Are There Any Visually Striking Moments in the PT?

Discuss. Are there any moments that made you go "wow" in the way George wanted? There's a lot of spectacle in the PT that fails, but - at least I think - there are a few moments and images here and there that work. Where is there any world building that you liked? Interesting character designs? Scenery that was more than just a generic, panning establishment shot?

TPM

-The city of Theed. Sure, we don't see a lot of it. But what we do see of the palace is pretty ... uhm, big. I enjoyed the look of the city and the palace; it's probably the only thing that stands out in this movie design-wise. Probably helps that a lot of the stuff here came from models.
-Speaking of Naboo, I was pretty impressed by those first few invasion scenes on the prairie.

AOTC
-I don't like the way the clones were handled especially... but the closing scene of this movie wherein the army is being assembled and sent off. Wow. Maybe it was the Imperial March, I dunno. But, I really felt a sense of grandeur here that much of it was missing. THIS would have made a much more striking introduction to the clone army than seeing them on Camino. If that were ever possible in some way in a fanedit, I would definitely support it.

ROTS
-I got nothing. I've seen this movie twice and that was once too many times. I'm not a fan of blockbuster action films, and that's all this is - with soap opera camerawork to boot! This does a lot of that awful stuff I referred to in the opening paragraph.

I welcome debate on my claims, as well as those of others, but let's keep this from being a complete PT bashing thread.

I liked the shot of Palpatine with burnt Anakin on Mustafar.

Quite iconic. IMO.

I like the moment in AOTC when the Federation ship is brought down and the Clone Troopers are fighting in the dust cloud. Looks great.

Agreed.

The opening shots of Ep III as seen at midnight in the cinema at the first screening were second only to seeing the opening shots of Star Wars in the cinema back in 1977.

In my opinion, the opening shots of the other 4 films are not as good.....

visually striking... yes i'd admit the Pod Race was. aurally striking too

only thing in AOTC i can think of are the viewpoints from within the clone shuttles when you see other ships blowing up and going down (usually with a live actor somewhere in the shot)

i've always liked the opening of ROTS, at least before Hayden & Ewan begin bantering back and forth. that opening scene kinda put the battle in ROTJ to shame. of course the impact of this battle is completely lost when they get back to Coruscant and it's business as usual.

The reveal of the battle at the beginning of ROTS was jaw dropping for the right reasons.

I also loved Coruscant in the mist at the beginning of AOTC.

^See, I disagree with the ROTS space battle stuff. If I recall it was just more of the annoying follow-this-ship pans that we got in ESB's Special Edition. I wasn't really a fan of it in that context ,and I wasn't in the space battle either... though I must admit it made more sense.

Surprised to see so much love for the battle at the beginning of ROTS. To me, it just looks like the intro to a video game with live (although wooden) actors in some shots spitting out dialog that doesn't mean anything to anyone. As RLM pointed out in their review, there too much crap on the screen. It's just a big mess of ships and explosions everywhere and I dunno who the good guys or bad guys are because they changes ship designs between each movie. But that really doesn't matter, because we soon find out that it was just a flashy opening scene with no barring on the rest of the movie. sigh.

I did think the Naboo city looked great. Except that there were no people anywhere. It's like a ghost town. Too much fighting on the dance floor I guess.

The Palpatine opera scene and the one where Anakin points the lightsaber at Palpatine's head and he goes "I can feel your anger" seemed very striking to me.

I was referring to the very opening of the Coruscant battle.

We see a few ships in relative quiet.

We follow a couple of fighters over the edge and suddenly plummet into a full on space battle.

Sure the whole sequence has problems (buzz droids, cut and paste dialogue, comedy vulture droid sounds etc) but that opening is very striking.

It may look like a lot of video game cut sequences, I don't play many modern games so I wouldn't know but I guess those games came after the film.

I watched ATOC and ROTS on my Sony 4K home projector------and every goddam frame looks striking!

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

Though the actual fight is kind of lame, and I absolutely hate the movie as a whole, the scene with Obi-Wan and Jango fighting in the rain on Kamino was one of the most visually pleasing scenes in the PT, to me. Something about rain splashing on sci-fi body armor... I guess fights in the rain are kind of cliche, but for some reason people keep putting them in books and movies, and for some reason they stir some instinct inside me every time.

Mos Espa in TPM was great. We got to see our favorite desert planet for a second time in ROTJ, but only the vacant desert. Seeing a familiar place so nicely reproduced and so true to the original Star Wars felt a bit like going home, in a way. Of course, when we returned to the planet again in AOTC, I started feeling a bit sick of the place.

And Naboo in TPM was gorgeous through and through. That was one of the things the prequels did well, created this new planet that felt tangible, like a real place you could imagine yourself visiting. From the open grassy fields, to the palace, the the hanger bays, the fighters, and the reactor core. Even the underwater city was pretty looking and an exciting concept (though a bit silly in its context, and home to an unredeemibly annoying and unbelievable stupid race of aliens). I wish we had gotten something similar by visiting the Mon Calamari home world in a much better version of the PT.

Nothing in ROTS was worthwhile visually beyond the opening space battle, I loved the fighters with their ion engines zipping through the fight. Unfortunately, my enjoyment of the entire film ended mere moments later when CG clone pilots and buzz droids made an abrupt appearance. (I agree with RLM, there is too much crap on the screen, it is a horrible scene, but for those first few seconds before all that crap shows up that scene has you thinking, Wow, finally the PT is giving us a scene with a real space battle! For a few second that opening almost made you think you might be in for something exciting along the lines of the battle at the end of ROTJ. The Death Star trench run. The snow speeders on Hoth. The battle over Endor. Those were such fun and exciting scenes. The PT never even tried to come close to anything like that, except for those very first few short lived seconds of ROTS).

Grrrrrr, talk of the PT is depressing! There was so much potential there!

Dan you must be easy to startle :-D

LOL!---I guess so!

Having said that I have run Taxi Driver(which was sampled from a 4k master) and Close Encounters of the third Kind Blu ray discs through the internal sony 4k upscale algorithm(called reality creation) and the grain density in both these 2 films is very heavy to the point of distraction(it is definitely not digital noise------you can see the grain increase on any shot with optical effects---wipes/dissolves ect)

Film does have it's limitations.

On the other hand---Avatar and ROTS(and the other prequels) look amazing-----the images are as clean as a whistle.

I always considered myself a film/analogue man-----but maybe I am coming round to Lucas's(and Cameron's) "digital is best" way of thinking.

And a snip at £16,192.85 or £19,200 going by this here article.

I could extend the Chateau to a size large enough to accommodate a 32 inch television for that :-D

You wouldn't happen to be gloating about the OUT not being available in some high quality modern medium, would you?

Because that would be pretty trollish of you, if that is what you were doing.
