Attempting to erase the originals from history…that’s a completely different matter though.

This turn of events exemplifies the degree of delusion some people can be driven to by their unfulfilled desires.
Film restorations invariably involve the use of several different sources.
Episode I is not digital.
He had just done AOTC and was working on ROTS when the 2004 masters were done. He was already in all-digital mode, and I am certain he wanted the OT DVDS to aesthetically match up with what he was making at the time.
George didn’t want them to look good next to his crap digital fake world prequels. He probably ordered the 2004 masters to be butchered intentionally out of spite.

But you don’t know anything. I don’t say that to be rude, I don’t know anything about Verta’s meeting either, but for all anyone knows a ton of awesome stuff came of his meeting.
And for all we know, a ton of Santa’s elves are working on restoring the OOT too by the way.
Since no OOT has been released, and year after year for 20 years we have had nothing but the SE and antiquated garbage LD transfers, the burden of proof lies on the side of those claiming the OOT is just around the corner, not the other way around.
If you guys wanna wait until celebration, then whatever. But if the tune doesn’t change after that, then there is going to be a whole lot of hypocrisy on this board. George’s doors were burning down after a year. Now a generation later and it’s “Disney is going to release the OOT next year”…and then “Disney is going to release the OOT leading up to TFA”…and now “Disney is going to release the OOT for the 40th anniversary”. We know some of the posters are just waiting to move onto the “Disney is going to release the OOT after 2020” nonsense.
They aren’t going to do ****. They are going to continue making **** rip-off movies with ridiculous plotholes, bad acting and directing, scripts written by junior high students, and raking in billions of dollars thanks to brain dead franchise fans.
Also, Fox isn’t and was never going to pay for a restoration of Lucasfilm’s property just to distribute it on home media.
Says who? That is what happens with all film restorations. Every single one. They are old movies. They get released on home video. They are 30 years old. 70 years old. Whatever. They aren’t getting released theatrically to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars. They are old movies. And yet they get restored all the time.
There is some evidence. It might not be concrete, but it’s still evidence. For example, there’s credible word that Disney/Lucasfilm requested a scan of the Library of Congress’s film print of Star Wars.
It’s just a rumor, and even if that’s true, how does that possibly equate to them releasing the OOT this year? How many steps do you have to jump to reach that conclusion?
There are also at least three different people that I’ve interacted with online that claim it’s happening this year; they may all be wrong, that’s completely possible, but it’s still evidence, even if it’s hearsay.
Yeah well, my aunt and uncle, this kid around the block, and that dirty guy with a beard who lives in a van down by the river all told me that too. I guess we can count that as a guarantee.

You’re right, it means nothing. From the mid-1990s until 2017, Fox has had the original cut frames in their possession, and in all 20-something of those years, the OOT was never restored and never released. And as far as anyone knows, absolutely nothing came of Mike Verta’s meeting.

There is literally nothing to indicate that Disney and Lucasfilm will be releasing the OOT…ever. It is virtually certain that any 40th anniversary special announcement will pertain to the 4k scan of the Special Edition and yet another Special Edition release.
Sorry Imp, but I don’t think you know too much about this. Kersh didn’t shoot any master shots on Empire, which kept Lucas from fucking up the movie in the editing room. That was the main reason he stood over Marquand’s shoulder the entire time during filming of ROTJ.
People watching Harmy’s versions already are. Whether it’s officially released or not, Lucasfilm still owns the material.

There aren’t different “versions” of the movies. There are the original theatrical releases, and then there are the alterations. The ones that were released in movie theaters were the movies that won lots of awards. They aired on television and were sold in various home video formats for two decades. Then, they were altered, and the person who altered them attempted to erase the originals from existence.

I don’t begrudge anyone liking the Disney movies, even if they do suck. It’s their preference. But it does suck to see the same three people, Hasbro, Fink, and DominicanBob policing every thread on the forum in their neverending, tens of thousands of posts crusade to stamp out negative sentiment and criticism of a couple of **** movies. Especially on an OOT forum.

I’m invited to a Star Wars marathon, and they insist on starting with the prequels. Not only that, but they will defend the prequels. Thankfully I convinced them to use Harmy’s Despecialized for the OT. Since they don’t care either way for the alterations (though I wish they did), I was able to get my way.
I just wish I didn’t have to waste 6 hours on the PT. I watched the Holiday Special today to brace myself, but I found the Holiday Special much more enjoyable than AOTC and ROTS. Why am I surrounded by people who call ROTS their favorite of the series?
It’s not just that it is a waste of time. It’s that the entire story is different if you watch Episodes 1-6. It’s not even the same story as the OT.
To each their own, but I would never participate in this kind of thing.

The industry reporter I spoke to last year said the same thing. Disney isn’t releasing the OOT because George doesn’t want them to.

That’s different from being in complete creative control.
George Lucas undoubtedly has strengths as a filmmaker, even to this day. But he has a lot of weaknesses, and I don’t think his vision of Star Wars was ever the same as the one that got portrayed in the OT.
Anything made by George Lucas 1990s and beyond would have been a terrible movie. He did his best to ruin Return of the Jedi, and spent most of the 1980s making the terrible Ewoks and Droids TV shows and cartoons.
The man had a lot of positive attributes as a filmmaker, and when working in collaboration with others who brought their own skill sets and talents to the production, he was able to make a few brilliant films. Once he gained the power and money to do whatever he wanted, his limitations went on full display.
Well given that practically everyone here has said that they’ll hold out until Celebration/May 25, or this fall at the latest, what exactly are you so bitter against us about? I guarantee you hell will be raised against Kennedy/Lucasfilm on this site if there’s no OUT announcement by the end of May.
I’m not bitter towards anyone here or any other OOT fan. I’m just dumbfounded why they keep getting a free pass from people. My enmity is directed at Disney and Lucasfilm, not you guys.
