See, that's far too washed out.

Oh, sorry. I think I lacked of clarity, then I will elaborate:

The one my post displays hasn't the right colors at this state, but it is uncorrupted enough to correct the colours what really makes it a great base. There's too much saturation on your colours (added to the fact they are wrong), what will make a hard work to get these back.

It's your choice if you're happy with the 1st picture that comes at hand, but if you take the time it needs to create a cover, you may take the time it needs to find the best picture available. And I assure you it is worth for the pleasure it gives to work with such material.

I could post a bunch of links here, but the time it would take for me to find these again is the same time it requires from you to find these by yourself... That's just part of the work. ;)

Now if you want better references...

The 1st one is about 2000 x 3000 pixels (Leia alone is about 900 pixels high!) and is a good reference for both colours and contratsts. It is definitely the version I'd work with but I think I remember I have even better.

The 2nd one is around 1500 x 2100 and is a nice reference if you want to give some warmth and depth to the first one. It's also a good reference for what is to be avoided with saturation and contrasts.

Now, just take a look at your cover again...

Anyway, D_J has made something exeptionnal with his set as it seems, so perhaps he deserves the best from the minor art that consists in making a good cover...

PS: That said, I think the one above is definitely the more "Classical" cover you can have for such a restoration, and only I would add with discretion above the poster the mention that it is the original theatrical version. No more, no less.

* Unknown missing track *

Did nobody ever noticed there's an unknown bit of music on the 1980 mix, during the conversation when Chewie has brought back 3PO in pieces ?

It's a kind of suspens cue on two notes (harp? oboe?...) + a third note appearing (violin or cello). I thought it was some background SFXs for the doors or the lifts but no. It even accelerates when they all go out with Lando and fades on the next cue.

The best way *imho* is to have the original posters with credits then, like the one I posted two posts back. The white look for the rest looks great, but I'd personnaly abandon the gold colors.

Maybe I can help in the future. I've been through too much computer problems recently and haven't reinstalled photoshop yet. I still have it on an older computer which has unfortunately only a couple of fonts installed. Besides the arts for the IE will have to wait because of this, unless I uses only the old arial fonts...

In the wait, just to let you know I have the highest resolution pictures that have been foundable over the net (there're not anymore) for the original posters. I won't share those though, cause I'm a selfish person ! lol ! Only for your covers if life allows me. ;)

... (edit)... Though this is maybe not what D_J is looking for.

I see... Perhaps you should find a place (a topic) to sum up all this to present it the right way then. Maybe a feedback thread considering the current one is mostly for help and technical discussion. Just a thought. Cause as you can see I had no idea of what are your projects. lol

I know I may have sounded like an ass to a bunch of people around (and even to myself!) pushing a little pressure for feedbacks, but it's the only way to let people know what's in the box when the preservation forum is such a mash of diverted projects, and I have no regret to have done things that way to let any one knows "this" has been done. ;)

Anyway, bravo, and maybe I'll download your projects one of these days if I'm patient enough with the downloads (3 days last time I did with J Downloader for one DVD!).

D_J, though we're working together on the IE, I don't know a damn thing on your GOUT versions. Why are they so appreciated (seems) ? What are the improvements (noise, contrasts, colours ?) ? What else ?...

All that I understood is that you work with other mixes, and made the GOUT theatrical...

I Thought it was the right place to ask.

If anyone is interested I can post a couple of audio samples of some sequences with synchronized unused music over the film mix. I espacially think about the 1st duel between Luke and Vader (before "Departure") - when I'll be at this point - , cause the creepy music really makes a surpising rendition of the sequence...

I hate to tell you A B C but you've been thinking that these are the tru colours from a very faded/ desaturated photograph. Here is the original photograph taken from the behind the magic CDROM:

You hate to tell me ?... Well, you shouldn't! :)

I'm not upset when I'm wrong and I'm glad of your demonstration of authenticity here, notably when you have not the least obligation towards "us". However we'd agree the contrasts are very close between these shots, not as dark as on your reconstruction.

... I'll add here for myself that a shot coming from a commercial CD-Rom will surely have been "restored" by the staff, so not the most authentic reference. Same thing for the remixed musics from "Star Wars a Musical Journey", if you allow me to transpose the matter in the area I've been on this site for. I would definitely go for a middle way between these two shots in the end.

