Which did you prefer, the SE or the 2004 DVD edition?

Probably the DVDs. I didn't really mind the changes back in 1997 (might be because I never had a chance to watch the originals in anything other than borrowed taped-off-TV VHS') and I don't mind them very much now. I can live with Morrison doing the voice of Boba Fett and Hayden as Anakin's force ghost (although I do think the latter was exceptionally sloppily done. I mean that I don't mind the general idea. It certainly worked better after I had watched ROTS).

The new changes and the restoration job might be a little dodgy, but I think this is something that we have asked for ourselves. It angered me to watch people on forums complain how half-assed the new DVD's were, cause it was their own fault; weeks before the release, people were happily sharing DivX's of all three movies. Lucas would have lost incredible amounts of money had he not released it earlier. Because just a few people were greedy, every single SW fan now has to watch muted lightsabers, blue shirts and sunburned rebel officers. If they had waited, we could have had a much more polished version, but somebody didn't like it that. Because Lucas had to rush it in order to avoid losing money, the quality control was too loose. So I would blame these internet pirates rather than Lucas and Lowry.

Overall, I'm just very grateful that we even have the movies on DVD, but I am also quite glad that I have my old SE VHS' and the ability to download those beautiful LD transfers.

You share a similar view as mine. Hopefully, they will do a new DVD release that is free of these errors and will be exactly the way he wants it, finally.

Lucas didn't have the original destroyed. It is locked away in the archives. The official site confirmed that Kevin Burns, who did the Empire of Dreams documentary, was given access to it for use in the documentary. However, that segment was ultimately not included in the documentary.

Yeah, I get pretty fed up with the bashing. I mean, I can't go to ANY messaage board even remotely related to Star Wars without every topic it seems diverging into either a PT vs OT or "I hate Lucas" thread. I mean, I post at the IMDb frequently, and you should read some of the crap they post there. The Star Wars threads at the IMDb are some of the most unintelligient I have ever read. That's why I tend to post at the 2001 and Blade Runner threads, wherre everyone actually discusses the content and is very serious about everything. On those boards you don't hear crap like "Ridley Scott ruined the film with the DC." or "release the theatrical version on DVD." The posts focus on the film itself, not on everyone's bitching and whining.

Adam, we know where you stand on that, just allow other people to have a different stance. Some people don't believe starwars to be the first three prequels but just the last three. Cut people some slack.

What I am saying is that you cannot state as fact that the prequels are not part of Star Wars. You can only say it as your opinion.

With no more movies coming out, I think this is natural that the series is going downhill. There are still Star Wars comics, books, etc coming out. but most of them are prequel era or the new jedi order era, which isn't my cup of tea. But the good news is that Star Wars seems to be doing better than Star Trek. That francise seems to be much closer to death.
And no, I didn't mean anything as a jab at Trek. I like Trek as well, at least some of it (original series and NG) but with the failure of "Enterprise", the series has very quickly died. Much faster than Star Wars has done.

You can't forget that the live-action and 3D animated series will be coming out as well, which will keep star wars alive. Also, all the films will be rereleased in 3D starting in 2007.

And yes- I too get the heeby-jeebies when I have to call 'Star Wars' by the new subtitle 'A New Hope'... talk about a pun getting a life of its own! Sheesh.

Now seriously, and I hate to sound like an ass, but why do you hate calling it by its proper title of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope? Calling it "Star Wars" would seem a little all-encompassing, don't you think?

LOL... kids these days. Uh, you see there was, once upon a time, a time in which you could say the title 'Star Wars' and people knew you were referring to just that- the film that was released in theaters that was titled 'Star Wars'- that WAS its proper title. That's what it was released under and that's what it was referred to. The name kept kept bulkier and bulkier with every permutation.

And Mr. Bungle I agree that many of my friends know what I'm talking about when I say 'Star Wars' but not only do many of those friends now have kids who, after being introduced to the SW 'empire' of products that now exist, have no idea what you're talking about when you just refer to the first film- 'Star Wars' as just that. That said the general public doesn't give a rat's patoot whether its 'Star Wars', 'A New Hope', 'Star Trek', 'Xena' or whatever... most folks just hear 'sci-fi' and tune out.

And adam, check out the IMDB page for 'Star Wars' for all the exciting name changes:

I know. And I understand. It's just that I prefer to call it what its proper name is. That is, what Lucas intended it to be before the studios changed it out of fear that the audience would be confused. Plus, it is the fourth part of a six-part series. As I said, calling it "Star Wars" would seem a little all-encompassing to me.

The things I have been noticing, is how they are mixing the pt and OT together now like they have always been together all these years. All the books about star wars mix the pt and OT together, on the back of the OT DVDS they describe the OT in relation to the new pt. It just makes me sick.

Now that I like. That is a step in a better direction, IMHO. And besides, they are all in the same universe anyway, what's the problem?

Star Wars to me is in one of the worst states ever if not worst, the films are of a lower quality IMO, only Sith i felt raised above the average, I dont know the state the video games, the books and toys are in because i have no interest,

You need to read: Labyrinth of Evil, the ROTS novelization, and Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader. They are EXCELLENT novels.
