new growth.

I put them in the garden about 8 feet apart. That was in August. By November, I had a total of about 28 between the two. All the potatoes grow very close to the original, about a foot below the ground.

They’ve been quite tasty. They made an appearance at Christmas dinner. They weren’t ready for Thanksgiving. That we’re out of the ground already, but need a few weeks to cure. That makes them much sweeter. Right out of the ground they’re a little bitter.

I love that. I refuse to watch any movies untill this edit s completed.

It may take a few months, as I have to wait for the Blu-Ray, figure out how to rip it from the disc, screw up, screw up again, give up, use the DVD, screw up again, give up, steal a videotape from a plane, draw on the tape with a green marker, get your address, and mail it to you. Thank you for your patience! ❤️

I can rip it and send you the file

You mean after they’ve purchased the official home release?

Yeah, I thought that’s what you meant.

I’m really on the fence with all of this myself…I love the idea of a disillusioned Luke going into exile and struggling with the murky edges of Jedi ethics and the Force. But at the same time I’m not sure I can see Luke ever actually quitting entirely.

I’ll see your not disagreeing with you, and raise you an also not disagreeing with you. I’d like to think he wouldn’t either, but I’m fine with that direction if he did. Sometimes people become dissolutioned to the point of quitting. Plenty of actors, writers, artists, etc. It can happen, whether we want it or not.

I also think you’re right about some people just not wanting anything other than a continuation of ROTJ Luke and that’s caused yet another fissure in the fan base.

I’m also not certain we really want our heroes to be like normal people anyway.

That could be a 100-page discussion on its own. 😉

Quality article that - enjoyed reading it - nice one.

Agree. Really insightful take on the journey - Luke’s in-universe as well as actual. I’ve tried to make that same point many times here as well as an Indiana Jones board I lurked on many years ago. It’s very hard to explain to twenty-year-olds how different things will be 40 years from now.

When you have no framework for what four decades even feels like, you can’t possibly grasp how the journey changes you. So many things that seem of major importance to you at 20 will be long forgotten when you’re 60.

Forty years on from that summer long ago, I’m not even similar to who I was at 15. I would have been disappointed if all we got was ROTJ Luke with a beard. I may have done a scene or two a little differently, but I have no problem with Luke having changed since he was a farm boy.

It’s interesting that one of the things most polarizing about the film is also one of the things they handled so well. It says more about the audience than it does about the movie.

Honestly, this is what I get for thinking the film has generated some interesting and lengthy discussions on the core mythology and what we all expect. Instead, I log in and the last two pages are more RLM-generated crap, a juvenile GIF, the poster having to be called out by two moderators while having content removed, and then continuing to add to the din with criticisms directed at anyone who doesn’t get it.

The Toys That Made Us. A documentary series.
Time

https://www.netflix.com/title/80161497

Just watched the Star Wars episode. Fascinating look at how Kenner undertook the creation and manufacture of the original Star Wars toys. I was shocked at how organic it all was. They were just a bunch of toy company employees working in an office building. I really thought it would be more scientific and organized. Different world back in 1977.

Some very interesting pieces through the OT years. I was surprised at what the most valuable/rare/coveted is (no spoilers). The wooden build for the Millenium Falcon vacuform mold is really cool. Interesting stories on how it all came together. I’d picked up bits and pieces through the years, mainly from you guys, but this is the actual artists and builders telling the history. Worth a look if you have Netflix.

If there is a way to watch from other countries, I’ll come back and update.

Luke’s act of defiance at the end of the film, while more symbolic, mirrors his heroic act at the end of ANH. The destruction of the first Death Star lit the fire that would destroy the Empire. Another Empire has to be beaten by a struggling rebellion, and another fallen Jedi apprentice has be be conquered by a new hope. We’re narratively right back to square one, which seems completely at odds with the idea, that TLJ puts the franchise in a new direction.

Ok, here’s where I have to step in again. I find that entire paragraph - hard to argue with.

BOOM

See what I did there? Like TLJ, I went in a different direction than you may have anticipated.
My post rhymed with Dre’s. It’s Rian Theory®

I don’t have as much of a problem with the reset as some. However, I will say I’m a bit disappointed that it was all billed as some sort of radical new direction for the franchise and really ended up just being a reset. For the record, I didn’t much care either way what the film would be with regard to the franchise. I have my two films, so anything else is just gravy. If it all helps the franchise become more respected and fun, even better.

Now JJ is free to do whatever he wants - and that’s not a bad thing. Maybe he’ll come up with what a great many of us had hoped TFA would have been. He has a clean slate and a few characters fans like and are following.

Personally, I hope he gives Rose a much more substantial role and deepens the character, and of course, you can never have too much Chewie. Beyond that, I’m fine waiting to see what they do. The way TLJ blew up everything and cleared the board, they could start a new trilogy now. The past two films could serve as a prequel duology for Rey, Finn, Poe, and Rose. We know why they’re here, now lets go on an adventure with them.

Let the one among you who does not possess any PT or SE official home video release be the first to cast a stone.

I’m up! Wait a minute… at what am I supposed to cast a stone?

Is the question which type of digital camera Lucas used or is it more how he used it? As a person sitting in a theater, I will admit to not always knowing when a film is entirely digital v film to digital. Regarding the second two prequels or any SEs, I’ve never seen them. My limited knowledge of them visually comes from a few YouTube clips. Certainly no way to know what they looked like as a theater presentation.

…I’m not sure how much sense that makes either: let’s fly out on barely functional crafts with limited maneuverability to a bunch of AT-ATs and a big gun and hope it doesn’t fire until we are really close so we can shoot at it.

To quote Antiope in Wonder Woman “You expect the battle to be fair! A battle will never be fair!”

The rebels were using the ships they had left. It was either that or sit in the entrance to the cave, put a marshmallow on a stick, and yell incoming!

If they could have gone out on a Star Destroyer and blown a FO-sized hole in the ground, I suspect they would have.

I saw her crashing his attempt at suicide\sacrifice as more along the lines of her version Patton’s remarks before leaving for Africa in WWII ; “No dumb bastard ever won a war by going out and dying for his country. He won it by making some other dumb bastard die for his country.”
She’s just not as blunt about it.

She clearly has feelings for him but she also explains her reasoning with something along the lines of that’s how we’re going to win.
