Rose, of all characters, repeated a sentiment from Kersh ‽
Love it. It’s a nice connection back to the old days.

That’s incorrect.
https://youtu.be/sx15aXjcDZgI really don’t see how being influenced by a dozen old movies is in any way comparable to blantantly recycling story elements, structure, and visuals from the same movie series.
It’s not, nor was I addressing that issue. I was responding specifically to Collipso saying “Neither Star Wars nor Empire ripped off any movie whatsoever”. In fact, it ripped off several films. For the record; I’m not bothered by that. Not now, not in 1977.
Regarding your claim that TFA recycled elements from the OT; I can’t imagine there is anyone on here who doesn’t see that to be the case. There are all sorts of parallels between the OT and the ST. The differences seem to be more about the level at which people are bothered by them.

ANH has one of the heroes in critical condition (R2), one of the long time heroes killed (Obi-Wan), the main villain (Empire) is still at large (just check ESB for evidence) and coming after the good guys (again, ESB shows this), and one of the heroes does go to seek help that will benefit the good fight but instead of it being shoehorned in at the end of the first film it comes in the second.
R2 was fine and in fact looked like new. Ben was someone we’d only known an hour, not 40 years/three films, and The Empire had been defeated. As far as “ESB shows this” and “check ESB for evidence” ; In 1977 there was no second story, no second film planned, and no untold story in the only film. What was years-later written and filmed was not part of the 1977 film, nor was it on the screen at the end of the only film.
Your comment was that Star Wars and TFA ended the same. They did not. Using a film that was written, shot, and released years later doesn’t apply to your statement because none of that existed in Star Wars. Empire is not on the screen at the end of Star Wars, nor is it implied in 1977.

Omg, oojason, those three landscape OT posters are magnificent! I especially like the trench run. Like… I want to buy those and frame them!
I really miss lobby cards. I collected them when I was a kid.

TFA left you with a point at which everything was left off at in just the same manner that ANH did…
?
Star Wars ended with a closure to everything. Bad guys defeated, weapon destroyed, good people safe, the pirate turns trustworthy, and the princess gives the good guys their medals of honor. All is right with the universe.
TFA has one of the heroes in critical condition, one of the long time heroes killed, the main villain still at large and coming after the good guys, and one of the heroes solemnly going off to find another hero who’s gone into exile, in hopes of getting his help in the war.
I don’t see those as even remotely similar in tone of story.
The new Doctor Who logo was unveiled today. Absolutely LOVE it. Everything about the new Doctor just keeps getting better. https://youtu.be/gMGiqAYL1Mw

I now cherish my favorite films the same way I cherish my favorite wines – by the case.
I have viewing rules for some and versions when applicable. (listed next to the film). I have never broken these rules.
2001: A Space Odyssey.
Alien.
Apocalypse Now. (only during the summer)
Back To The Future.
Blade Runner. (only on cold, rainy nights)
Casino Royale. (2006)
Jaws. (only during the summer and always on July 4th)
Planet Of The Apes. (1968)
Rogue One.
The Conversation. (only in December)
Smokey And The Bandit
Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory.
Wonder Woman.
Because it often comes up in film conversations, a word about sequels; While I don’t have a problem with them per se, there are five films for which I will never consider watching their sequels. These films are perfect & finished. Their sequels are answering questions I never asked. They aren’t a possibility, nor are they even a slight urge. I never even give them a thought because I have absolutely no interest what so ever.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Alien
Back To The Future
Blade Runner
Jaws
Smokey And The Bandit
I dig this one and some of the others, too. Might get the lead-in books. I’ve never done that before.
I agree. Awesome artwork and a nice touch having the unaltered Falcon on the Lando cover.

I’m really sursprised by all the backlash TLJ is getting. What were you guys expecting? That all your fan speculations would come true? It doesn’t work that way, people
Back in December 2015 when I saw TFA with my father we both came out disappointed because the movie was essentially the first SW movie …I find it incredibly baffling that the movie has gotten so much praise and talk about how engaging the story and characters were. Huh?

