will there be a grindhouse version with all the scratches damage and cue dots left intact the sse was hard to watch becouse it was to clean imo I like a 35mm film scan with all damage scratches and cue dots left intact I thought the matrix looked so beautiful with all the scratches left intact

Maybe if Harmy is feeling very kind he’ll do a grindhouse a bit like that of Jedi, hopefully with print audio 😉

My two cents would be to get the DE Reel 2 cleaned next, assuming it will be crucial in subbing the latter half of the British reel, which is damaged. I know you can scan it now as it is, but seeing as it’s vital, you might as well treat it as the next part of the preservation.
I’m sure if it came to reel 6 of the Brit print and funds had run out, the community would come to the rescue 😉

Tiny bit of feedback on the new sample (reel 1, part 5) which I’m sure you’ve already picked up on: Two misaligned frames in the “The visuals indicate life readings”… “It could mean anything” master shot. Maybe justification for a replacement shot?

Yeah, I see the ones you mean, I’ll check those frames on the scan and see what is behind it.

Sweet 😃

Single Pass Regrade of Grindhouse ESB (Released)
Time

Since Poita posted his samples I’ve been playing with the grindhouse colours too! I didn’t know about your LUT NevararGreat, thanks for re-posting! Looking forward to seeing a few scenes when they render.
As for the saturation, Dreamaster, I think you’ve done a pretty good job. I really like the very watchable colours of the Puggo Strikes Back 16mm which is also highly saturated and quite similar to your frames.
Because of fading, the grindhouse is really missing true blue, its blues either come out very navy or very cyan/turquoise/cerulean whatever you want to call it, which is why Poita’s German and British scans look so natural. I guess they’ve just faded less.

Unbelievable.
Thanks for the sample with audio. It looks and sounds amazing! I don’t think there was any speculation, to be honest. The person who wants to call bullshit on the scan should do it here and fight their corner rather than send you a pm. Except they shouldn’t because it would be waste of time.
Happy trails and cheers as always!

Ditto.
It may be that with a less lossy encode we’ll see a bit more grain, but I think you’re right, this is a better source all round. Just hope Poita can use the grindhouse as a secondary/tertiary source if he needs to. Out of the three films, I’d say Empire is the big, show-stopping spectacular, so it’s really nice to see a print that’s going to reflect that, with rich colours, sharp image and fine grain.

This new sample is terrific!
I think the efforts to regrade are perfectly valid and very good looking in their way, but I would be much more inclined to trust that the uncorrected print is a really good colour source. Certainly compared to blu-ray, despecialized and grindhouse, this one struck me as being beautifully saturated and colourful, as well as very lifelike. Weighing in just briefly on the “blue of the cave” convo, I would find it unlikely, from a cinematography point of view, that Peter Suschitzky would light that scene (and the following dark scenes outside) neutral grey and white. I quite like how it looks in the grindhouse, but that version really can’t be trusted on colour. I think it’s much more likely that it was intended to be blue. Ice gives you blue shadows, snow gives blue shadows. I’m positive the original team would have opted to give the audience an easily readable sense of cold and gathering darkness, and I think that would have led them to a blue colour palette.

I’m not saying don’t do a grade, but for me personally, this is the best looking version of reel 1 I’ve seen and I think it would be a shame to alter it too much.
On another note, Poita, would it be useful to have access to Team -1’s raw grindhouse scan, for missing frames and maybe the odd shot you might prefer? Presumably Dre’s tool would allow to you to conform the grindhouse to the colours of the German print.
Thanks so much, it’s awesome to see Empire looking this good! Although I’m no colour technician, a less compressed version would be terrific, just to see all that beautiful grain 😃

I think we should be happy that Williarob is a bit more easygoing than either Mike or -1 and that he isn’t pursuing an extraordinarily complex averaging method. Each shot in this project is supposed to be an accurate representation of the projected image of a theatrical print, not an attempt to get back to some vague idea of what the interpositive looked like. The video explaining the process plus the amount of the film completed are testament to the fact that unlike Legacy, this version may be ready in a fairly short space of time. Very exciting!
On a technical note, although the new longer sample looks terrific, I preferred the old encoding. I think it was mentioned above, but H264 is making this one a little gravelly in the busier shots, in my opinion.
Thanks so much for the hard work!

Just discovered this today. Amazing. Haven’t read the thread yet so forgive me if it’s been said, but I really hope ESB and ROTJ are planned to get similar treatment too! There’s been so many outright amazing projects on the original film in recent years sometimes it feels like the sequels are almost forgotten.

Nevertheless, GREAT JOB!!! Can’t wait to see the finished project. I really need a raise so I can start upgrading my equipment to both get and watch all this new stuff! I still have to trek over to a friends house just to burn a single layer BD…

I could be wrong, but I think Poita is the next port of call for a good ESB restoration. He’s already got some terrific tests up on his own thread.
