The Force Awakens: 1.78:1 scenes in 2D? - with recreation of IMAX scene (Released)
Time

I disagree. I think square-er frames have been used beautifully, not just in the past, but even in recent years. Recent academy ratio films like Meek’s Cutoff, Fish Tank, American Honey, Ida for example. And the IMAX 15/70 format can be really impressive. If you get a chance, find an IMAX screening of Dunkirk this summer, that’s 80% IMAX apparently. Where I do agree with you is the misleading use of the “IMAX” brand to sell seats to 2K digital performances, which are rubbish. They’re confident that the younger generation are sufficiently confused about the distinction between film and digital that they can use their ‘gold standard’ name to market a whole range of sub-par products.
I also agree that Star Wars is an odd choice for IMAX 15/70. The open matte 15/70 sequence in TFA was gone in a jiffy and few people noticed. It was edited too quickly for it to be visually worthwhile. Plus Star Wars is a cinemascope property - it’s a strange choice to shoot chunks of it in 1.43:1.
I am however, happy that it forces Disney to release the films (in a few cities at least) on celluloid. That’s a good thing. They should consult Christopher Nolan on how to avoid digital intermediaries between the 35 and 70mm camera negatives and the release prints, so we get something that (vfx aside) hasn’t touched a computer. If they’re going to use full 15/70mm they should also talk to him about how to shoot action sequences a little slower so that massive image isn’t wasted.

<strong>The 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special</strong> - a general discussion thread
Time

I’ve watched it all the way through thanks to the recent high (ish) quality releases. I have to say my mouth was agape the whole way through. It’s like some sort of bizarre, postmodern art project. It’s equal parts ridiculous and terrifying. The extended scenes of the Wookiee family howling at each other would be funny if they weren’t so damn unnerving. It also seems to have been made by people who share none of our cultural or human reference points - that was the 70s I guess. It doesn’t even reference Star Wars in a straightforward way. It’s nuts and well worth a watch just the once, but it’s not a Star Wars film, just Fox trying to make hay while the sun shines.
Still better than RotS though 😃

Info: Star Wars - open matte
Time

Great idea!
I’d look at what Christopher Nolan does in his films with IMAX. Normally the IMAX sequences are the most spectacular or exciting parts of the film, plus the opening and much of the ending. I would suggest for a potential project utilising this concept, that you identify sequences in Star Wars where you can trade off exciting action sequeces Vs. ease of open matte recreation. i.e. parts of the film that would benefit from increased image size, but where the recreation can be effectively realised. I’m no expert with AviSynth, but I would imagine star fields might be the place to start. Nice work 😃

Song Of The South - many projects, much info &amp; discussion thread (Released)
Time

Dear all,
I hope this isn’t an annoying thing to ask. I discovered this film fairly recently, and have seen some mind-blowing clips on youtube of the 35mm scan. Is there any information about the HD version of this transfer?
I’ve seen the 16mm and am aware of the 35mm DVD. I realise it may be a confidential-ish subject, so any infor via PM would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much and Merry Christmas to everyone!

The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)
Time

Fantastic news about your daughter, Poita. Wishing you and your family a very peaceful Christmas and new year!
If it’s not a silly question, you say the print that was linked to from eBay a page or so ago has been scanned - wouldn’t it produce more colour than your current two options, as it seems to be only slightly faded? From what you’ve posted so far, it doesn’t feel like much colour is missing, even when the two prints appear entirely red. But perhaps the above print has even more information?

To those of you lucky few who live near a 70mm Imax location and were able to see it that way, I am peanut butter and jealous.

No, you didn’t miss anything except the Dunkirk preview, which was terrific. Blowing Alexa 65 (6K) up to IMAX looks surprisingly bad, especially when compared to TFA’s 35m, or strikingly, 35 and 65mm segments in a Christopher Nolan film.
The blacks were grey, the colour was very subdued and quite muddy at times, and there was a heavy amount of digital grain. It seems like blockbusters are embracing celluloid releasing in a big way, which is good, but they need to realise that if they do, their first priority must be to shoot on film.

I saw this with a lot of friends at the Science Museum London on 70mm. Good news for those of you who can’t make it to an IMAX, it’s totally unnecessary. Unlike the 35mm of TFA, the Alexa 65 footage doesn’t blow up that big. It’s fuzzy and very brown for the most part and the blacks are grey, not black. If you want to see 7 thrilling mins of “Dunkirk” though then go for it 😃
My friend Sarah (who has never seen a Star Wars film, and who insisted on calling Darth Vader “Dark Vader”) liked it a lot. When I told her the Han Solo movie would come out between 8 and 9, she asked me if Han Solo was a secret number. So I think if she liked it you can safely say it wasn’t just fan service. She’s 27 and fully lucid btw.
I was dying of a cold most of the way through and cursing whenever there were bright lights or loud noises, so I think my opinion of the film is fairly skewed. I thought it was fine, but never got gripped or involved, and personally, if bringing old characters back with CGI is going to be a thing now, I will avoid like the plague. Those scenes with Cushing played like the cut scenes of the most expensive video game ever, and the action didn’t exactly contradict that feeling either. It’s fine, it’s OK, I like Gareth Edwards and wish him well. But people saying this is better than Jedi, check yourself before you wreck yourself. Now I’m off to drink my body weight in honey and lemon. Happy festivities to everyone

From what I’ve seen, the cloud city interiors in that scene are pretty warm. I think also, the TN1 print must have been very badly faded, otherwise they would have been able to use set photos, or just grade to natural skin tone and get something similar-ish to Poita’s scans. The snow and explosions in the Hoth battle could have been graded naturally as well. As is, they’re very purple, and the snow is almost entirely white and grey.
I was blown away by the grindhouse when I first saw it, but looking at it in the light of Poita’s scans and a few other references, it seems Empire was for the most part, a very naturally-timed film
