General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

I would bet any amount of money that Leia’s interrogation scene was revised by someone other than George Lucas from whatever he had intended it to be. If George ever proved one thing as a filmmaker it’s that he’s so on the nose about everything. I don’t think there’s any chance he conceived of leaving that scene off the screen.

However, George was a very good visual director. I’m sure it was his idea to have the camera follow the footsteps of the guards as they marched away from the scene, and I’ve always liked the way that was shot.

4K restoration on Star Wars

At some point both SE and OOT versions will be available. It might not be until the copyright expires and the films enter the public domain, but eventually the OOT will be available to new viewers as long as it’s preserved.

When the two versions are both made available on equal terms, it’s obvious which one will be more often viewed.

A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality.

That’s obviously not going to be true. A lot of wanting there from George.

More than likely in 100 years nobody will remember the SE, but the originals will still remain.

Some people dont even remember the originals now though.

In 100 years, nobody is going to watch these movies and remember what is was like to see them in theaters in 1977, 1980, and 1983. That feeling that some of you olds have, how seeing SW in 1977 changed the way you experienced cinema forever…people 100 years from now are not going to be able to relate to that sensation. The CGI effects are going to look dated and ridiculous. The CGI already looks dated and ridiculous now, but can you imagine what it will look like to people 100 years from now who have seen all kinds of gidgets and gadgets?

The films will be viewed strictly on story. And not through nostalgia goggles either. None of the people in that time are going to have fond memories of watching Star Wars or Hayden’s Ghost or Jedi Rocks when they were little kids. Nobody is going to be a “Star Wars” fan and think the Emperor changes in ESB are awesome because they keep the “continuity” together.

The films and each editing decision will be judged solely on merit.

When those futuristic viewers encounter the SE and OOT versions, they are going to see the same flaws we see with all of these alterations. Exposition repeated in multiple scenes. Ridiculous dodging of laser bolts and stepping on tails. Tonal inconsistencies. Dinosaurs walking in front of the camera. A proud old man replaced by a smirking teenager. And on and on and on.

One hundred years from now, the SEs will either not be remembered or they will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. History will see to it that there is no other way.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Your bloody arm’s off. No it isn’t!

Rey to suffer Luke’s fate in Empire Strikes Back, if local rumors on location are to be believed.

Zeroh said that many locals at Pinewood Studios where The Last Jedi was mainly filmed saw > Daisy Ridley wearing green sleeve that covers almost her whole arm.
This is a trick in computer-generated imagery (CGI) that will allow the editing team to make that covered part invisible in the post-production for the film, which would mean that at some point, Rey could lose her arm in Star Wars: Episode 8.

Theresa May visited the site of the burned out Grenfell Towers–where 17 fatalities have been confirmed and scores more are feared dead–for a photo-op with firefighters.

She declined to meet any of the victims or survivors.

Scum of the earth. Sorry to our British friends who have to live with her.

Star Wars Episode IX (was) to be directed by Colin Trevorrow - DUEL OF THE FATES RIP
Time

The funny thing is you’ve made about 10,000 posts criticizing Donald Trump for being a baby in the OT section of the forum. Yet here you are acting like a child again. I made a post about a movie unrelated to Disney or Star Wars except the director is attached I guess, but it causes you to carry personal grievances from other threads and pollute new ones wherever you go.

You may think this annoys me, but I actually get off on seeing you throw tantrums and embarras yourself Fink. It’s highly amusing to see a 40something year old man act like a child. Or act like Donald Trump for that matter. Over and over again.

The Book of Henry is the equivalent of eating a cake baked with salt instead of sugar, or listening to a Beatles song where the lyrics are in Esperanto—you understand the idea of what Trevorrow was going for, but the end result is an appalling, irradiated mess, a Frankenstein’s monster version of a feel-good classic. It might be quickly forgotten as a well-meaning flop, but The Book of Henry deserves to linger—it’s like an unsettling dream you can’t quite remember, a familiar story where all the pieces just seemed out of place.

The Book of Henry honestly sounds like one of the worst movie ever made.

It does not suffice to call The Book of Henry bad; it’s nonfunctional, so poorly conceived from the ground up as to slip out of the grasp of the usual standards one applies to narrative film.

This is bad. Like, really bad. Disney’s got to hire someone competent to direct this movie.

I’m thinking about that scene on the Executor bridge near the end of ROTJ…

“Too late!”

Insert SE alterations into other movies

From another thread, lamenting how the general public doesn’t seem to care about the SE changes and the OOT/SE debate:

Too bad we can’t add a bunch of CGI crap to The Wizard of Oz just to see if anybody notices. Purely as a thought experiment of course.
If any movie is burned into the public consciousness, it’s that one.

This got me thinking, how could we edit George’s abominations into other people’s favorite movies to piss them off?

I’ll start with the Wizard of Oz:

When Dorothy starts skipping down the yellow brick road, a giant ****ing dinosaur blocks out the screen.

Right before Dorothy sings “Somewhere over the rainbow”, Sy Snootles busts out Jedi Rocks instead.

When the witch gets hit with the H2O, instead of “I’m melting” we hear Vader’s “NOOOOOO!”

Any other ideas?

My Tarkin-related storytelling complaint is that Tarkin + Vader + Krennic is (at least) one main villain too many. It is narrative bloat for the sake of fan service. (Spider-man 3-esque) This might just be a taste thing but I prefer a more efficient sort of storytelling than that.

No, you are absolutely correct BMH. Krennic should have been the only villain in R1, plus Vader in the very last scene.

There was absolutely no need to have Tarkin in R1, not even the Death Star, which should have just been alluded to and remained an ominous threat off-screen.

But bad storytellers are gonna bad storytell. And the fans gotta have that fanservice and all.

4K restoration on Star Wars

I bit the bullet and contacted everyone I know at Disney, that is in any way related to film restoration. The answer every time wasn’t a ‘can’t say’ or ‘no comment’ but more a baffled “Original Versions? No, no-one is assigned to anything like that” or variations on that theme.
I don’t think they have any plans at all for an original release, or at least nothing in the next five years, things could always change, but nothing appears to be even vaguely on the drawing board.

With that in mind, and the awful feeling in my gut that the SE of Star Wars has now been around for longer than the time between the first screening of Star Wars in 1977 and the Special Edition of ANH being released, I am putting together a team of professional restoration people from companies I work for and have worked for in the past, to restore the damn thing from the available prints, in 4K at a much higher quality level than we have been able to do before. The fan base has achieved amazing things, but so much more can be done now.
Starting with Empire as it is the one about to disappear due to print fade, and then Star Wars, and finally Jedi.
There are places in the world where the Star Wars copyright runs out within the next decade, I feel it is important that a proper, professional restoration takes place now, and is held until the copyright expires, to ensure that the original theatrical versions are not lost. Also that the originals are available, and restored for anyone studying film history, or researchers to be able to use as a definitive version, representative of the films as they were in 1977, 1980 and 1983.
I know many love the Special Editions, and I don’t begrudge their existence, but film history is also important to preserve.

I also have a personal health deadline that is approaching slowly, and I want to ensure this gets done, even if I can’t continue. I have registered an official archive, which lets us hold prints and restore them, I am getting some help to get the online side of things up and running, but hopefully by the end of next month, we will have it all up and running.
More news soon.

I completely missed this post of yours Poita. I’m sad to hear about your health, I hope it improves. Can’t wait for more updates on your project. May the force be with you.
