Star Wars moving forward without Ms. Fisher
Time

Disney hasn’t done a single thing right in 5 years. No OOT. Two mediocre schlock movies. One of them entirely cribbed from the original. And a bunch of annoying paid reviewers spamming the internet later.

And what have we got?

Disney Wars! Vader vs. Predator. Vader vs. Magneto. AT-STs! Ay Tee Es Tees! Toys. Merchandise! Theme park rides.

What a wonderful smell they’ve discovered…

Are the Prequels Even Worth Watching Once?

2. Lack of an emotional connection towards the Jedi Order

People don’t develop emotional connections to “orders”. They develop emotional connections with characters. Slapping eleventy Jedi on screen was a very poor decision. Making them all get wiped out with almost no effort by hysterically inaccurate stormtroopers was even worse and lazy.

Star Wars Episode IX And Beyond....
Time

Woody Harrelson has been cast to star in the young Han Solo standalone movie (that is probably not going to stand on its own).

When asked about the casting choice, the co-directors (??) cited his ping pong ability. Seriously.

“We couldn’t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody,” directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who previously worked on The Lego Movie, said in a statement posted on StarWars.com. “His ability to find both humor and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique. He is also very good at ping pong.”

And apparently they are going to lift his character right out of The Hunger Games:

The news comes a week after Variety quoted sources as saying that Harrelson was in early talks to join the film and was the top choice to play Han Solo’s mentor.

All of the signs are there for a colossal bomb.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

To each their own but I don’t see how anyone could feel Rogue One (or The Force Awakens for that matter) are better films than Jedi. Rogue One is a total mess, especially in the first half, with poorly defined characters and really bad direction and editing. There is nothing like the Forest Whittaker character in Jedi, some guy who stops the entire narrative flow of the film for two scenes where he does nothing but talk and then stand there and die. Nothing like the giant plothole of Cassian just deciding not to shoot someone important for…reasons. Etc. Etc.

Jedi is a mostly well put-together and satisfying movie that for whatever reason Lucas sprinkled in some prequel-style garbage stains throughout. The new films are not even well conceived at very basic story and filmmaking levels. I don’t see how they even compare.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Towne, I thought 2.7 looked gorgeous. After watching all of the Despecialized versions, I’m amazed that Star Wars looks the best and needs the least amount of work compared to Empire and Jedi (as far as Re-specializing them goes, anyway). The dewback animation near the cantina needs improvement, but literally that’s the only negative thing I noticed in over 2 hours. Every single other shot looks wonderful. Even if LFL does release the OOT, they wouldn’t be capable of releasing a better version of Star Wars imo.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

I just watched Jedi for the first time in more than 10 years, and surprisingly I liked most of the Endor scenes, which I used to find pretty boring. I like the Ewoks although I do hate most of the nonsense that goes on with them in battle, plus that ridiculous scene where one of them steals the speeder bike.

On the other hand, this was the first time I really felt like I disliked most of the scenes on Tatooine. The production value was just so bad and you can really see where the film was missing Gary Kurtz’s refinement. The barge fight is fun and Jabba is Jabba, but otherwise there’s nothing to like in this movie for 40 minutes or whatever.

I would still rank the films like this however:

  1. Empire Strikes Back
  2. Star Wars
  1. Return of the Jedi
  1. Rogue One
  2. The Force Awakens
  1. The Phantom Menace
  1. Revenge of the Sith
  2. Attack of the Clones

Spaces indicate a pretty big gap to the next group.

I hate the first scene in The Force Awakens, but I really liked the rest of the first act and it’s much better than anything in Rogue One. However, once they got off Jakku I hated the rest of it much more than I hated anything in Rogue One, so that’s why I have them in that order.

Are the Prequels Even Worth Watching Once?

I’ve only seen the prequels once each, and I wish I hadn’t. I wish I could erase my memory of those films because they ruin certain parts of Star Wars for me.

Why? The OT existed for a long time before the prequels ever came out. The films resonated with people and they filled in the blanks with their own ideas, whatever impression was left upon them.

Obi-Wan told us that Anakin was the best pilot in the galaxy, a cunning warrior, and a good friend. Especially considering the way the OT was told through Luke’s perspective and his relationship with his dad, I always envisioned Anakin as being a mature, father-like figure, and a powerful and trusted Jedi, just like Obi-Wan and Yoda had described. Do the prequels prevent anyone from continuing to view Anakin in that light? Not for me. I could care less. Anakin will always be exactly as he was implied in the OT, not more, and not less.
