The Best Fan Edits Ever?

Author
Time

So, Ive been away from Star Wars for a long time. So long that my original login for this website, which I only used once, to post one “help me” type comment, is so old and ancient that it is beyond any password I ever remember using. (I tried the password reset, never got any e-mails. And I checked my spam. And the contact us didn’t work. THIS USERNAME IS FINE)

Anyways, I would like to get back into Star Wars a bit, and was looking for a newish way to experience it. I have the AManDigital fan edits on DVD over on a shelf, which I got over 10 years ago and never did watch, and I thought about giving those a go. However, Ive heard really great things about a newer set of edits by somebody named HAL9000, and generally I was wondering about other peoples thoughts about the best way to experience the Original Trilogy. I know its subjective and YMMV, but that’s okay, I’m pretty open to anything and would love to hear people’s thoughts. I actually don’t have a huge preference between Special Edition and Non. But by god I don’t wanna see Hayden Christensen at the end of Return of the Jedi or hear anything but that dumb Ewok song.

Ide also like to give the prequels a go, and I know HAL9000 did highly regarded cuts of those…
But well, I think the prequels work best if they are kept, uh… brief? So I’m looking for the best 3 movie supercut of the prequels all together as one movie. I know there’s a few of those.
I saw three that stood out to me. “Before the Dark Times”, “Downfall of The Old Republic”, and “Shadows of the Old Republic.”

Ide also be open to one of the supercuts of The Clone Wars animated movie and series as one big movie if there’s any that people are really fond of.

Again, just looking for thoughts and opinions. Please, share yours.

Adywan’s Star Wars Revisited project is generally seen as the pinnacle of Original Trilogy fanediting, though ROTJ is still in production.

Hal9000’s Prequel trilogy edits are also seen a definitive, though there are many other prequel edits that cut them down even more if that’s what you’re after.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Oh yeah, like I said, for the prequels I’m looking for something that compresses all three prequel movies into one. But for the Original Trilogy I want 3 actual movies, and that’s where HAL9000 initially came to my attention.

There are two main schools of thought for the Original Trilogy: Those seeking absolute purity of the original releases, and those seeking modern polish.

For the latter, as Nev has mentioned, you’ve got Adywan’s Star Wars Revisited, which are “the special editions as they should have been”. They’re an absolutely meticulous and painstaking depth of polish.

For the former, you have Harmy’s Despecialised editions, which seek to present a restored version of the movies which you could have reasonably seen in the cinema in 1977. And you also have the 4K series (4K77, 4K80, 4K83 for each of the three OT movies) which seek to present that original vibe carefully upscaled to 4K.

I can’t much speak to prequel trilogy three-in-ones, other than (and due to) a personal belief that you’d always lose something that way, and that there is value in the prequels when a layer of polish is applied, and that supplemental prequel content like Tales of the Jedi and Clone Wars are also valuable both on their own and to recently released content.

As for the sequels, there’s an excellent loose-but-related trilogy comprising TFA Starlight, TLJ Rekindled, and TROS Ascendent, which many hold up as the pinnacle of sequel tightening. TROS Ascendant is probably the single fan edit which gives you the most value-add compared to the original movie, and has been a spectacular multi-disciplinary collaboration.

Others are generally more of a matter of personal taste, but there’s a variety of great TV-to-movie edits of recent Disney TV content, of various lengths based on how much you want to preserve. They’re generally in the first few pages here.

You owe it to yourself to watch ANH and ESB ‘Revisited’ by Adywan at least once.

I had a hand in each of these, in disclosure, but I’d recommend these three edits for the sequel trilogy:

The Force Awakens: Starlight
The Last Jedi: Rekindled
The Rise Of Skywalker: Ascendant

I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

Hello again Hal 9000! I don’t know if Ill ever watch the sequel trilogy, Im kinda of going out of my way to ignore everything that happened post Disney, and stick to the old EU, but if I ever do give them a try, I can promise you those will be the ones I watch.

