And I’m going to be honest, I literally never noticed the two colors that appeared as Rey was igniting her lightsaber. Would be cool to change it to blue and purple though!

Starting the scene in dark represents Rey’s loss of hope. Seeing the ship burn and seeing it reflect on her face, she has lost all hope.
When Luke lifts the X Wing and we see the sun rise and shine, it signifies the hope rising in her again.
YES! I’m super excited that the “lightsaber cutting out” effects are going to be included - I’ve been in love with the concept since I first saw MR’s tests.
Jar Jar is right, the way Daisy Ridley seems to be reacting, it’s almost like the shot was made for the saber to die.
To get around the lighting issue when Rey is standing, maybe it shoots a shower of sparks out as it flickers? The sparks would serve as the source of the light that’s in the scene, and Rey would then shake her hand as if the sparks have burned her. That also ties in with the idea that the lightsaber is unstable - it’s not just about to die, it’s about to explode. Violently. (Like Rey.)
Definitely agree that sound will be massively important for the effect to land.

Hey MR! Just click the Panner in the clips “Effect Controls” like in the image above. In the example I set the panner to go from 0 at the first keyframe to -80 at the second keyframe.
Love all the new work, and that color correction on Ahch-To is beautiful. So much more atmospheric and thematic.
I’m confused on the sparking part. It makes sense to me to add it sparking out after Palpatine’s death, implying that she buries the sabers because that event destroyed them, but why would it spark out too during the duel with Kylo? Wouldn’t that imply it breaks there and then it would somehow be fixed off-screen for the Exegol scene?

Also, Rey’s saber lights are green and blue, referencing presumably Luke and Leia’s sabers but not that she used their crystals. Having green and purple would retain this nod for this edit. I’d prefer that over blue and purple.
MR, do you plan to add Rey’s saber crapping out on her at the end of the DSII duel? If so, that seems like a natural buildup to this moment. Also, have you done an audio component to this change?

Well now I’m just confused what you want Hal, lol. Ultimately I agree though that it would save a lot of time and effort to simply incorporate MR’s latest work and forget about the whole DSII ordeal.

Counterpoint - Rey never sees Luke’s green saber and unless she heard stories about it’s color somewhere she would only know his blue one, the one she is obsessed with ‘earning’ throughout the film.

I still feel like Rey’s reaction to her lightsaber at that one point in the fight is simply too perfect to pass up. Would you be using that clip you sent plus other the other adjustments that were suggested?
The only thing Rey knows of the green is it trying to murder Kylo. Hero Luke accept the blue saber, not the green.

I think a subtle flicker/distortion to signify wear and tear of this old saber would be best for DSII moment thats already been discussed; if not there maybe another place in the film once or twice, don’t think it should fully shut off or do a full on spark out. I like the idea of the Saber’s breaking after Palpatine confrontation though.

Agree with no spark out on DSII, That should only happen after the battle. I’m trying to build suspense after Rey’s Saber switches off when she flips and then she struggles to turn it back on as Kylo draws closer.

^ Yes, I just meant that the saber shouldn’t appear to totally break for good during the DSII duel. I think a subtler approach should do the trick: Rey noticed it fizzling as she looks down at it, another shot from above of it, and she cowers as the saber is out of frame. Viola!
Also, it need only be a nod to the audience without having an in-universe correlate about the color of the two lights on Rey’s yellow saber. She knows the myth of Luke Skywalker anyway, so I think green and purple is the best Luke-Leia homage possible. I imagine it’s slightly better thematically that she buries the broken sabers of the past and builds her own anew anyway.
That’s what I think would actually be powerful about burying the sabers, though. They are blue and purple, and in the next shot the saber activates with a flash of two colors - it seems odd that it would be anything but those colors if that message is to ‘read’, at least to me.
Also: YES I KNOW LUKE’S SABER IS GREEN AND I AGREE IT STANDS FOR HIS CHARACTER BUT IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE SENSE FOR THIS STUPID SCENE IN THIS STUPID MOVIE BECAUSE SHE ONLY HAS HIS BLUE ONE AND IT BREAKS EVERYTHING BUT WHATEVER I DON’T ACTUALLY CARE.

Isn’t the canon answer that Luke’s green lightsaber ended up with the caretakers? Funny to think about.
I want to lob two musical changes out to the group for consideration: when Luke lifts the X-Wing, what if we carry through the Rise of Skywalker Theme (which is already playing when Rey pulls the Wayfinder from Kylo’s ship) instead of transitioning to Yoda’s Theme? I get what they’re going for (namely: extremely obvious, hit-you-over-the-head-with-a-mace parallels), but…ehhh. Besides, even ignoring the Yoda disconnect, the Rise of Skywalker Theme is the key theme for this entire movie; and with the new coloring, this is the key scene for the film as well. There’s a lot of significance to pairing the two, instead of…Yoda’s Theme. I think the scene would have a lot more power and carry a lot more weight if we allow it to stand on its own, rather than distracting the audience with, “Hey! Yoda’s Theme!”
The other moment is in the Reunion scene at the end. Why is Luke & Leia’s Theme playing? Where are Luke and Leia? Get that s*** outta there. I was thinking it might be nice to play some of Rose’s Theme, as she sort of represents “The Heart of the Resistance.” Or the Rise of Skywalker Theme again.

I get where you’re coming from to a certain extent, but 2 changes in this project include music from the prequels (3PO and R2 theme, ROTS Palpatine as he drains dyad). It would be a shame IMO to not include such an iconic piece from the originals. Even if you remove the music, the scene is still an overt reference to Yoda. You can’t undo that. For me, I really enjoy the music there. It shows how far Luke Skywalker has come; he has taken the place of Yoda.
