And yes, I agree that late 20th-century films did aging makeups much better than today’s movies. Strange.

I wonder if it has something to do with the old studio system dissolving, and the makeup masters of those respective studios retiring, and possibly not training the next generation? Some of those guys may have taken their techniques to the grave.

As a make-up effects enthusiast, I can confirm that some did. There were some cases of understudies, but a lot of the early masters took their secrets to the grave.

Your line of thinking is probably the most accurate, but wouldn’t the change in film resolution, as well as any number of tiny variables like lighting and lenses also affect the ability to pass off make-up as reality? I am sure our HD generation is part of the issue when it comes to believable makeup.

I’ve seen plenty of old movies in perfect HD and the make-ups stand strong.
But, I don’t think the drop in modern quality is due from the old masters dying with their secrets, I was just confirming Wooks suspicions on that subject.
It’s important to remember that not all old old-age make-ups were successful, nor are all modern attempts failures.

Or he could be the guy chasing after those who stole the Death Star plans, who ultimately screws up, and Vader is called in? We’ll know by December. 😉

"He [is] responsible for protecting the security of the Death Star project

You’re probably right. It seems like his job is to defend/protect the DS, while Tarkin is the guy in charge of it.
And Vader will probably only show up towards the end of the film after Krennic has either died or it becomes apparent that he’s lost control over the situation.
(There’s a shot of Krennic on Scarif pulling out his blaster as he approaches a battlefield, seemingly in some last ditch effort to salvage the situation. Judging from the trailers it seems that Scarif will be the location of the final battle over the DS plans. The footage evens shows Jyn holding a package which most likely is the data-tapes for the DS. I have a feeling that Vader will appear after this scene, where probably Krennic and most of the rebels will die. Also the Vader shot from the trailer shown at SW celebration, from what I’ve read and seen on cellphone recordings, seems to be of him on a Star Destroyer bridge. This is probably the same as the opening of ANH.)

Did anyone took a look at the new Rogue-One-cinema-poster?

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cnamfi0XgAAgOd4.jpg

From a photoshop point of view this is a mess!
It seems like it was stiched together from some production- and some cgi-pictures.
For me (i work with photoshop for the automoblie industry every day) i cant even look at it.
The sunlight comes from different angles. The sizes of the people are not correect to each other. The palm tree leafs on the left are bending by the wind to the left, on the right they bend to the right. The explosion makes no sense and the death star is way wayyyyyyyy to big. A 160 klimoter wide death star you can see this close is a second away from crashing into your planet.

“A rebellion built on nope”

“LUKE… I’M SEEING HIM.
HE’S COMMANDING THE IMPERIAL FORCES… LIKE OUR FATHER!
I FEAR WE LOST HIM, HAN… I FEAR WE LOST EVERYTHING.”

The palms blowing opposite directions makes a nice division between the Rebels and Empire.
There’s nothing wrong with the explosion. There’s a battle going on. That could be from almost anything.
The Death Star (obviously) isn’t mean to represent actual size here. This is an effect used in advertising all the time. We aren’t meant to think this is a still from the movie.
If ya don’t like it, there’s nothin’ wrong with that. But from a design standpoint, it’s just fine.

I’d venture a guess that this probably isn’t a theatrical poster. As they’ve done in the past, this is likely going to stay an exclusive that they handed out to attendees at the convention.

Anyway… 😉

i’ve found a nice little detail. First i thought the death star in this poster is a cgi, but it isnt. I have a little kids book, the “24 page read along, Star Wars, A new Hope from the year 1979”. And in this book there is a picture. And on this picture you can see the death star on the Rogue One poster!

Here is a picture of it. bad quality but i think you can see that it is exactly the same picture used for the Rogue One poster.

Edit:

i did a scan of the picture and a photoshop combination.

Scan

Combination

fits perfectly

“LUKE… I’M SEEING HIM.
HE’S COMMANDING THE IMPERIAL FORCES… LIKE OUR FATHER!
I FEAR WE LOST HIM, HAN… I FEAR WE LOST EVERYTHING.”

Back to the Future 2 proves that point. They had three different makeup artists do the old age makeup and they had differing degrees of success.

I’m not sure where they got this, but I found this at http://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/ and it was simply labelled; “Rogue One Planet Jedha”

They look like some form of priests, and they are on the planet Jedha which has been confirmed to be a pilgrimage for believers in the Force, but they look kind of sinister as well as walking alongside an Imperial officer, so doubt that they are good guys. Maybe we will get to see some Dark Side worshipers in RO? I haven’t been paying too much attention to the new canon, but do the general public in the SW universe know that the Empire is being run by a Sith lord?

Nobody expects the Imperial Inquistion! Our chief weapon is surprise…surprise and fear…fear and surprise… our two weapons are fear and surprise…and ruthless efficiency… Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency…and an almost fanatical devotion to the Emperor… Our four…no… amongst our weapons… amongst our weaponry…are such elements as fear, surprise… I’ll come in again.

Before we get too far away from all the poster talk, I wanted to note that a Celebration recap video on the official Star Wars site is referring to it as a teaser poster. Everyone already thought as much anyway, but now we have it from official channels as well.

Nice find, Dark_Empire! Very cool!

Thx. It`s the little things 😉

Normally i am always complaining about the new Star Wars things, but in this case i like that they use an old picture. It is a nice little connection between EP4 an RO for me.

Edrio Two Tubes is a mercenary pilot who flies alongside his eggmate, Benthic. I know it’s a cropped pic, but I really like the way that shot of the red ‘priests’ is framed, with the camera positioned close to the foreground troopers.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the potential weird and wonderful characters this whole ‘marketplace’ setting might offer.

http://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2016/07/more-details-on-the-two-aliens-bistan-and-pao-from-rogue-one.html

Some new info about “Space Monkey”;

His real name: Bistan. He’s the gunner on a new starship known as the U-Wing, a sort of gunship and troop transport. “It’s not necessarily a character that we get to know, but I think he has a very memorable, iconic look,” said Edwards. “[He’s] one of my favorites. I can’t give away what happens to him.”

“Bigmouth,” whose real name is Pao, a soldier who serves as a kind of platoon leader, coordinating the charge into battle. “There was this great design of this creature that’s mouth would open really wide, and he looked like he was really good at giving orders and shouting at people during a battle,” Edwards said. “I was like, ‘We’ve got to give him that moment in the film,’ and so [Pao] was born out of that.”
