Qui-Gon Jinn... sounds like the name of a beer
Time
This issue bugged me at first, but then as I watched Ep I again (and again) and later Ep II, I realized Yoda did instruct Obi-Wan, so what he said was also true, at least from a certain point of view. Yoda gives advice and instruction to Obi-Wan after Qui-Gon's passage. Just because we don't see him in a training scenario doesn't contradict what Obi-Wan said. Plus, if Qui-Gon was dead, and Qui-Gon's mentor Dooku left the order, then next up the chain is Yoda. This is likely why Yoda continues to have as much direct involvement with Obi-Wan as he does. With thousands of Jedi protecting the Galaxy, Obi-Wan does get a lot of face time with Yoda. Consider this: If a Jedi Knight is the equivalent of middle-management in a 1,000+ corporation, it's very unusual for somebody at that level to get a lot of face time with the board of directors. Or, if you prefer a religious analogy (perhaps more fitting for a Jedi) it is very rare for parish priests to get face time with the Archbishops or the Pope. I'd say that Obi-Wan gets a healthy amount of instruction from Yoda.

I don't mind Jabba in ANH so much, but I would have changed his dialogue somewhat to make it less redundant from Greedo's dialogue. I've actually done this in my re-edit of the ANH SE as an optional subtitle track. Also, I would have used the original puppet instead of a CG recreation. Film the puppet meticulously against a blue screen and superimpose it in instead of the CG nightmare that was. Kinda like how we saw Tom Hanks shake hands with President Kennedy. Reason being ... the puppet looked real because the puppet WAS real. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING created in a computer looks tactile.

So, if they actually took the time to make a new CG Jabba in 2004, why couldn't they at least get his eye color right? Jabba's eyes were a deep red, not yellow. They spent this kind of time making the CG yoda look as much like the ESB puppet as they could. Why didn't they spend that kind of time on Jabba? Hacks!

SW Photo Spread in Vanity Fair

I think that since none of the other actors are in character, it was most unfortunate to leave Daniels, Baker, Prowse, Mayhew, Jones and Oz out of the picture. Also, I question where Temura Morrison or Jeremy Bulloch, or the Boba Fett costume is. For all the coolness of this picture, there are some curious omissions like that.

Now what would be REALLY cool? This entire group of people sitting down together in one room to watch all six films, and letting THAT be a commentary track for each DVD.

The irony is astounding. That they'd create a spin-off network to actually show music. *shakes head ruefully*

Anyhoo, back to the topic, I actually prefer the Ep I soundtrack to the Ep VI soundtrack, on the whole. Darth Vader's death, the brother/sister theme and the final duel between Vader and Luke are all excellent musical cues, but I really did like the Duel of the Fates theme, and the flag parade theme more than anything Ewok related. Much as I hate to say it, Williams music for the Ewoks further underscored their childishness. A more mature musical theme would undoubtedly make us think a little different of them, I'm sure.

I still want an ultimate edition of Ep II.

I get that the notion is to remove the sound altogether. I'm more curious about the process to do this, given the lack of source material without the sound present. EQing it out? Crossfades? With the little bit of music underneath, it'll be tricky, but so is just about everything else you're tackling in the restoration. Having gone through pains over the whole "wesa free" issue -- just locating another source and then finding a matching edit point that didn't make the splice obvious -- was a task. Getting something as simple as this klunk out is going to be fun, in a dentist drill kinda way. I hope you'll share the techniques and process with us in detail. As an audio guy, I'm keen on learning.

I think that is really going to play out like this: Mace Windu knocks Palpatine ugly before getting killed, you know, just so he don't go out like some punk. Then Palpatine looks in the mirror and embraces the Dark Side like never before, enabling him to best Yoda in a saber duel. He takes Yoda's saber (hence why we never see him wield one again) and banishes Yoda to a swamp. Yoda farts on his way out. Then Palpatine realizes
how old and worthless his current apprentice is, not to mention this octogenarian is actually better looking now, and so he makes a whole bunch of secret plans to make that hotheaded Anakin Skywalker succumb to the Dark Side, kill the old guy, and become the new Apprentice. This climactic scene takes place in the Emperor's Board Room, where he puts out his hand in Jedi Mind Trick fashion and says to Dooku, "You're Fired."

Little does Skywalker know that his real plan is to make his new apprentice even uglier than he is. He sends him to a volcano to fight with his old master, figuring the lava can do an even better job than Mace Windu at knocking somebody ugly. And in a stunning new plot twist: This is ultimately because Palpatine is trying to seduce some young chick named Mara Jade, who currently thinks this this Skywalker guy is hot and wants to see if that mechanical hand can go like a machine all night, if ya know what I mean. Little does Palpatine know that Mara is a very, very niche fetishist, who is attracted to all guys named Skywalker with a mechanical hand.

Iris out to the credits.

The truth is, and he's practically admitted this, is that he hadn't directed a film in 20 years and wanted to knock the rust off before diving into the prequels. Great way to hone your skills, George. By screwing up one of your previous collaborations with your own single-minded vision.

Have I mentioned how much I hate Jedi Rocks lately? (Damn, I'm going to need to add that to my sig soon)

"Across the Stars" was a medley of all the different themes for AOTC. Not the love theme. A lot of people call the love theme by this name, but really, "Across the Stars" was a promotional gimick for Episode II. I really didn't like it when it debuted on MTV. I thought the song was all herky jerky. Only weeks later was it clear that it was a medley. Chalk that up to MTV being full of dumbasses who don't actually report any news about a new song.

That is, when MTV actually does something music related. They don't call it eMpTV for nothing.

***The "ISOMIX" feedback thread ***

Unfortunately, the film version of Lapti Nek is not available anywhere that I know of. I recall reading that the masters for the film version of Lapti Nek and other Max Rebo source music were simply lost and hence they weren't included on the Anthology Boxed Set CD. I doubt this is the case, but I don't know why it wouldn't be released otherwise on the Anthology Boxed Set. So if Lapti Nek is featured in the Isomix DVD, then it probably is indeed the version from the Anthology Boxed Set and not the original film version. The only person who may know of a copy of the film version would be Neil S. Bulk. Neil is our resident expert on Lapti Nek and Yub Nub. Neil, you listening?

By the way, the film version AND the album version of Yub Nub (er, "Ewok Celebration") are both available on the Anthology Boxed Set.
