my Star Wars Saga Edits (* unfinished project *)
Time

Cadavra posted the following on 2-Oct-2017 9:08 PM…

Throw in a line or two spiced together from Dooku and Saruman dialogue – vaguely talking about going to war, “the Republic cannot be fixed,” or something to that effect – and the result could be really cool.’

Keep in mind we also have all of TCW to work with. It may not be Christopher Lee (theatrical pilot aside), but it sounds exactly like him.

Good idea inserting Dooku in the funeral, but that’s by no means sufficient. I want him to actually have a role in the film, preferably a villainous one. Like I said, I want him to be to the PT what Vader was to the OT. Darth Maul, meanwhile, would be like Tarkin, or Boba Fett. I might replace Sidious with Dooku in some scenes. He could introduce Darth Maul as his associate, rather than apprentice.

Believe or not, SW already has a moon inhabited by blue people called…Pantora. With a T. I swear that must’ve been some sort of joke behind the scenes.

How do you feel about the saga continuing without Palpatine?
Time

I understand a happy ending override was inevitable, and I suppose we can go on without Yoda or Anakin/Vader. The problem is Palpatine being dead. He was always the main villain in the saga (even if it was offscreen in the early movies). Continuing past that feels like a post-script season. I can think of a few solutions, but none of them seem easy.

Make Snoke Palpatine. That would take away from Vader’s sacrifice.

Introduce some bigger bad whose in charge of both Snoke and Palpatine. That would feel incredibly contrived and inevitably lead to power creep.

Make Snoke a radically different villain. They don’t seem to be going that way, but at this stage, it’s hard to tell. In the end, the problem with this is that your heroes and villains are pretty set in stone by the whole light side dark side dichotomy. You can make their personalities different, but I can’t see them becoming as diverse as the villains in Batman or Doctor Who.

Should Disney/LFL create an Alternative Prequel Trilogy?
Time

Should they? No. Will they? No. Are they legally allowed to? Probably not.

The movies don’t need to be remade from scratch, just improved (hence fanedits). Besides they would have to match in the broad strokes to align wit established canon, making them remakes rather than a reboot. It would also be basically giving George Lucas the finger, and given the trust he put in Kathleen Kennedy, I can’t see her doing that.

Info Wanted: Can anything possibly be improved in ESB?
Time

Out of curiosity, what is your ranking from favourite to least? Having a sense of what you value in a Star Wars film might help illuminate what you feel is lacking in ESB.

MY top 2 are RotS and ANH, that I both love for different reasons (one’s emotional, the other’s lighthearted fun). After that it’s kind of ambiguous. While RotJ is by no means the worst, it’s the one movie whose mistakes actively offend me (second Death Star, Leia Skywalker). By comparison, my least favorite is AotC, which is bad simply by virtue of being boring. But hey, at least the worldbuilding’s good. I never cared for Han and Leia’s relationship. I can see how that would hamper my enjoyment of ESB.

Maybe I should just explain my tastes in general, outside of SW. I tend to gravitate towards more “kiddy” stuff a lot of the time, favoring shows like Code Lyoko and Mystery Incorporated to mainstream stuff like Breaking Bad or The Walking Dead. I’m a huge fan of Doctor Who (currently on classic season 3). I think the Harry Potter movies got progressively worse, with the Columbus ones being amazing and the Yates ones being practically unwatchable. I usually only watch fantasy (and by that I mean anything contain non-realistic elements not presented scientifically). I like trains.

Well technically, The Phantom Menace is a few months older than I am, so I definitely wasn’t around when TESB first came out. That said, I don’t think people who were are the only ones who love it. If that were the case, I’d have dismissed them as nostalgia blind ages ago. It seems to me that most people older than 10 think it’s the best, or at least second best. I may not like it that much, but I certainly don’t hate it, and I have very different tastes than mainstream audiences.

Star Wars: A (formerly?) 3-in-1 fanedit of the Original Trilogy (* unfinished project *)
Time

I think the worst thing about the Original Trilogy is that there are two Death Stars.

I’d say it’s the second worst, number one being Leia being Luke’s sister. Though I’ve already remedied that problem for my edits, I have yet to tackle this one. Though leaving the Death Star intact throughout the trilogy or having Luke only blow up the superlaser are valid options, I intend on simply moving the Emperor’s throne room to Coruscant, probably at the top of the Jedi Temple (now Imperial Palace)'s central tower. The hard part will be replacing the starry sky outside the windows with a view of Coruscant. The Death Star is destroyed by Luke in ANH and never seen again (TFA included). It’s not like anyone super important was involved in blowing it up the second time anyway, so that wouldn’t be a big loss. It would also keep us from having to follow too many battles at once, something that, while not a problem per say, feels rather unnecessary.

