What is wrong with... <strong>Attack of the Clones</strong>? - a general discussion thread

Grievous is just a villain, and Obi-wan fights him. It’s stupid but there it is, it exists for that reason. C3PO and the factory is ??? who even knows.

It wasn’t in the script. The Indulgent One came up with the scene on set and just thought it would be cool to put in the movie.

Star Wars at box office

I’m only posting this because he makes a specific reference to Star Wars:

Richard Gere has argued his vocal stance on Tibet has cost him Hollywood blockbuster roles because the academy is fearful of alienating its burgeoning Chinese audience.

“There are definitely movies that I can’t be in because the Chinese will say, ‘Not with him,’” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

“I recently had an episode where someone said they could not finance a film with me because it would upset the Chinese.”

Fortunately, the actor made it clear he was not upset about not being given the roles for studio blockbusters. “I’m not interested in playing the wizened Jedi in your tentpole,” he said. “I was successful enough in the last three decades that I can afford to do these [smaller films] now.”

Besides basic casting decisions (Rogue 1, Independence Day 2016 come to mind), there are also any number of films where the script was altered, in order to accommodate more screen time for the Chinese supporting roles.

And of course, at a more fundamental level, when financing is needed for something that is not a comic book tentpole, Chinese investors will only bankroll state-approved films. There is also the issue of Chinese people in the business who are not allowed to associate with certain film projects in any way, under direct threat to themselves and especially their families back home.

Rogue One * <em>Spoilers</em> * Thread

CGI Tarkin had a lot more screen time and a much more prominent role. The CGI characters can’t act and they don’t coordinate very tiny muscle movements in the face right. When I saw the movie twice in theaters I too thought Leia looked much better, whereas Tarkin looked fake to me, but I think that’s probably just down to her barely getting on screen.

Even then, she looked more realistic but soulless. Kinda like you were looking at a picture of a dead woman from long ago when she was very young. And I thought that before everything happened with Carrie.

But it was still better than Tarkin. He just looked like a video game character to me.

The “fuck off” was in regards to the persistently annoying fact that you can’t get two posts into an argument without being a pompous dick.

You know Haseo and I don’t exactly see things the same 90% of the time, right? And yet we managed to civilly engage each other for a few posts. Seems like the problem is you, not me.

I wasn’t embarassed by anything because if I had been that would imply I was wrong and you were right. The fact that you think you know more about good filmmaking than any and everyone here would be funny if it weren’t so sad.

I don’t know anything or everything and I never claimed I did. I’m not Rey, after all. 😉

Oh fuck off.

See this is the problem with you. Haseo and I, and then later you and Tobar, were engaging in a discussion. When you didn’t like someone’s reply, you made an ass of yourself with your comment. Which was particularly funny, because you clearly don’t even understand the terms you are using. I wouldn’t have pointed it out and embarrassed you if you hadn’t been an asshole in the first place, though.

You should try thinking a little harder. As I said there is nothing convenient about her understanding of multiple languages. What it does is show that Rey is someone who’s spent a lot of time learning about a lot of different things.

Apparently she learned everything. Thank you for clearing that up for us Sherlock, I guess we can all move along now.

something integral to the character from her conception. There is no evidence to support our theories on how exactly Rey was written so for me all that matters is that her competency is explained and for the most part it is.

How can being able to do anything and everything whenever the plot calls for it be an integral part of someone’s character?

Now you know where the criticism comes from. She can do this thing. She can do that totally unrelated thing. She can do EVERYTHING! One of those skills or a subset of those skills might enhance her characterization (not her character), but when someone can do everything, and the audience reacts with amazement–OMG, is there anything this Rey can’t do!?–suddenly you have a very poorly designed protagonist and story.

I don’t care for the term Mary Sue because it unnecessarily inserts gender into a conversation that can apply equally to male and female characters alike. But I don’t think the criticism has to do with no explanation offered. I think it has to do with lazy writing, and having a character who can do seemingly anything and everything whenever convenience calls for it.

Once you have established such a character and such a story, simply going back into the script and inserting an explanation for all of their endless abilities – seems to not address the problem in the first place.
