I think this version of Rogue One is exactly what I’d want, but I think reinserting Andor’s introduction would be better at this point. I understand the idea of starting the story off through Jyn’s eyes, but Cassian’s first scenes were sorely missed.

I think this is the move, yeah. The edit as it stands is streamlined more or less as beautifully as the film can be, considering what Gilroy was working with and just the nature/focus of the narrative of the story. But Cassian’s intro to that story is a must-have now. Before that last episode aired I was still under the thinking that the whole show was essentially a series-length embellishment/replacement for that Kafrene intro, which was as nice a shorthand you could ask for the Bond-esque rogue setup (A Luthen-trained hero if there ever was one, as it turns out) in a single scene. But that last episode makes such a big deal about Tivik calling, the opposition to believing the info (even bringing back Jebel and Pamlo), and how Draven and Mon are sticking their neck out to send him out there to meet him

I do believe that scene’s gotta go back now. It’s not just his intro anymore, it’s literally validation of Luthen’s death (and his tactics, LOL. Poor Tivik). Other than that, I think this cut is structurally pretty sound.

I agree with those calling to reinstate the Andor/Tivik scene.

I’d also argue the following:

• I think it’s now worth reinstating Cassian’s instructions from Draven to kill Galen Erso. As you argued originally, it was to keep the audience in Jyn’s perspective and related to her line on trust. But in retrospect now we’re coming from the Andor show, I think its inclusion adds more value, by adding more tension to their mission earlier, given that the Andor we know is off to do something perfectly reasonable given the context but that will put him in conflict with our newly introduced focal/vital character.
• I’d remove the scene of Jyn climbing up out of the records vault and having to dodge a slicing door that’s for some reason on a weird open-shut timer. I don’t think it adds any legitimate threat, and only comes off as a bit goofy tonally.

Another small tweak to consider…

• Remove Baze calling Jyn “little sister”

He’s known her like a day at most, that moment has always come across as odd and trying to forcefully add more of a family-type vibe to the group that just isn’t there.

The briefest of Andor spoilers in this:

I know we’re all talking about keeping this edit relatively the same as it was before we saw Andor, but I can’t help the idea I saw somewhere and have thought about. Essentially, remove almost ALL of the scenes with Darth Vader. Keep him until the absolute very end when he turns on the lightsaber in the (gratuitous) hallway scene. Include the mentions of him from Krennic and whatnot, but don’t let us see the major Emperor/Vader players until absolutely necessary.

Andor was a brilliant, slow build-up of the tiny characters who snowball the story to where it ends up in the OT. All of the mentions of The Emperor in Andor, but not actually showing him, really impressed me. These people are so small to Palpy/Vader, I’d love to see that continue into Rogue One now, particularly with Darth Vader. So yeah, now Rogue One could keep the mentions of how Vader is reacting to what’s going on from Krennic, show Tarkin for the first time in this arc, but save actually seeing Vader til the end to cap off the whole Andor/Rogue One storyline arc. Vader finally getting physically involved at the very end, I feel, could add even more of a punch to everything the show and this movie were building up to. Highlighting that the Rebels actually getting those Death Star plans is the first time where the Empire’s highest in command cannot choose to ignore these Rebels any longer.

Been a while since I’ve seen Rogue One, so maybe this can’t work, but just a thought I’ve had. Could maybe see the downsides, such as a lack of belittling of Krennic from Vader… but he gets that from Tarkin.

Perhaps this would be better suited for a totally different edit, but I wanted to shoot this idea out.

Agreed on trimming “little sister”, I thought that too. Baze and Chirrut were only lightly developed characters in what was an ensemble movie, but as a continuation of Andor they’re arguably even more minor, and the implication that this relationship has any meat to it is more distracting than cute.

I’d keep the Vader content though, Andor’s now transitioning towards the Original Trilogy so more Tarkin and Vader I think is important at this point for continuity flow.

Poor Hal is going to have so much feedback to catch up on when he returns to this thread that he’s going to need go remove the “a half-assed version of DigMod’s” from the title 😂

Mon suggests Galen will testify to the Senate, but given the events of Andor, what’s the point of this?
