STAR WARS: The Torrents thread
Time
They're sparse at best. There is a greater reason to have them on the DL version than the SL version, but nonetheless, menus do help with compliance on older models. For the SL version that's been torrented, it really just allows selection of the two subtitle streams. There is no motion and audio in the menus. Especially for the SL, I thought it best to reserve all possible space for the video stream.

The DL version does have more features. 5.1, 2.0 and the commentary.

If ever I finish ANH there will be several more things. Alternate subtitles that make Jabba's scene less redundant and more effective. And perhaps a big fat easter egg that'll be fun for years to come.

It's my wife's birthday today SO I'll be posting this later tonight (in the wee hours!) so you'll all have this soon!

Rik, email me the relevant NFO and other such files and I'll be able to seed without needing to take the time to download. That should help speed things along.

Jay,

For starters, you may wish to run a set of banner ads that link to star wars memorabilia on some of the larger sites like Amazon and AllPosters.com. I believe they have a program where you can receive a cut of monies received from sales referred from the site.

Hope this helps. There may be other sites that also have programs like this whose products would be relevant to our topics. I'm thinking hardware e-tailers, blank media e-tailers (Meritline?) and things like that. The more diligent among us could discipline ourselves to make that happen.

Of course, anybody with some pull in a good corporation's IT department may also chime in and offer some of your bandwidth. If I had it, I'd be the first to step up, but I'm no longer a corporate type.

I'll PM with some other ideas.

I concur. Supply and demand is at the heart of capitalism.

Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD
Time
Nah. Believe it or not, the eyebrows always crawled up my last nerve. I sat there and thought to myself every time "Wouldn't a man who had all the hair burned off his body have no eyebrows too?" I actually liked this change. But, the cool thing is, anybody can take the edit I've done and build on it, making it their own. The restoration of that bit will probably be a little harder, as there will need to be more color matching in the scene. But if you replace the entire scene en toto with something that's been matched closely, it will likely be unnoticable to the rank amateur (like me).

Am I the only one who prefers the old ewok music?
Time
Though I prefer the new ending to Yub Nub, I didn't hate Yub Nub, as I didn't hate the Ewoks (I'm in a real minority there). On the 1997 release, John Williams had a nice commentary on writing new music and I'm glad the he wrote this portion. He did not write Jedi Rocks in the Jabba sequence, which is another reason to hate that song. It is so friggin out of place because it was by a totally different composer. I do remember finding Yub Nub a cheesy ending, even in the days before the SE, so I was not upset that it was changed. Of course, I'm upset that it hasn't been preserved in an offical O-OT DVD and on the special edition soundtrack. Pick up the Anthology Boxed Set CD if you can find a copy.

Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD

Here's to hoping I don't get fried to a crisp. I hope to be clear that this is a special edition re-edit. Not the O-OT. Maybe we need to create a new thread under the SE vs OT section. My intent with this thread has strayed somewhat, but my original intent is still there: To encourage the posting of completed clips that can be re-inserted into the official DVD. Technically, I've only done one of those which is on this disc. I suppose if the entire torrent were downloaded, demuxed, and the relevant video segment of Shaw-as-Anakin's-Ghost reinserted, then we're back on topic. But dagnabbit, I've had fun with this project whatever the case. I hope you all love Lapti Nek, which is almost as far from OT preservation as Jedi Rocks itself.

Until Lucas dies and his kids inherit the empire from him and release the unmolested OT in HD-DataCrystal or whatver format is all the rage in 20 years, we should do our best to institute the "Pay it forward" system. That is, receive a copy, pass it on threefold. As schmaltzy as that movie (Pay It Forward) was, it's a GREAT system for distributing stuff like this. The more ubiquitous DVD recorders become (not writers, standalone recorders) the easier it will be for the less-computer-savvy to adopt the technology and join the revolution.

I hope with all the copies of BOTF that I've given away that they'll all get paid forward.

Did anyone else find Ian McDiarmid to be ineffectual as the Emperor?
Time
I think it's much simpler. In Ep IV, Vader is pretty mechanical and Obi-Wan is pretty old. Quite simply, they just don't move like they used to. Luke hasn't been training his whole life like he would in the good ol' days of the Jedi Order, so he's actually more on par with these geezers. He does advance tremendously between IV and V, doing his own somersaults and backflips in the latter.

Still, the whole notion that you had to be trained from age 0 was asinine. I'm just good at rationalizing the minutae for the better enjoyment of the saga.

edit: I'm actually watching ESB right now thru Pinnacle. Pinnacle's preview option reverses the reds and the blues (why, I don't know). But I'm at the lightsaber duel and it's freaking me out. Vader's saber is blue, Lukes is red. Plus, all of the bluish lighting is now red, so it looks like a Tarantino flick. Totally bizarre.

Letter to LFL about DVD Defects (No OT vs SE discussion)
Time
Sessler, sorry I missed your post way-back-when. I believe the music mixing issues are still present in the 2.0 track. However, these do fall under the creative decision category and would be tough to legally force a change.

My real reason for posting in this thread today is to go off on a tangent ... I'm a huge fan of the band Rush and subscribe to their newsletter. The following arrived in my inbox today. It's relevance: It is refreshing when an artist takes enough pride in their work that they'd go the extra mile to do right by a fan when a bad printing is circulated. If only Lucasfilm would be so bold and yet so humble at the same time:

A MESSAGE FROM NEIL PEART REGARDING THE MASKED RIDER

To anyone who bought a copy of The Masked Rider in Milwaukee on the 30th Anniversary Tour.

