The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 685

See, but still mentioning “where the last war ended” kind of defeats the purpose of changing the inscription to feel more ancient.

You could have it where right as Babu goes “Hey-aye!” after 3PO delivers the message, the room immediately shakes and they go check to see what it is, leaving no time for comment. You could even add Poe saying off-screen “Useless…” as he walks up to 3PO as Rey goes upstairs.

Then, when they’re running in the streets, you could cut the “move your metal ass” bit and have Poe say something about trying to get dagger, or splitting up to get it. Or just having one of them saying it when they’re on the Star Destroyer. Cut the brief scene of them shooting all of the cameras and Rey saying they need the dagger and Poe asking why.

Finally, when Finn and Rey are working on the Falcon after they escape, this is where you can reinsert Finn’s line off screen, “Endor? Where the last war ended?” This tells the audience that Rey has told the others about what she heard from the dagger in Kylo’s chambers.

You could change the inscription from “where the last war ended” to “where countless fell in battle” or something generic like that. That way it’s possible the journey starts at a different site for everybody depending on the point in time - it just requires a lot of residual death in the area.

I always hated the 'where the last war ended" line because it’s just wrong lol. The Battle of Jakku was seen in-universe as the decisive battle of the civil war.

Finn could always be forgiven for saying such a thing, but for the inscription itself, yeah, it just doesn’t work.

Yeah, I don’t there’s a way around the GPS coordinates aspect of the dagger. And that’s okay. I’d wager that sampling 3PO’s Sith-eye voice would yield an AI voice capable of carrying a modified phrase or two though.

Just some sort of clue wedged in there that it guides its Force-sensitive bearer based on the dark side somehow.

And I like that new 3PO line idea! “I do believe I am some sort of… spy.” Perfect.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Is there maybe a way to imply that the inscriptions are everchanging? So if the wayfinder moves, the inscription changes?

I am of the perhaps unpopular opinion that the goonies moment where she uses the dagger to find Palpatine’s tower actually worked in the original, and its absence is noticeable here. If I did a version of this edit, that moment wouldn’t be removed.

Honestly? Same here. In fact there’s a couple of moments from the film that I remember some fans getting upset about and that have been subsequently been removed in fan edits that didn’t really bother me despite how goofy or nonsensical they were (i.e. “They fly now!”, light speed skipping)

“Where the Emperor fell… quite literally”

[Somewhat joking but I do think we could have it be something in regards to the Emperor’s supposed death]

I don’t hate it, but I also am not crazy about it. Which is why I’m fine with what Ascendant does.

Hmmm. Is there a specific part of the movie that makes it clear it’s ancient and wasn’t forged in its entirety by Ochi relatively recently?

It’s just that when I watched Ascendant for the first time a few weeks ago the goonies moment with the dagger wasn’t there and I just assumed that I hadn’t been paying attention and missed it. So I definitely think that if a newcomer watched that having seen the original film they may be confused about its absence as well.

It does seem like the dagger would have been made recently by Ochi, doesn’t it? It may be easier to find one moment to state that somewhere rather than change several moments to make the blade seem older.

If the blade was made, say, fifteen years ago, then it would even make sense to keep the goonies moment in.

JEDIT: Maybe we can change the dialoge from this:

“There’s writing on it.”

“Perhaps I can translate.”

“The location of the wayfinder has been inscribed upon this dagger. It’s the clue master Luke was looking for.”

“And? Where’s the wayfinder?”

“I’m afraid I cannot tell you.”

to something like this:

“There’s writing on it.”

“Perhaps I can translate.”

“Why, this blade was forged sixteen years ago…by Ochi of Bestoon. And look! Inscriptions concerning a Sith Wayfinder.”

“And? Where’s the wayfinder?”

“I’m afraid I cannot tell you.”

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

But why would he create a dagger with a shape resembling the death star wreck?

So we can have a Goonies moment. I’m sure it was a visual JJ realized would be cool regardless of logic.

I’m sure @JarJar’s AI line would sound better though.

Also, is it worth revisiting the line used to replace “Rey’s first mission” now that more emotion can be added to the lines? The “very important mission” line does sound a little flat in its current form.

JJ/Terrio were saying in the documentary that they wanted an object the Sith cultists would pass to one another to guide them to Exegol. The problem is that the dagger doesn’t point them to Exegol, it only points them to the wayfinder - which can only be in one place at once. The stupid concept here is that these cultists are returning the wayfinder to the Death Star wreckage every time they come back and that Rey didn’t enter that room to find it empty - as in all likelihood it ought to be.

The Goonies moment makes zero sense and I really hope it doesn’t return in this edit. The way it’s currently implemented is fine, although I’m not opposed to further changes to make it work better.

@Octorox, I highly agree.

There is some time for an unmasked Kylo AI line to be added right after Rey falls and drops the Wayfinder and Kylo picks it up. This time could be used to help sell the idea of her using her inner darkness with the blade to reveal the path to the Wayfinder.

Kylo: “Embracing the darkness…

Rey ignites her lightsaber…

Kylo: That’s the only way the dagger tells. Look at yourself. You wanted to prove to my mother that you were a Jedi but you proved something else. You can’t go back to her now, like I can’t."

Rey: “Give it to me.

Kylo: “The dark side… is in our nature. Surrender to it.

Rey: “Give it… to me.

Kylo: “The only way you’re getting to Exegol… is with me.

Rey: “NoOoOo!

I like that idea DZ, I think the blade idea needs more lines and such like that to sell the idea more.

This might be a hard sell but Hal would you possibly consider offering 3D versions to go along with your quality edits as every time I want to watch the 3D versions and pop in the disc I’m always reminded how bad those theatricals are.

That’s gonna have to be a “no,” although if you wanted to rip the 3D discs and recreate the edits’ video stream, you could. I don’t know if there’s a way to contrive a 3D effect for modified shots.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Since you seem like you want to steer clear of Nev’s restructure to Leia’s death for this edit, I was wondering if you might be interested in taking a second look at Leia saying “Come home” to Ben? I recently got a pretty good take of it which is more loving instead of longing. I also applied an echo to so I’ll provide both for you to listen to:

Quick suggestion, Nev’s Starlight edit of TFA gives Rey Sith eyes when she overpowers Kylo. I wonder if maybe something similar could be done in one of her “near the darkness” scenes in this movie. Maybe when she uses force lightning, or stabs Kylo. It could also be fitting when she’s about to kill Palpatine, only to fade when she sense Ben.

I like you, let us burn things together.

Author
Time

Burbin did the eyes for her flashbacks so for consistency’s sake he might have to do it again - if willing to. I agree that the best two places would be during the Sith lightning and stabbing Kylo. I don’t think the other moment would work well mostly because she is acting so scared in that moment, not angry.

I have to say as someone who actually quite liked the sequel trilogy I think this edit (especially the Rey Nobody version) is really great and I cannot wait for the newest version. TROS very much feels like the weakest in the trilogy and while I still enjoyed it there are things in it that I’m not fond of and this edit addresses a lot of them. I do have to say though that I really wish that there was an alternate version that included the lightspeed skipping sequence. As much as I’m sure that angers a lot of people, I find that scene to be pretty entertaining.
