The BB8 one, not so much.

The reason they have Finn give the thumbs up so prominently is so that it’s obvious that BB-8 is mimicking it.

I just find the idea that “LOL IT’S A MIDDLE FINGER” is dumb.

I know. I posted it because I was surprised that someone actually pictured it that way.

Tip: Hard to tell that if you don’t comment. Otherwise it looks like you’re saying “HAHAHAHAHAHA SO FUNNY.”

Sorry, I should have clarified. I should stare at that Ric-Pic a little longer so I don’t miss anything else.

Love the inclusion of the Mcquarrie trooper, he’s even got his standard issue riot shield and flas- er… lightsaber.

As much as I love the early Marvel SW comics, I never could (or can) get over just how silly-looking the little Luke icon in the top-corner of the comic covers were.

(Just look how buff he is. He looks more like a blond Conan the Barbarian with a lightsaber, as opposed to Luke Skywalker, farm-boy from Tatooine.)

And it undermines Luke being buff in ESB which was a physical example of his progression.

The funny thing is that the post-ESB icon showed a much thinner Luke.
(In all fairness though it was quite movie accurate.)

It was the 70’s. It was Marvel comics. Marvel did have a Conan comic at the time. I think Roy Thomas and some others worked on the Conan book.

And it’s not like there’s an official movie poster anywhere that makes Luke into some buff dude with a sexy Leia at his knee. 😉

Weird depictions of Luke actually abound in early poster concepts. I think this one only appeared in the Art Of Star Wars book.

But unlike the Marvel icon, at least none of these show Luke standing around floating in a vacuum.

IIRC, they switched to using the droids for a while, then Han and Chewie, and then finally a group shot of our heroes?

I didn’t know Star Wars was originally gonna star Don Knotts!

Sure, but at least the Jung and Hildebrant posters gave Luke a face that resembled Mark Hamill. I just can’t shake that feeling that I’m seeing Conan in that first Marvel icon.
But of course, at this point they were doing a comic adaptation of a film that no one thought wold do particularly well, so they just added their standard Marvel-superhero flair to it.
I do really like it, I just also think it’s really funny and weird looking (but that’s part of the charm of those early SW comics).

Wow, that Polish one is so ugly. I mean it’s more Star wars-y than some of the other weird ones they made, but what is up with Luke’s face?
(Also you say he isn’t floating in a vacuum, true, but in this one he’s floating on a cloud, which I find really funny for some reason.)

However, while on the subject matter of funny-looking foreign SW posters; I’ve always liked this Italian one which actually kind of reminds me of a comic cover;

And this one is also really interesting to me (it’s so fascinating to see how people just had no clue what SW was back in '77);

This one is definitely back to Conan-Luke territory. Even Han looks a bit Conan-esque, his face is also pretty much identical to Luke. And Chewie is just straight up a gorilla.
Although it’s credited to an artist named John Solie, it looks like what I imagine a Frank Frazetta SW poster would have looked like.

Wow, you have a good memory.
There was also two more of just Luke, and one with Leia.

Second Luke icon
Third Luke icon

I think a lot of foreign posters were done without benefit of having seen the actual movie, not just Star Wars.

As George is apparently a long time Frazetta fan, I’m surprised he never commissioned Star Wars art from him. Frazetta did do some paintings for Battlestar Galactica that were using in advertising and some novel covers.

Well, ^that put’s the debate to rest. George clearly had Luke and Leia as sibling Skywalkers from the beginning.
Alec’s floating head in the detention hallway has me cracking up!

If only Obi Wan’s ghost manifested as a giant floating head. 😉

Interestingly enough. Boris Vallejo, (who I often got confused with Frazetta as a kid) did do some posters that were a Coca Cola promo thing for Burger Chef which I missed out on, as I’ve never seen a Burger Chef in my life.

And Boris has returned to Star Wars again in recent years. 😉

I’m sure Leia’s outfit has a logical explanation.

Yep! And those were used on the Burger King glasses too. I still have those little beauties stashed away. Need to figure out a safe way to display them. Not sure why I never got the posters back then, maybe BK ran out?

And boy, did they get Chewie’s age wrong, not to mention misspelling Wookiee. 😉

My theory is she fell into a giant spider web before this point and had to cut herself free. Unfortunately, she didn’t have a second change of clothes on hand at the time, so she had to make due with the tattered rags she had left over.