"A new trade paperback edition of my first book, The Masked Rider, was put on sale for the first time at the Marcus Amphitheatre in Milwaukee on June 7th, 2004. After the show, when I had a chance to look over the book carefully, I realized it had been produced with serious flaws (no photos, wrong maps, various typographical and design errors, missing portions of text). I immediately stopped its sale and had the rest of the printing destroyed, but I feel bad for the unfortunate few who bought copies that night. A corrected second edition has now been produced and put on sale, and I would like to replace those first defective paperbacks with an autographed hardcover copy of the proper new second edition.
Please send your defective copy to the address below, and we will make it right."

With apologies,
Neil Peart

To further my recommendation for an "ignore" function ... in all fairness to all users and to what's being said, I think the "ignore" can have two subfunctions (were it to be programmed in the first place).

1) Ignore user (this thread only)
2) Ignore user (all threads)

I came up with this notion based on the idea that it can keep posts on topic without outright banning certain people. After all, users may wish to ignore me in MVerta's thread after the silliness I posted there. But some users may still find value in what I say elsewhere. Or, maybe there's somebody out there who finds me obnoxious enough to ignore altogether. I hope not in both cases, but everybody's a pain to somebody. Point is, the ignore user could be implemented two ways if it were so programmed and may thus be much more useful and less censoring than just the one, outright ignore all feature.

Again, just trying to provide a constructive solution. Jay, you may PM me if it's a programming/resource issue. On the whole I'm a crappy programmer, but I have a host of genius programmers who work for me, at least one of whom is an OT devotee. If I can't hack it together, I hopefully can find somebody who can.

Call me Harry Potter, as I am not afraid to name he-who-must-not-be-named. Jimbo's posts were never as venomous as DanielB's. Jimbo was kicked off for far-lesser transgressions. But DanielB is an OT purist whereas Jimbo was so far up Lucas' cornhole that he lauded every stupid decision Lucas ever made. Even though this is OriginalTrilogy.com, that, to me is no excuse. Knowing plenty of people like both of these guys has thickened my skin over the years. They love the sound of their own voices, or in this case, the look of their own words on-screen. They love to be the sand in the vaseline. They get off on getting a rise out of others. If we all ignore trolls like this, we can at least take some satisfaction in frustrating them even more than the subject does. But I'm wise enough not to think that ignoring them will make them go away entirely. It may give them a set of blueballs, but they'll keep trolling until they can gratify themselves. To switch metaphors midstream, better to remove the cancer than to expect it to go away.

StarWarsLegacy.com - The Official Thread

*sigh* and my joke at the top of this goes unheeded. I tried to add some much-needed levity to this thread but it was undercut by more venom. People, stop taking the bait. If only the board had an "ignore" function we could turn off all posts from unruly members on an individual basis.

Mike, you keep doing what you're doing. I get the motivation. Even if we never see it, I've appreciated all the information in this thread and on your site.

.: The X0 Project Discussion Thread :. (* unfinished project *)
Time
Good lord, I swear off the board for six hours and look what happens. In the interest of finding a silver lining, I think the greatest good out of all this is that it is now made quite clear to all on this board that DanielB and Daniel, who once even shared the same avatar, are not the same person (unless its a Jekyll/Hyde kinda thing).

I am pained that the X0 project is dead. I was looking forward to it not just on its own merits, but knowing that it would become the source for so many other cool projects going on. I only read this thread yesterday -- in its entirety -- and was jazzed about the project and the new source for all forthcoming restoration projects. I was looking forward to this truly un-f'ed with OT as much as I was MBJ and Zions restorative projects. MVerta's project, which we're never going to see, has nonetheless inspired me to make my own reduced SE that I can tolerate, and his postings have helped to be a guide, along with some of Grisan's previously posted work.

What I've read so far this morning shows some of the most venomous bile ever seen on this board. I didn't think that was possible after the last meltdown, but here we go again, and the same user is largely the source of it all once again.

Never since Germany in the 1930s have we heard somebody so passionate about purism that he felt all voices who deviated from that should be either silenced or sent elsewhere. If you call me a capitalist, I'll call you a Nazi in return. Both labels will be appropriate. The offshoots of OT purism are still a part of the ongoing conversation on this board and are highly appropriate to the subject matter. As one who has been hosting a similar forum (on an entirely different subject) for a decade, I can tell you that the community grows when the conversation is not stifled. I can also tell you that sometimes the conversation DOES need to be quelled, but usually when a disruptive member needs to be disciplined. As a result, my forum has built a true community who has get togethers, input from the subject about whom we discuss, and we bond together in the face of personal tragedies.

Back to this board, this thread, and its current state: For all the apologies given in the latter posts, it does not take back what was said in venomous hate in the first place. Rikter has rightfully asked us in the past to contain our language because youngsters do visit this board too. I've asked us not to take the bait provided by the god of dischord and I emplore that once again. Mind you all, everybody has a right to their anger when it produces results such as these, and all I can say is to take it out in PM -- or in another method altogether. Working out at the gym is fairly constructive. If we put half as much energy into improving ourselves (not to mention our particular visions of an ideal OT) then we'd be better people, happier with what life has provided us. When you wish to impose your anger on the collective audience, ask yourself, What Would Yoda Do?

I hope to end the ranting with this important thought: Does one, single person along the coast of the Indian Ocean care right now whether or not the OT has been restored at all? Does anybody in Iraq care about any changes in Star Wars or E.T. or my son's birthday videos? Does anybody in East Timor feel like debating till the wee hours of the morning on PAL vs NTSC formatted source material? Let's put some things back into perspective folks. The world is full of real pain right now, but we all are here out of a labor of love. If Star Wars, in any format, gives us some collective enjoyment and entertains us in new and exciting ways, why must anyone resort to tearing down anybody else for taking part?
