Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Does anyone else suspect that the villain General Hux (Domnhall Gleeson's character) is named for the Huxtable family from The Cosby Show -- ie, that the name might be a swipe of sorts at Bill Cosby, given what's come to light about him in the past year?

Abrams claims to be unable to remember where the name came from. Maybe that's true. Or maybe it's plausible deniability.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

Maybe the "Knights of Ren" are the equivalent of the old-EU "Imperial Knights" or the Sith as presented in the 1974 rough draft: basically Jedi who are loyal to the Empire (and thus technically villains), but who don't use the Force for evil stuff like trying to conquer the galaxy at large.

In other words, rpvee may be right in suggesting that Kylo Ren is the worst of a not-quite-so-bad bunch.

I think they went overboard with Threepio's arm. If it had just been his hand or a finger or a shoulder or something it would have been an interesting new quirk.

But the entire arm is a big distraction. If it was a smaller part it would make sense that they never got around to replacing the temporary spare but that arm just screams replace me.

While this isn't something I really have strong opinions on, it seems to depend on the lighting and grading. Promotional shots look very red, while the behind the scenes doc, from what I recall, stood out less as it was fairly dark.

Anyway, we've yet to see what they even have to say about the arm in the film. If it's just scrap or means something more, etc. Or maybe the point is that it's supposed to scream 'replace me', and they haven't.

Or maybe Threepio just got on the wrong side of a Wookiee during a chess game. ;P

How you pictured Anakin pre-PT

How I pictured Anakin pre-PT:

As a wise, pragmatic, passionate starfighter pilot and Jedi Knight who was seduced by the Dark Side by a force more powerful than himself

How I would not have pictured Anakin, EVER, pre PT:

As a pre-teen (or twenty-something) empty-headed idiot of low birth and low character who was "drafted" into the Jedi based on a "hunch" by a malcontent who was himself not highly regarded

"Low birth"? I didn't realize that heroes born into poverty weren't really heroes somehow. :P

Not that it makes any difference, but if they were going for a villain on each Blu-ray cover, it should have gone:

Maul

Dooku

Grevious

Tarkin

Vader

Emperor

I thought the exact same thing.

So is there any actual new stuff (i.e., previously unseen) on the steelbook Blu discs, or is it just a completely shameless money grab with no redeeming value whatsoever?

in the news article they say "previously-released extensive special features", so no, nothing new.

Thanks. I guess I was wrong... there is one redeeming value, in that it seems there's nothing on these re-releases worth my money.

Scooby-Doo is in Star Trek 6?

Silly doubleohfive. I was actually referring to the intercuts to the principal conspirators (Admiral Cartwright, General Chang, and Nanclus the Romulan Ambassador) during the scene when Spock obtains their names from a forcible mind-meld with Valeris.

A highly distracting addition to what had been a very tense scene--and the added sound effects do nothing to improve the jarring feel of the cut-aways.

Exactly, I call that the Scooby-Doo ending.

It's really more like the middle of the film (well, two-thirds of the way in). So it's kind of a Muddled Middle.

*ba-dum-tsh*

SilverWook, as usual, shows up with an explanation that's quite tidy.

Worst Blu-ray transfers thread
Time

Also, studio executives likely think there's not much profit in it, given that the shorts are technically public domain.

That problem was "solved" in some of Paramount's recent transfers by creating a "Special Edition" release (with all the quality that implies).

Namely, they replaced the ending Paramount logo of all the cartoons with the one found in the very first short--including the audio track, which in the later shorts quite often continued on from the sound and music in the cartoon proper. Result: incomplete audio.

(For instance, the ending music in "Jungle Drums"-- the vintage WWII song "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition" -- loses the final bit of its chorus this way.)
