No, it's the first chapter in the NPR Star Wars Radio Drama. The chapter with all the characters and scenes that were filmed then dropped from the theatrical release (Camie, Fixer, Biggs, Treadwell, Luke seeing the opening space battle while he's out tending to the vaporators, etc).

I'm not wishing death on anyone - far from it.

I was making a joke about how that's when we will all be allowed to see the OOT in it's proper form. In Soylent Green, just before they die, the people are shown movies of how the world was before mankind ruined it - so they can die peacefully.

Now I know this sounds redundant, but trust me, only the diehards like us know the difference between the OOT & SE, and there are a hell of alot of casual fans who love the movies, but haven't seen them 1,000 times like us, who have been duped by Lucas and the revisionism of the last 10 years. I can't tell you how many older fans of SW that I tell that Jabba was not in the first SW movie, and they have to actually think about it. What happened is they have seen the SE on Cable or HBO in the past 10 years, and just haven't realized that stuff has been changed.

We should be trying to get entertainment magazines, internet sites, etc. to spread the word that the OOT, or the Original Versions of SW still need to get a great release on DVD or HD-DVD, it sounds very minor, but you guys would be suprised at how much the casual SW fan really doesn't know about the SE vs OOT movies.

Lucas wearing "Han shot first" shirt during Indy IV production
Time
I think it's just Lucas' very poor attempt at humor with Ford. Ford's never made any secret of the fact that he's not happy about the changes or the prequels. Lucas just seems like the kind of guy who's been living in his insulated Lucasworld for so long that he doesn't understand that the whole issue of castrating the character of Han Solo wasn't funny to people. In fact, it's cost him even some of his most loyal fans.

With that one change, Lucas finally went too far. However, he still doesn't realize it. Instead of admitting his mistake, he chose instead to lie about it (saying it was his original idea in 1977) and then went so far as to make up cartoon t-shirts about it. Then he somehow thinks it would actually be funny to wear one around the actor whose character he ruined. He's that out of touch.

the academy luke wants to go to

So it would appear the Academy is definitely affiliated with the Empire, however joining and graduating from it wouldn't necessarily mean you had to join the Empire and became a TIE pilot. The career choices, as you can see above, were numerous.

That's it exactly. Also, if you remember, the people Luke hangs out with (Camie, Fixer, Windy, Deke) make fun of him and Biggs for joining (or wanting to, in Luke's case) as well as expressing some concern over being made to join combat forces once they've enrolled in the academy.

In fact, that's a big portion of the first chapter of the radio version. It’s also one of my favorite parts because you really get to see the interaction between Luke and the others. They aren’t particularly nice to him and he’s more of an outsider. You get the feeling he hangs out with them because Tatooine is so sparsely populated – not because they are all close friends. They aren’t really.

It's no different than our own military. The recruiting commercials always put a spin on it to make it seem like you're training for a career in electronics, communications, or flight mechanics - downplaying the fact that you're going into combat. Plenty of people don't join our military because they have the same concerns Fixer has - they doubt the promises of a better career in civilian life.

I'm sure there are some parts of it that are really nice - color, clarity, etc. I was just lucky I found out ahead of time that there were added scenes and characters. I didn't want to worry with having to try to unsee them afterwards. So I never bothered with them.

Man, nearly 30 years later, I still have a scattering of images in my head from the original TV airing of The Holiday Special. The SE additions are the last thing I need in there with them.

Share your Star Wars theater experience
Time
The theater I saw Star Wars in, every week of the summer of 1977, was torn down about four years ago. It was the first theater in the city to have more than one screen (it had two). The screens were gigantic by today's standards. They were set into the wall about eight feet deep, so they had a presence about them. I saw a ton of movies there. They were run by General Cinema Corporation. While looking for a picture of the theater, I stumbled across a site with a link to another site that had the GCC intro. I must have seen that intro a hundred times as a kid. This was long before the pre-movie sensory overload you're subjected to these days. Back then, the film was the experience.

Here's the GCC intro that played before every film; Theater intro

Here's a picture of the theater (not taken by me);

It had been shut down for a while before it was demolished, so I knew it was just a matter of time. One day there was a chain link fence around the property. About a week later I drove by one afternoon and the back wall\screen area was in a giant pile of rubble, the roof was gone, and one of the side walls was about half gone. You could see the inside slope of where the seats used to be and the entrance from the lobby into the theater. An entrance I'd passed through for more movies than I can remember, and more showings of Star Wars than I can count.

It was a weird thing to see it being demolished. Now it's a strip center with a Circuit City about where the theater used to be. That road next to it isn't even there anymore. They leveled and redeveloped the entire area.

... to say that there is not stuff in Star Wars that could be polished and fixed is a monumental missight of the truth.

(Followed by 103 things Anchorhead doesn't give thought to while watching the story - as opposed to a scene by scene breakdown of the film.)

I am sorry about the length of my post, but I wanted Anchorhead to see this list. Even if it still does not change his mind about the project.

With all due respect, if there are 103 scenes you'd like to see changed to make the movie more enjoyable for you - you might want to give some serious thought to watching a different movie.

Let me clarify my original post; Star Wars doesn't need to be polished and fixed for me to enjoy it.

In fact, I prefer it not be altered at all - which is why I'm a member of this board in the first place.

When I put the DVD in, I watch Star Wars, the story of Luke Skywalker - not the color of a helmet sticker on one of the extras in a scene - or whether of not the upper piece of someone's armor on their right arm matches the guy standing next to them in line, ten people back from the actors with speaking roles - or counted the number of times Greedo blinks. For fuck's sake, man - go outdoors occasionally.

While you're making sure my viewing history is sufficient for this board - I have seen Phantom, so I have at least some idea of how the prequels look and feel.

....do you have any interest in watching Adywans special, special edition of Star Wars when it's finally finished? Because I must say (and I'm not the biggest fan of the SE either) that it does look pretty amazing.

I've never heard of it.

I've never seen the SEs, so if it's something made from those, I won't be watching it.
