I feel like Jahns looks at Rotten Tomatoes and bases his review on that, unless it’s a long-awaited superhero movie that people are defending if it got bad reviews.

Even aside from his review content/opinions, I find his voice really annoying to listen to.

Suicide Squad 7/10

Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed this film but it is NOT flawless. Here are my quick thoughts:

  • The first 20 minutes were edited very poorly, many scenes that should have been way longer ended up being chopped to shit while other scenes were way too long

  • The tone was all over the place

  • The reshoots were really obvious

  • There were many things cut from the movie that either felt missing or ended up in the trailer

  • The villain was really lame

  • Joker was really good but he was very underused

  • The soundtrack was really fun but more action scenes should have stuck with the random mix rather than generic action music

  • Deadshot and Harley Quinn were great and the rest of the squad was good except for generic-sword-wielding-girl who made no difference to anything

  • The flashbacks were all too choppy and short. Batman’s cameo was awkward and so was Flash’s.

Overall I enjoyed the hell out of it but it wasn’t great. The performances and dialogue in act 2 were really good but act 1 and 3 were edited poorly and had way too much cut out. Hopefully we’ll see a bunch of deleted scenes for someone to go in and fanedit in as well as some trailer footage to cram in there.

I agree with pretty much every point you’ve made.

That sounds like a heck of a lot of flaws for a seven out of ten movie.

STAR TREK: BEYOND

They wanted Fast and Furious and they certainly got it.

The characters and cast were great. A solid story with some good humor. The homages and nods to the past movies and shows came fast and thick and were well integrated. I thought Pegg and friend did a great job with the script. The visuals and CG environments were outstanding. The CG really works for Trek. I suppose all the past plywood, Styrofoam and cloth demands at least some slight bit of unreality.

On the whole, it worked, but there were some serious problems, all linked to the overarching problem of the dizzying pacing.

(Just to be safe) SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Here, now there, now off to the next thing. Just not enough time to develope some important plot points. It created some missed opportunities. The villain was a great concept and might have been a more powerful twist if the video had been viewed a couple more times throughout the movie with some more hints and suggestion of mutagenic compounds and expo of the alien race and weapons. kirk is frustrated with having to deal with these alien ways to the point of wanting a desk job. His decision to turn back for Jayla might have been more powerful with some more earlier pauses and impatience. I know it is a ST trope that they quickly concoct fantastical solutions with the limited resources at hand. Overall, the greatest problem with pace was the problem-suggestion-decision-implementation cycle seemed like it was less than 20 seconds. I was still trying to grasp a vague idea of what they were doing and they would almost have it solved. A few seconds more to ponder, protest, drop expo and prepare would have been helpful and had greater credibility.

END SPOILERS

While the pacing was more a hurt than help on the whole, it was, nonetheless, a significant help. It created a sense of…exuberance and abandon. Certainly plenty of energy. Pace and villain developement aside, it seemed well directed. For the future, maybe dial back a little from 09 and STID instead of warp 57.

This movie occupies a space with others like Thor:TDW with it’s odd logistics and unclear motivations. An odd feeling that I should be more annoyed with it than I am.

“Yeah, sure, why not? That was a fun run with some likable characters and cool environments.”

I like these new films and was glad to have another.

Jeremy Jahns rarely gives a less than stellar review to long awaited superhero movies.

I don’t remember Jeremy giving MoS and BvS stellar reviews…just saying

Also, how do you guys feel about Chris Stuckmann? I find him to be a much better reviewer.

EDIT:

After looking at some pictures of the cast all lined up, I think that Killer Croc was cast poorly. The actor who played him, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, just wasn’t imposing enough. He’s only 6’2, I’m the same height as him. I think they should’ve cast someone bigger, like Shaq or something. Look how short he is!

We should have gotten something like this…

I find his reviews far better and he goes in depth far more, but I think he’s way too generous on films. Like, he’ll be bringing up heaps of flaws and then give the film a B+ or something.

Doesn’t really count as a movie, but I showed my dad the War Of The Stars ANH edit not too long ago. He got a lot laughs out of it to say the least.

I think a lot of the issues he brings up are small. And with certain films you may like certain aspects of the films so much that it makes the issues you have seem trivial. I like The Dark Knight Rises quite a bit but with the flaws I see in the film I should probably rate it at a 7.5/10 even though I rate it a solid 8/10

I have no idea why I skipped it in lue of watching the 2nd installment.

I hate Chris Stuckman too. I just hate that style. Neither he or that Jeremy guy have given me any reason to respect their opinions and have given me plenty of reasons to ignore them. Those guys irritate the hell out of me. Luckily, it’s easy to just not watch.
OH, and that other guy who always has his mouth hanging open in his thumbnails. Can’t remember his name, but I don’t like him either.

JEDIT- Got names mixed up. Chris Stuckman is the guy who always has his mouth hanging open. He’s not as irritating as Jeremy.
I can’t find the guy who I originally mixed for Chris…

I’m pretty sure you and him have similar opinions about the things that you like…Also what style are you referring to? Discussing a film’s plot and then talking about what you like and dislike about it?

EDIT:

What reviewers do you actually like? And you can’t use Ebert…

EDIT 2:

Can you give a description of some of his mannerisms or any distinguishing behaviors and/or accents of this guy you can’t remember?

By style I mean Jeremy’s constant chop and edit. He can’t go more than four words without a hard cut.
Then again, I’ve only see a few of his reviews. Maybe he don’t do that no more. I’m sure his personality is still grating though.
JEDIT- Just saw the thumbnail for his Suicide Squad review. Looks as annoying a douchey as ever. Maybe more.
But, meh. Diff’rent strokes fer diff’rent folks.

What makes you think that? Do you mean Chris or Jeremy? It’s possible either way.

I love Half in the Bag. Entertaining, informative, honest and well thought out reviews.
I really don’t watch many reviews because I don’t watch many modern movies. I watch RedLetterMedia no matter what they’re covering though. It’s always entertaining. The other reviews I watch are mostly covering older horror and sci-fi films. For that I turn to MONSTROSITIES volg, Kaijucast, ect.
I’ve also started using letterboxd.com. It’s a great site full of reviews. Many good ones from our own Neglify and one of my own!

EDIT 2:

Can you give a description of some of his mannerisms or any distinguishing behaviors and/or accents of this guy you can’t remember?

He’s much like Jeremy. I dare say he stole Jeremy’s act.
I’ve looked, but can’t find. Maybe I was just thinking Jeremy was two different people?

I’ve also been watching their re:View videos, but I skipped on Eraserhead because I haven’t had the chance to see it yet and that’s the kind of thing that I’m a little worried about spoilers on, haha.

Both of them. They like a lot of the same classic (and probably some modern) movies you are likely fond of and most likely have similar if not the same rationales for liking said movies.

RLM is probably the magnum opus of reviewing for me. I could listen to those guys talk about water for 40 minutes and walk away learning something while laughing my ass off.

That or someone who looks like him. Wouldn’t it be sad if someone not only jacked his reviewing style but his physical appearance as well?

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

I’ve had my eye on director, Taika Waititi, for a while now. His last two films, BOY and What We Do in the Shadows were quirky fun romps. His latest film, Wilderpeople continues that trend and is an absolute delight. This was undoubtedly one of the best films I’ve seen this year and one I’d definitely recommend. Taika continues to prove to be a great writer and director and I can’t wait to see what he does with Marvel’s Thor next year.

Old habits die hard I suppose. It’s more fun this way and besides…how long do you think a conversation about youtubers can really last?