Of all the star wars films this was the one that needed the special edition treatment the most but Lucus was probably too afraid to add the deleted materials or was more concerned with pushing the cgi of Lucusfilm. It was not about the film and restorimg material from the cutting room floor so much but they did restore some of the cues but nowhere near as many as they should have.

Really? It’s clear in my mind that the one that most needed the restoring of deleted scenes was ANH, specifically Biggs Darklighter’s story. The worst part is that they did actually re-insert it…but only half. This is just worse because whereas we weren’t made to care about Biggs in the original cut, here we have the emotional reunion without the emotional parting, so we’re just confused as to who he is and why Luke cares about him. We don’t need the whole Tosche Station scene. Just the parts with Biggs.

TESB isn’t even second in the OT in this regard, as I find RotJ’s deleted scenes far more interesting, notably Jerjerrod’s Conflict.

While sex scenes rarely “take me out of a film,” they sure as shit would if they were in a Star Wars movie.

I don’t need a whole “sex scene” but topless Leia would’ve been pretty epic.

That qualify as appropriate in my book, and would make sense in the context of the metal bikini, though that’s in RotJ. Still I don’t see the point, though.

So far the only good idea is the droids repairing Vader’s hand.

Return of the Jedi - Remastered (Released)

Till recently the thought of OT fanedits has never entered my mind and they still never will for ANH and TESB. However, being part of this community for a while now has made me realise that ROTJ could possibly use some tweaking here and there to as you say, strengthen it in view of the other two movies.

Your edit sounds very interesting, especially with the fact you used Harmy’s DSE as the base for 95% of it. My only gripes that make me reluctant to watch it though are:

  • You left in the CGI creatures in Jabba’s palace despite removing Jedi Rocks. Never had a problem with the original scene nor Nappti Lek.

  • You kept the SE ending and music. It’s not one of my most hated changes by GL but it’s still up there with most of the big ones as it completely messes with how I feel at the end of the last SW movie (till Ep7:TFA came along anyway but ROTJ will always feel like the closer on the OT with TFA starting the next trilogy).

I don’t know if it’s to much to ask, but would you consider making a 100% DSE edition of your edit or at least revert the above matters to their DSE versions in an alternate edit?

.Val

It’s Lapti Nek, not Nappti Lek.

Harry Potter Special Extended Editions (a WIP)
Time

Darth Lucas, I suggest you change the title of this thread to better reflect its direction. The title calls them Special Extended Editions, but extending the movies doesn’t appear to be the goal, nor does adding dinosaurs stepping in front of the camera. Given that you yourself compared the goal of this project to that of Star Wars Revisited, maybe Harry Potter Revisted? Oh wait, someone already used that title.

By that logic, Griphook is also Flitwick (but only in DH). I mean, come on, these two look nothing alike. Personally, my headcanon is that the young one is the old one’s nephew, but really, it’d be nice to just have the young one in all the movies.

We should adjust Richard Harris’s voice to sound more like Michael Gambon’s.

I never noticed the change in wands. I just looked it up and apparently they changed in PoZ, yet another thing that was drastically changed in that movie. I swear it’s almost like they rebooted the series. Anyway, does somebody have some comparison pics for all the wands that were changed?, 'cause I can’t find any.

I know it’s a lot to ask for, but could we replace the old Flitwick in the first two movies with the new one?

Another daunting request would be including Dobby in some of the other movies. I know he was there in the books, and of course we can’t quite restore his full role, but it’d be nice if he didn’t just show up to die. The problem is that we have so little footage it’d be hard to even repurpose what we have. I don’t think it’s doable.

Star Wars Video Games - a general Random Thoughts thread
Time

I recently figured out what it is that Lego games are missing to be truly great: introducing new mechanics and building upon them. They need to have levels more like this, rather than repetitive, assortments of easy tasks haphazardly mixed together. It would be tricky to implement such a design formula when adapting an existing story, but I’m sure it could be done.

<strong>STAR WARS: REBELS</strong> (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

I actually successfully guessed the title of the show, but I was more concerned with the idea of a show set between ANH and TESB starring the OT characters. It’s a shame that’s not what we got. Marvel tackled that subject instead. If you’re gonna give us new characters, though, at least make them interesting. Ezra is generic AF, Sabine didn’t get proper development until season 3, and Zeb just feels unnecessary (although I guess it’s worth noting I find him slightly more endearing than most characters of his archetype), and instead, we coulda had Rex from the start. It’s kinda weird they didn’t make Ahsoka part of the main cast, as she could have easily filled Kanan’s place as the young Jedi’s master. That said, Kanan and Hera are pretty good characters.

When Luke is hiding from Vader under the throne dais, the consoles he’s using to conceal himself don’t even reach to the ground. When he screams “No!” he’s right out in the open like Vader couldn’t see him. there needs to be more of a maze of consoles and equipment underneath the throne.

I think Vader was just toying with him. He was too busy tempting Luke to bother finding him. He doesn’t want to kill him.