It's in your hands anyway, and I wish you all the courage you can get! I have no doubts the thousand words that have been spent here will be pointless to anyone who will witness your restoration.

... maybe ABC might have some ideas.

... Btw, I shouldn't say that now as I'm not sure about this yet, but it is possible I take care about painting the art myself, if I succeed in matching the spirit of this 1980 masterpiece... And I mean with real brushes, not digital ones.

For the presentation I'll use the original titles JW gave to the cues for the recording sessions, as I'll give their recording tapes and cue numbers as I have them now (You know, the famous 1m1, 1m2 ect...), and I'll also mention what as been edited, and the new mixings. I'll probaby rehandle the essential from the liner notes from the AE for the backcover, or even for a 2-sheet inside folder.

You'll understand then, after how far I've been able to dive into / and restore this music that I'd rather present it the way I feel it has to be myself.

And even with the Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls characters brought to life as 2D hand drawn animated cartoons set against actual filmed landscapes, Dexter's Odyssey would still be one of, if not, the most ambitious film projects the world should ever see since James Cameron's Avatar and Peter Jackson's the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Timbox... I'm... so... amazed !

Perhaps should you consider not telling us too much aboout this. I'm glad you do, but it would be unfair that you give undirectly by posting on the internet some ideas to the 20th Century Fox or Warner.

The most effective projects and actions are the ones that are leaded under silence. ;)

The Empire Strikes Back "Imperial Edition" Music DVD

If you don't mind... This is one job is reserved :)  I had in mind to present the arts directly in the original OP besides.

would really like to have some artwork for these since these will probably be my last Star Wars DVD projects, unless ABC and I do music DVD's for the other 2.

I think we're just ending this adventure together with the current one. ;)

I don't like new version of this shot:

In new version duel is getting lost in lights of the tunnel. Old version is better in this. Background in original is more dark for good of duel visibility. I think it's not good to fix background. I'm getting lost in all that lights of new version

I have to admit something is right in what Coconut says.

The blue filter on the left is sure awful, but the "pristine" contrasts + the sharpness look "too much" (for me) on the right.

This was the scene I liked the less in the - awesome though - theatrical reconstruction of Adywan. I had to close my eyes a half for it stopped hurting (and I don't really exagerate). I found the extremes lights/darks too proeminent.

What does this mean?

It was a general statement, not personaly orientated. Nothing bad. The other thing it means is that I see the SE "Ommmhh" like an improvement (for once!).

Aaaarrhh expresses something that hurts. The "ooommmhhh" is more contained and expresses better an effort - the one he makes to collect his force when he takes the foot stroke. It also *imho* fits totally to a character who's such as he won't allow himself to show any weakness going through.

... You have the "Aaaaarrrhh" after, on the core bridge, when he takes the lighsaber stroke on his shoulder. There, it really hurts!

Possible the 1st "Aaaarrrhh" from the '80 mix was lifted and transformed from the 2nd besides (unless it is the contrary)... It should be checked out.

Back on topic: I agree that Vader's scream should be put back to its original form.

I'm currently working over the 1980 mix and noticed the "Arrrhhhh" sounds like if Vader had no mask. It even almost sounds like a Ben Burt tinkering with sound.

Not only the "ommhhh" from the special edition sounds like Vader through his mask, but in addition you really recognize James Earl Jones voice what is not the case of the old one.

I think your use to return to the original sources (which I have myself) may alter your judgement about this.

Thanks a lot D_J,

It's turning very good and it confirms all my expectations for synchronization... And I mean both good and bad ones (so few), cause if I could have had half a second as a small margin for editing for the 1st half of the unused part of the "Wampa's Lair" track, it would have been even better.

As told by pm it's revealing and I think the great interest of all this is gonna increase the more we'll go through the film until the end. I also definitely love to see the film black and white, when all the colours come from the music.

I'm not willing to congratulate ourselves but thank you for doing this ! ;)

... And bravo to John Williams.

Dear C3PX,

Too much words kill the words, mostly when they fall in a blocked ear. Your effort for clarification here is sure valuable to my eyes, but the transformation of every ideas and feelings you will share here makes it rather worthless and painful.

The essential has been said and is once again burried into kilometers of quotes and useless details.