You probably meant to say “Rekindled” because that edit you mentioned is a much more radical one.

Honestly I’d give those sequel edits a serious try. And you’d probably enjoy moviefied versions of some of the Disney stuff. If you’re game, I bet this community would love to hear the opinions of a first-time viewer who hasn’t even seen the original versions! You’re the “hypothetical first-time viewer” that we often edit for…!

Thanks; fixed it. Embarrassing mistake.

PixelJoker’s upcoming Kenobi edit might join the pantheon of greatest edits, we’ll see. Could also be too ambitious for its own good, but I hope not.

In my experience, ambitious ideas are only a bad thing if the editor doesn’t have the technical skills to actually pull them off. I’ve seen so many “radical prequel edits” that aimed to recast Anakin and replace all the special effects and other insane stuff, and they all crashed and burned because the editor had no idea how to actually do any of the stuff they were promising. PixelJoker doesn’t seem like that type, though: he’s clearly an insanely skilled VFX artist of the Adywan mold, and I have no doubt his edit will be released eventually (although it might take years).

It really depends on how radically he changes the story, for me at least. If he’s changed like 25-30% of it, I’d say there’s a good chance of it being super good. But if more than half the story is completely changed he’s gonna have a seriously difficult time using the available footage to weave that new narrative in a convincing way. My suspension of disbelief might be shattered if there’s just too much trying to be reconfigured.

For prequals I still go to an edit which is now over 10 years old and nothing still comes close to it, its called
StankPac’s Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith Special Edition:

here I treat Revenge of the Sith like when a new hope can out ie the previous numbered movies are not needed, want to watch clone wars go watch the animated show, want to watch a kid darth vader talk about space angels and do pod racing, neither do I 😅.

“We Are What They Grow Beyond” - Yoda

My Prefered Saga Viewing Preference:
Ep. III - Revenge of the Sith Special Edition (StankPac Edit) * Rogue One - A Star Wars Story (Hal 9000 Edit)
Ep. IV - A New Hope D+77 (OohTeeDee Edit) * Ep. V - Empire Strikes Back D+80 (OohTeeDee Edit)
Ep. VI - Return of The Jedi OTD83 (OohTeeDee Edit) * Ep. VII - The Force Awakens Restructured (Hal 9000 Edit)
Ep. VIII - The Last Jedi Legendary (Hal 9000 Edit) * Ep. IX - The Rise of Skywalker Ascendant (Hal 9000 Edit)

i would like a fanedit of the original versions of the original trilogy and i mean the versions that were released on vhs and aired on tv not the theatricall versions that restores deleted scenes and replaced puppet yoda and puppet jabba with AI jabba and AI yoda and i wish lucas did replaced puppet yoda and puppet jabba from rotj with cgi yoda and cgi jabba and made cgi jabba in rotj look like how he looks like in a new hope because it looks weird for younger fans who watches the movies seeing how different yoda looks like in the original trilogy and how diferent jabba looks like in rotj after seeing him in a new hope and of course i want that fanedit to do what adywan´s did with the emperor look in his esb fanedit

This does not exist, you will not find it.

I wish Lucas did replaced puppet Yoda and puppet Jabba from ROTJ with CGI Yoda and CGI Jabba, and made CGI Jabba in ROTJ look like how he looks like in ANH, because it looks weird for younger fans who watch the movies seeing how different Yoda looks like in the Original Trilogy, and how diferent Jabba looks like in ROTJ, after seeing him in ANH. Of course I want that fanedit to do what Adywan did with the Emperor in his ESB fanedit.

Had to rewrite and decode this mess of a post to even understand what the first half meant.

Basically boils down to;

  • Wants an edit using the 80s home video masters of the films (for some reason)
  • Wants all deleted scenes back in
  • Wants Yoda replaced with CGI or AI (to match what he looks like in the prequels I think?)
  • Wants Jabba replaced with CGI or AI (to match what he looks like in the 97SE)

Any takers? Sounds like a simple task clearly.
