Yoda and Palpatine NEVER should have been given lightsabers. — Page 2

I disagree in part.

Someone had to train Darth Maul. That kind of makes it implicit that Palpatine would have a lightsaber and know how to use it. Him having it while he might be a target for Jedi makes perfect sense. It is for defense if attacked. He proves in both battles that he prefers to use the raw power of the dark side.

Yoda trains younglings in the early use of the lightsaber. That means he was once an expert in its use. His method of fighting fits with his size, though not with his age. But I think when you consider what he might have been in his younger days, everything makes sense. What we are seeing in ATOC and ROTS are his last battles, first with his former apprentice and then with the most powerful Sith any Jedi has encounterd for 1000 years. I’m not saying the battles themselves were the best choice, but both characters having lightsabers and being expert in their use fits with their backstory. Even in the OT it makes sense. Palpatine has eliminated the Jedi and has Vader to hunt down any strays they learn of. Yoda is in excile and has more to teach Luke than saber skills. Neither of them has need of their lightsabers at that point.

or this could be further evidence that the Sith idea was slightly flawed. It certainly does change the way the Emperor is viewed in the OT. It is a shame, as i agree that the idea that he doesn’t use or care about lightsabers is more threatening.

This is something I never considered. It would seem that constructing a lightsaber, even if it is a weapon, would be an exercise in patience and precision, not qualities that the Sith would have much interest in. Now I imagine the Jedi trying to evade a Sith warrior who is using some sort of disintegration blaster, which is as effective at melting through objects as the lightsaber but is a ranged weapon. This in addition to telekinesis and the occasional energy bolt would be a very effective offense.

I like to think of lightsabers not as highly specialized Jedi weapons, but simply as being outdated, like real swords. They were once used by every army, but when blasters and other ranged weapons emerged, they stopped being used and were more like ceremonial weapons. Jedi Knights kept using them out of tradition and because their enhanced reaction made them still effective against modern blasters.
I think Palpatine should rely entirely on the Force to fight his opponents. I also don’t see how Maul necessarily needs to be trained in lightsaber combat by Palpatine, that’s a skill he could have picked up anywhere else. Neither Obi-Wan nor Yoda are shown to teach Luke about lightsaber duel techniques.

If Palpatine ever had to face someone wielding a lightsabr I always imagined he’d do something similar to what he did in Dark Empire;

The elderly Palpatine with a lightsaber just seems weird to me. The fight with Mace in ROTS, even when I watched it at age 13, just seemed silly and weird. An actual duel seemed to me to be below him,and not necessary. I always imagined his Dark side powers to be far beyond the need for a duel. The same goes for Yoda.

(I’m actually kind of amused by Lucas’ claims that he wished to go back to more artsy films, especially when athefight between Palpatine and Yoda was a golden opportunity to get weird and abstract with the Force. A “Force Battle” in my mind should be a more aggressive version of the Dagobah cave scene in ESB.
This is another thing that I liked about Dark Empire; it made the Force into an interesting and very abstract weapon. Yes it did resort to a Palpatine vs Luke duel, but it made Palpatine younger, thereby knocking him down to Luke’s level. When Palpatine was old, and even when he was young, he would use the Force in some pretty creative and crazy ways.)

I don’t have much to say regarding the matter, but here’s my opinion:

Yoda and Palpatine are the top-class Force users. Their power is so strong that lightsabers are sort of a cop-out. It’s like giving a top-class pianist a toy piano.

I’d say it’s more like giving a top class pianist one of these:

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

I always was feel that Yoda having lightsaber lightsabers in PT was good, because it’s a younger Yoda, and after his in Ep 3 defeat and into goes hiding he realizes was do one not great make. But it handle poor.

And 85 is younger than 105. No one at either of those ages is likely to get down on the floor and start break dancing.

My mental image of this is quite funny.

I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to disagree with you guys on the issue with Palpatine’s lightsaber. Although it does seem weird that he would need one, I think it really adds to his character and makes him more menacing. When you look at him, you would think that he is a feeble old man that does not have much skill in combat, but then he takes out his lightsaber and it suddenly makes him seem like a much bigger threat. Yoda follows the mindset of not using his powers for attack, but Palpatine seems like the kind of person who would do the opposite. There are many situations I could imagine him using his saber, especially when he gets confronted by Mace Windu and the other Jedi.

With Yoda on the other hand, I totally agree with you.

Indeed, very menacing.