See what I did there?

The Last Jedi will stick with me far more than TFA (which I liked) since it just did the core characters so well in my opinion. The interplay of Luke, Kylo, and Rey was the heart of the movie …
I’ve still only seen it one time. However, after the past few months of pondering it as well as all these in-depth discussions, I think that’s the case for me as well. The only exception being Kylo. I just don’t find him interesting. Not a knock on Driver, you work with what you’re given.
I’ll buy a digital copy when it’s released and watch it again. I suspect I’ll like it more on the second viewing. For the next film, I hope they give us about a ten year gap (in-universe). Let the characters and the story breathe.
Frink is correct. I said unexpected because I’m not a big fan of the film. There are a few parts that I think are really well done though and I give them a look occasionally.
Another is when Luke is hanging under Cloud City. To me, that’s one of the most beautiful scenes in the franchise, visually as well as story.
The Falcon made up to look like a different ship was a plot device in one of the Daley novels, IIRC. Han jettisoned the fake hull sections at some point in the story.
Stars’ End. He does that with the help of Jessa so they can get past authorities where they’ll be smuggling two friends of hers. That’s also where he picks up Bollux and Blue Max. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a few nods to those characters or novels.
Just a notice that the spoiler policy on TLJ will be lifted on Feb. 15th at 12:00 AM Pacific time. If you haven’t seen the movie by then…
Why did you put that in a spoilers thread? Everyone here has seen it otherwise they wouldn’t be here. 😉
To let people know they can discuss the film outside of this topic if they happen to see a discussion where TLJ may
be relevant.
I wonder if, like in Last Crusade, we’ll see Han get the cut\scar on his chin.
I’m going to make a statement you guys may not expect;
This is my favorite part of Empire. https://youtu.be/KvJDItC6tE0
One of Han’s best lines; “Shut him up or shut him down”
Road
I think we still have a rider or two on the board, so this will certainly be familiar. For non-riders, it may still be pretty interesting. It’s a documentary about road racing. Far & away the most famous is Isle Of Man, but there are a couple of others. Road racing in the motorcycle world is similar to the same type of racing in automobiles.
It’s arguably more dangerous however. As a lifelong rider having spent many hours on proper tracks - motorcycle road racing seems like insanity to me. I can’t for the life of me figure out the attraction. It’s super interesting to watch, but seems like suicide to participate.
When I ride public roads, I’m always a bit more tense because it isn’t a groomed & closed facility. These riders go out specifically looking to race in those less-than-perfect environments. They come shockingly close to things I go to great length to avoid; fences, walls, trees, buildings, etc. Crazy to see some of the speed wobbles they get compared to a manicured track.
This documentary is about a family of racers very well known in the motorcycle world. It covers two generations and all their successes and tragedies. Here are a few videos (unrelated to the film) showing some road racing.
Weird, I was just listen8ng to this Friday. Still love it.
Haven’t heard any of the others.
Man, I am digging these teaser one-sheets for the film. For me, some of the best in years. Reminds me of the long ago Star Wars style D one-sheet. Really nice to see something other than the Photoshop heads of the past twenty years or so. The official release may end up being that style, but these will be my high-res DVD case of choice.

I don’t get how people manage to interpret the “we’re fine” line as fan-service.
They’ve already made up their mind about the film. Waiting for the remaining 119 minutes isn’t necessary.
Going at each other isn’t going to change anything.
Great read, man. Thanks.
I’ve been a huge fan of Howard’s work since I first sat in the theater watching Night Shift (still a favorite of mine). I think the character and story are in great hands.
I’ve watched the trailer about ten times. I have to say, I’m becoming very excited about seeing this. The recasting doesn’t bother me and the story, the locations, and most of the characters are new to us. Ron Howard is someone who’s work I really enjoy. If he corrected the direction they were going under the fired directors, this could be a lot of fun. Plus, I’m always up for more Chewie. 😃
Premature since we only have a trailer, but looking at the four films they’ve made, it would appear Disney is better at back stories than they are at continuing stories.
