...Mistake !

There might be a confusion: The 7FN LP's transfers have been called "Pure Versions" because they haven' been remasterised at all. I didn' t touch anything. I just share them because 7FN had a low connection to make it himself.

7FN has produced very well balanced transfers and he is the only one to be mentionned for this work ! (Of course, your Ipod doesn't care).

My only touch is about the covers. ;)

When I transferred to the iPod, I called it "ABC's Remastered ESB", etc... For the LPs, it's "ABC's & 7FN's RSO ESB Remasters" or something like that. Just wanted to keep it simple. For the artist, I used London Symphony Orchestra.

Ah ! Then, it's now time for your review :) ! lol !

... I just asked the question to know how people will be able to find them and to know what it is. Not obvious to call them a simple thing like "remasters", because the SE's are yet meant to be remasters.

One little question? Why do the tracks get chopped up into so many separate parts in these re-masterings? Don't get me wrong. I love the work you've done. It's just that the flow in some of the music is broken and would be better served if joined together. I guess it's just the way the original tracks were recorded during the scoring sessions.

The flow shouldn't be broken (- ok perhaps a tiny little "tilt" sometimes -) if you respected the 0'sec. pause tracks (on the infos.txt).

Now to the point: when clarity began to come back I noticed all the differences of sound, and so, of recordings. Even if some looks to be the continuity of a track, they're different. I needed them separate to deal with them in a different way each... And if you take CD1, track 3 on RotJ, I should have separate "Death Star In Array" wich sounds a medium quality, with the "Tatooine Rendez-Vous" part wich sounds very good.

All the tracks on RotJ that are separated with fades, from the Emperor room to what happens on Endor really are different recordings with different sound. Yes I know: hard to hear on the SE's ! :p However, I agree I could edit some tracks to be joined together... But I'm working with very "roots" materials and software, and it's finally fine to me that way.

On ESB for exemple I wanted to keep "Departure of Boba Fett" as a 8min track (with "Luke Pursues The Captives"), but here again, I had to work the track alone, a bit for remastering, and mostly to flip the inverted stereo... Indeed, that was quite bothering on this one and I always thought this track had a strange relief (due to that). Btw, it's the only flipped track I corrected.

Anyway, be sure nothing is hasardous on these separations.

:) ... And thanks a lot for these feedbacks. I was wondering if the new changes on RotJ would be so obvious. :) Now I'm happy this work meets sensitive people.

... Like I said, my re-awakening to these soundtracks might be altering how different they seem to sound to my ears but if these versions can make me feel like I used to when I first starting listening to them, then that's the best I can say about them.

Bravo.

This is a beautiful compliment to what has been intented here! Thanks! :)

... And I think you're right: it's a real (and new) discovery.

_______________

ABOT ROTJ final version, just would I like to say I haven't edited my track by track report, but now a little bunch of cues (the best ones) from CD2 are now perfect to my hears. Anyway the experience will talk better than words.

A lot of things have been called back indeed. But it's a mess that the violins (a lot where still hidding) have a so low volume, they seem to be far. In the other hand they have a beautiful sound and it's quite amazing to hear them appear where there was nothing before but a far melted echo. A lot of other strange instruments are hearable, besides, and quite clearly. All this give a strange feeling of large space. :) It really makes the score richer and... Complete. THAT is a complete score ! Lol !!!

Just a couple of tiny retakes and they're yours :)

RETURN OF THE JEDI - FINAL VERSION

I did so much on the first version that there were a lot of things remaining I didn't dare to do or didn't consider in detail. These two last days, like a painter, I took my finest brushes and placed the deepest shadows and the final highlights. Indeed there was still a little place for clarity here and there, quite some space to carve between the most percussive frequencies (basses-mediums precisely) and the extreme low freqs to finish the un-muffling work: some hidden instruments we just guessed behind on most tracks have now a more obvious presence by revealing this space.

All this seems to have given a better dynamic to the whole set and reveals more again this (finally) very fine William's score. I'm beginning to like this one a lot !

It would be too difficult to say or remember all that I've done, but here's a little idea to what those of you who listened to the first version may notice.

... And yes it'll be available very soon.

DISC 1

1. 20TH CENTURY FOX FANFARE  0:22
2. MAIN TITLE / APPROACHING THE DEATHSTAR  5:22   A blasting "PERFECT"
3.
TATOOINE RENDEZ-VOUS  2:50   Just a bit better. About the best as may be this corrupted track
4. JABBA'S PALACE ENTRANCE  1:10   Untouched (I did all I could the first time)

20. SPEEDER BIKE CHASE  1:21   Still a few better. Almost perfect ?
21-22. LAND OF THE EWOKS  8:16   21: As good as it can be (I think). 22: Clearer, a bit.

Edited post:  I' ve listen it three times and I have no more doubts that what I just made is now the ultimate ROTJ version feasible with that score. Consider what you had from me as a pre-remaster. However I will wait a couple of days to announce it definitively with bold letters and a trumpet blow. Lol !

Sounds good, ABC. :) Thanks for the news.

Thanks to you. Your comments helped to check this out.

If it's as better as I think, and I'm about to think it is, I will try to send it to every people who requested the links (Ouch, big work)... Unless I share only with those who left a feedback or bumped the thread, that would be fair !

By the way Ripplin, can't wait to read your full review ! Hehe !

I didn't even care about the crackling on the LP transfers because I was so drawn in by the music.

A funny thing with my Hi-fi material is that the LPs transfers are better with headphones, while I think  the remasters are better on speakers. Off course all depend on your own material. :)

Well, I think is, even for myself. I have now a version of the CD 2 with quite almost the same new powerful and clear sound on tracks 3, 5 to 14, 17 to the end. Track 4 is good, track 1, 2 & 16 are always hissy, and track 15 will always be a flat shit. All have been widened a bit again with only EQ, as usual. I'll keep in touch.

Also, I see now that you have LUKE'S NOCTURNAL VISITOR twice on CD1, it was the second half of THE TRAINING OF A JEDI KNIGHT on the Anthology.

Indeed... The guy's right ! I tought the second one a little reminiscent... Here's why ! So, that's a little mistake.

Ripplin said:

... it's a shame that the original recording quality is so much worse overall than the other two. I have no idea why, either. Do you?!

I suggest you go on GoodMusician topic and fill the search field with "Return Jedi transfer"... I'm sure you'll find more than a clue.

... What I can say is that mostly RotJ but the two others scores too are full of different mixing or transfer qualities as if each track had been considered isolately. I only heard such things on some "complete scores" stuff or recording sessions sometimes. RotJ has 51 tracks, that makes almost 51 different settings. I say "almost" because I sometime recognized I had to make the same settings on a group of different tracks, dispatched here and there (a little the same for ESB).

To notice the RSO ESB album is not "perfect" neither from this point of view and if I had to make a remaster I would class them into at least 2, even 3 groups, to deal with them before I could make their sound fit together. Another thing weird is that the RSO ESB has a different relief for the orchestra than the Anthology, but in the same time they have the same particularities (lack of flexibility, mostly in the highs frequencies which seem to have been recorded too strong for most of the tracks: small saturation; and wich also are a little narrow).

I think these differences may first depend on the recording dates (you have them on the backcover and they are quite numerous). Perhaps they tried to give different tempers to the music. I don't know, I just guess.

... From my point of view, it is what gives a certain richness to these scores too and I'm quite happy they didn' t try to turn these to the "perfect sound" fashionable standarization for CD's... Mostly the Sony one !

But you said it, RotJ remains a poor recording... For a most part.
