Missed notes or glaring mistakes weren’t the problem for me. It was the lack of a transcendent voice. There were just no “wow, damn that girl can sing” moments that are really needed to carry a musical. It was just all auto-tuned, robotic monotony.

I agree that this rendition by Emma Thompson was fine. Not as good as Angela Lansbury’s, but still fine on its own.

Nothing can surpass the original. It’s just too damn good.

^ Having seen the movie as well, I’ll chime in to say: No, not really. It’s a theme as old as dirt. Charming movie, but you know what you’re getting into and it doesn’t add any twist or surprises. But, again, fun and full of charm.

I think a lot of things fall under the umbrella of “dated.” The question is to what degree it matters. Some of the hair styles in Star Wars are dated but that ultimately doesn’t really affect much and certainly doesn’t make the film as a whole any less timeless.

I actually just watched The Quiet Man for the first time, and a lot of it is a product of its time and a product of the time it’s set in - the characters in general have a lot of different attitudes than we do currently and that’s okay because that’s the time it’s depicting. But a few moments are more definitely “dated.” In particular, the scene in which John Wayne forcibly and carelessly drags Maureen O’Hara for miles is played in the films for laughs and we aren’t supposed to think any less of Wayne’s character for it. But, watching it now, it’s just pretty fucked up, honestly and not very funny or endearing in the least bit.

During our roadtrip through Ireland, we stopped at the Quiet Man bridge, where the scene was shot. It was a lovely location, and after that I made a point to watch the film. I didn’t care for it. It’s too much a film of its time to resonate with a filthy millennial like me.

On the other hand…
Kong: Skull Island

A delightful monster fest. As my girlfriend said: ‘It was everything I expected it to be - and a little bit more’.

I was distracted by Citizen Cane so I missed the rest. What’s wrong with trying to quantify how much you liked or disliked something? I could say I liked ANH and ROTJ but that doesn’t mean I enjoy one way more than the other.

It would probably be clear based on what you say about your feelings towards each movie which one you liked better.

Finally got to watch this in 1080p with wonderful English subs last night. Third time watching.
It’s so great. It’s so much more than I had even hoped it would be while I was following it’s development. It won 7 academy awards and deserved every single one-

Best Film Editing
Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction
Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography
Outstanding Achievement in Sound Recording
Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction
As I said to Fo earlier, I’m really hoping we get a good English dub. I’m a subtitles fan, but the dialog in this film is so layered, fast and abundant that it’s really a bit exhausting trying to keep up!

Boyhood -
It was pretty good, but I thought that it would have been better if it had moved through the years more fluidly. At times it felt like it was a collection of disjointed scenes. I liked it a lot, especially the first half, but it wasn’t quite as good as a lot of people said it was.

EDIT: Just to be clear, I love RLM, but they have a large subset of their fanbase that will parrot every single thing that they say as though it is 100% fact. It isn’t RLM’s fault, but it’s something that I can’t stand about its fanbase.
