I will say - their non-action where preserving Star Wars is concerned has certainly changed my view of them as a credible organization.

What the hell could they do? Lucas wouldn't allow them to even if they wanted to anyway.

They could have chosen not to deal with him at all. They could have shown one of a myriad of other films that had a cultural impact; The Godfather, 2001 A Space Odyssey, To Kill A Mockingbird, The French Connection, The Graduate, Jaws, Apocalypse Now - just to name a few. They could have taken a stance.

This is why I am so disturbed that film institutes such as AFI haven't been screaming bloody murder about the lack of preservation of such a groundbreaking film.

This is the letter I sent yesterday;
-----------------------------

Your website shows you are screening “Star Wars, Episode IV, A New Hope (1977)” on October 3rd. I’m curious as to which version of the film you’re actually presenting;

1977 – Star Wars - original theatrical release. 121 minutes

1981 – Star Wars Episode IV, A New Hope – a re-release with new opening titles. 121 minutes

1997 - Star Wars Episode IV, A New Hope – a release with added scenes and characters. 125 minutes

2004 - Star Wars Episode IV, A New Hope – a DVD release with more added scenes and characters. 125 minutes

For $25.00, I’m hoping it’s the original 1977 theatrical release.

Thank you,
----------------------------

I guess the change on their website explains why I didn't get a response. At least we know they aren't ignoring the incoming emails.

Oh well.

Never.... Ever.... Compare Novel to Film.

And in your case it seems, don't even bother reading them - but make absolute statements about them anyway, in a bloated, ego-stroking post.

It's like saying you like The Great Gate of Kiev painting more than the Modest Mussorgsky suite.

Are you referencing the original or Ravel's interpretation of Mussorgsky's interpretation of Hartmann's idea for The Heroes' Gate?

Actually, Casino Royale is amazingly similiar to the novel on which it is based. I would almost go as far to say that it is one of the closest book to film adaptions I have seen in a long time.

C3PX is correct. Casino Royale is by far the closest 007 book-to-film adaptation. Most of the others are almost unrecognizable compared to the novels they take their names from.

For the record - I've been a 007 nerd since I was a kid. Saw my first Bond film in the theaters in 1973 - Live and Let Die. I was hooked instantly. I've seen them all more times than I can count, own the complete DVD set, have most of the soundtracks, post on a 007 forum, etc, etc.

For me, Casino Royale is far and away the best Bond film there has ever been. It's the Bond film I had always wanted to see. It's realistic, serious, and a believable story. It's a back-to-basics spy film, not gadget-laden silliness, with bad acting, caricature bad guys, and over-the-top comic relief - "he always did have an over inflated opinion of himself" - "I believe he's attempting re-entry, sir" - "now pay attention 007". No villains pressing the hidden foot pedal to open the trap door under "number 11" so that she falls into the Piranha tank. No villains operating from a secret base hidden inside a volcano.

They have the playing time listed at 121 minutes. Maybe they really are showing the 1977 version after all.

Yeah, we all wish.

Just pointing it out, kid. I'd like to think the AFI would at least know how long a film is when it's a one-of screening.

Very little remains fron ANH prop-wise as most of the pieces were destroyed after filming.Just thrown in bins out the back of Elstree.

That's awful. I'm surprised GL didn't make sure everything was kept.

That is surprising. Especially since Lucas had known since 1972 that he was going to make 12, err...9, uuh...3 films, uh, uh, 6, uh.

all it takes is going back to the original to see how simplistic the story is, boy rescues girl, saves the galaxy, and everyone has a good time enjoying a great story.

So true C3PX.

When the weather is just right, and I have the day to myself with no interruptions - I pour myself a drink, get a snack, settle in on the couch and I do just what you mention - have a good time enjoying a great story.

No, it's the first chapter in the NPR Star Wars Radio Drama. The chapter with all the characters and scenes that were filmed then dropped from the theatrical release (Camie, Fixer, Biggs, Treadwell, Luke seeing the opening space battle while he's out tending to the vaporators, etc).

I'm not wishing death on anyone - far from it.

I was making a joke about how that's when we will all be allowed to see the OOT in it's proper form. In Soylent Green, just before they die, the people are shown movies of how the world was before mankind ruined it - so they can die peacefully.

Now I know this sounds redundant, but trust me, only the diehards like us know the difference between the OOT & SE, and there are a hell of alot of casual fans who love the movies, but haven't seen them 1,000 times like us, who have been duped by Lucas and the revisionism of the last 10 years. I can't tell you how many older fans of SW that I tell that Jabba was not in the first SW movie, and they have to actually think about it. What happened is they have seen the SE on Cable or HBO in the past 10 years, and just haven't realized that stuff has been changed.

We should be trying to get entertainment magazines, internet sites, etc. to spread the word that the OOT, or the Original Versions of SW still need to get a great release on DVD or HD-DVD, it sounds very minor, but you guys would be suprised at how much the casual SW fan really doesn't know about the SE vs OOT movies.

Lucas wearing "Han shot first" shirt during Indy IV production
Time
I think it's just Lucas' very poor attempt at humor with Ford. Ford's never made any secret of the fact that he's not happy about the changes or the prequels. Lucas just seems like the kind of guy who's been living in his insulated Lucasworld for so long that he doesn't understand that the whole issue of castrating the character of Han Solo wasn't funny to people. In fact, it's cost him even some of his most loyal fans.

With that one change, Lucas finally went too far. However, he still doesn't realize it. Instead of admitting his mistake, he chose instead to lie about it (saying it was his original idea in 1977) and then went so far as to make up cartoon t-shirts about it. Then he somehow thinks it would actually be funny to wear one around the actor whose character he ruined. He's that out of touch.

So it would appear the Academy is definitely affiliated with the Empire, however joining and graduating from it wouldn't necessarily mean you had to join the Empire and became a TIE pilot. The career choices, as you can see above, were numerous.

That's it exactly. Also, if you remember, the people Luke hangs out with (Camie, Fixer, Windy, Deke) make fun of him and Biggs for joining (or wanting to, in Luke's case) as well as expressing some concern over being made to join combat forces once they've enrolled in the academy.

In fact, that's a big portion of the first chapter of the radio version. It’s also one of my favorite parts because you really get to see the interaction between Luke and the others. They aren’t particularly nice to him and he’s more of an outsider. You get the feeling he hangs out with them because Tatooine is so sparsely populated – not because they are all close friends. They aren’t really.

It's no different than our own military. The recruiting commercials always put a spin on it to make it seem like you're training for a career in electronics, communications, or flight mechanics - downplaying the fact that you're going into combat. Plenty of people don't join our military because they have the same concerns Fixer has - they doubt the promises of a better career in civilian life.
