What You're Reading Now: Revisited
Time
Is it better than the film? I am one of the three people who haven't actually watched Blade Runner, and I am reading the book before I watch the movie. This should help me judge whether Blade Runner actually is the classic everyone says it is, compared to the book.

Anyway, of all the books I've read, the most incredible as far as story has to be Brave New World. It was a classic on so many levels, criticizing all major types of human behavior and economic systems. Wow. It seems that it, along with other works like Lucas' THX-1138 film, were ripped off in "The Island" earlier this year.

I have seen the Holiday Special!
Time
According to an old "Filmfax" magazine, he wrote the story and was quite involved with the Fett cartoon, but didn't have the time for anything else. He apparebnt;ly sat down with the producers and created a basic plot outline. He did in fact intend the basic story to be there, of Chewie returning to his family for Life Day, and be evading the empire. What they (the producers Ken and Mitzie Welch) did was take HIS script and basically rewrite many scenes without his knowledge or approval. And the original director, David Acomba, was fired at the very start due to "creative differences." Acomba was an old roommate of Lucas' in college, and knew his ways, and what he expected pretty well. What happened was with a horrible script, 20th century fox made the producers/directors film what had been written. And the actors didn't question the producers, Mark Hamill said he merely was "making those above him happy." When Lucas saw the finished product, he was horrified. I mean, the basic story was still there, but the format he had originally envisioned was destroyed.

Well, I can't exactly tell you the details, as I'm sworn to secrecy. But I can tell you this: A definitive version IS in the works by someone, and it will be THE best possible version with awesome bonus features and such.

You know, when you really get down to it, and get past all of the silly aspects of the holiday special, there really is something there that does what Lucas intended it to do originally. Originally, his idea was for it to tie together the plots of ANH and ESB through the story of this holiday special. Well, what actually happens does do that pretty well. You basically see Vader attempting to hunt down the rebels responsible for the first death star's destruction. Yes, it does turn out to look very stupid, but that IS what happens. I mean, they actually blockade Kashyyyk and all in their search. Seems like a somewhat worthy piece of star wars history to me.

Watching in order 1-6 is screwing up the original SW for newcomers!

That is the major difference between the older (you) and the newer (myself) fans. To you, the Luke story is most interesting, and the PT serves as a backstory. To me, the story is about the rise, fall, and redmption of Anakin Skywalker by his son, and the restoration of the Jedi Order by his son. (I also count the post-ROTJ stuff.) Both men are the main characters, I'll agree with that. But to me, the PT adds the depth to the story, rather than simply being the "backstory to the main story."

The one thing I have noticed, is if you like the EU Books, and I have a friend that does, you tend to like the saga as 1-6, and are more interested in the whole galaxy of Star Wars, while liking the rise, fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker.

Personaly, I have never read an EU book, for some reason it just doesn't interest me, but the books continue on with the whole story, that some people see it as giving the saga more depth, and other feel it is just plain boring.

Exactly. I really have enjoyed the EU. It certainly does, in my opinion , add so much more to the story than what is seen in the films. The OT, or even all six by themselves, are seen as part of a larger whole when put with the EU. In fact, I can't see how someone can call themselves a fan without appreciating, or at least trying to appreciate all parts of the story. As a wise man once said: "To understand the great mystery, you must study all of its aspects...
