CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE

It spent the first twenty minutes in mind numbing set-up. As someone who holds to the ‘Ten Minute Rule’ (if it doesn’t present itself as a good comedy or action-drama or horror… within the first ten minutes, it’s very unlikely it will do so thereafter), I was surprised to see this show come-back and provide a steady flow of light and mild humor to the end.

The budget obviously wasn’t enormous but the cast was likeable and on-point.

Hart did a fine job, but having two non-white characters tended to create yet another racial-demonization situation. After DARING to think that a predator might be a predator, the most horrible and unforgivable evil in the world is the “epidemic” of cruel bullying by every white guy on the planet. Just what we need now. Jason Bateman might have done better as the straightman to Johnson, without the hate-mongering issue (assuming they wanted to avoid it.) It might have increased the odd-couple factor, as well.

On the plus side, we all learn that the new CIA is made up of people of color who understand the plight of those who know that every school yard tiff is a horror beyond description and entirely the fault of straight white guys and not whiney effeminate self-righteous pricks. Sure makes those who DARE to worry about the billions of people devastated by self-righteous homosexuals look evil and stupid, huh?

It worked in a very mild way, but I hope there is no sequel.

Ex Machina- 5/5

Beatiful science fiction. And it was real science fiction too. It explores humanity and juggles so many interesting ideas along the narrative. It also is a thriller. The unknown answers to the questions they pose adds to the tension since we don’t fully understand the A.I. The performances were great. They felt authentic and were very engaging. It makes you constantly question who’s on who’s side, what side your on, who’s ethically right in the situation etc. Ex Machina for me is easily one of the best movies of 2015.

P.S. (SPOILERS BELOW!)

The ending of the film broke my heart. It was a gutsy move by the filmmakers of this movie and though it made me sooooooo sad it was a brilliant ending. It illustrates the danger of A.I perfectly by showing the huge deception by the A.I. But by doing so it had passed the test and was truly human. By the end of the film, the caged in A.I had escaped but locked in the humans. Again though, the ending BROKE my heart. Caleb didn’t deserve any of the shit he got. Nathan actually was kinda right. At first I cheered for Ava cause I thought her and Caleb were escaping. But then once I saw Ava ditching Caleb I realized Nathan was right. So should I feel bad or did he deserve it? Ugh, Ex Machina man. Again, an overall brilliant film.

The Hateful 8 - 8.1/10

I don’t like the fact that I didn’t elaborate on how I felt about this film so I will do it now. The Hateful Eight while being the 8th film made by Quentin assures me he still has it even though this is definitely his “weakest” film. Good plot with a nice twist, good performances, good characters (though a lot of them lack depth) and a good score make this a very solid film but the long run time drags the film down. If this film had been 2 hours and 15-20 minutes it would have been much better and dare I say better than Jackie Brown and Django Unchained. I’m definitely going to need to see this again before I can give a fair assessment of the film though since I gave his other 6 films the same consideration.

I agree. I loved the film but it still ranks lowest in terms of Tarantino’s other work.

To be honest I would have preferred a follow up to Kill Bill than this film but that just shows how much I love Kill Bill.

Battlestar Galactica (1979) 8/10

This is the theatrical cut edited down from the 3 hour T.V. pilot and it’s still one heck of a good film.
For a television production this movie holds up rather well after all these years. It has some corny and cheesy low budget moments, but special effects and light humor help make up for that. The edits made from the T.V. version were well picked and the story flows better in this shorter version. Wish they would have cut out Boxy, but what can you do?

It is a very funny film indeed. I like the dance scene but for different reasons. I think it really sells the idea of how weird/odd this trip has gotten for Caleb. Good point though. The movie surprisingly has many moments of welcomed levity to balance the tone.

I’ve decided to change to a simple x/10 scoring system (with no decimals). My old letter method became a pain. This is simpler and easier.

Anyway;

The Abyss - 8/10

I like it a lot. Now, WHY IS THIS MOVIE NOT ON BLU RAY?!?!

GHOSTBUSTERS (2016)

I had watched the trailers leading up to this and they didn’t sell me on the concept, billing it as a continuation of the series with the flavor of a soft reboot. Nevertheless, was intrigued enough to give it a try.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the first half hour of the film, but as it approached the end I became more and more cynical towards it until the end credits scene, when my mood turned to genuine dislike. First of all, I enjoyed the four female leads (and especially Hemsworth’s character), although their humor is more improvisational and ‘messy’ than the humor of the original Ghostbusters cast. However, the film is definitely a reboot except for a single line of dialogue implying the previous existence of ‘ghostbusters’. My main gripe is with the concept of the reboot itself. Simply put, the movie would have worked far better as a continuation and a passing of the torch than as a reboot. Bill Murray’s cameo, at first merely a cameo, becomes a bit part that is entirely unfunny. It was a wasted opportunity, since Murry could have easily been played as the Han Solo of this film, a touchstone for the fan’s love for the original. I don’t hold the original Ghostbusters in particularly high esteem, but after recently rewatching it, it feels naturally goofy, classy, and funny where each scene of (2016) feels more and more contrived.

The movie proceeds almost beat for beat in time with the original Ghostbusters, yet apart from a few improvements over the original (the increased focus on ghostbusting tech being the only example that springs to mind), the movie fails to bring anything new to the table, and will naturally suffer in comparison to the original. In other words: if it aint broke, don’t fix it. The final act of the film suffers the most from these plot appropriations, with events, imagery, and entire characters placed into the film simply because they existed in the original. Now excised from their cultural zietgiest, these elements feel completely out of place and reek of half-baked, emotionally manipulative writing.

(SONY ENTERTAINMENT STAMP OF APPROVAL) out of 10.

STAR TREK BEYOND

I just got out of an early showing, and my review for this is similar to my review of Ghostbusters (2016), albeit to a lesser extent. The film opens on a fun reintroduction of the crew and proceeds to put them through the wringer, more physically than emotionally. Whereas in Ghostbusters my enjoyment declined linearly throughout the film, in Beyond I was happily invested until the revelation of the villain’s plan, when my interest immediately nosedived.

Unlike Ghostbusters, however, I left with an overall good feeling about the film and of the franchise as a whole. The film respects both the original timeline and the Kelvin timeline, and Lin brings an expected increase in quips and action. I could do without the increased action in favor of a more measured, philosophical movie, but that battle was lost with Star Trek (2009) and holding that against it is beating a dead horse. Lin knows that the best thing about Star Trek is the characters, so the movie never goes far wrong.

The best thing about Star Trek is that it leaves you feeling like the future is bright and full of possibility. For me, it is mission accomplished, and I look forward to seeing new worlds and new civilizations in Star Trek 14.

Ranking - Approximate order from worst to best:
Star Trek: Into Darkness
Nemesis
Insurrection
The Final Frontier
The Motion Picture
Generations
Star Trek Beyond
Star Trek (2009)
The Search For Spock
The Undiscovered Country
The Voyage Home

“Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack” (1979) 4/10

This was the second Battlestar Galactica theatrical release. It is a re-edited version of the original Battlestar Galactica T.V. series episodes “The Living Legend”, “Fire in Space” and the pilot episode “Saga of a Star World”, with some extra (never used on the T.V. show) model shots thrown in to extend the running time to theatrical film standards. I can see how Universal wanted to get their money back from the expensive special effects bill that the T.V. show ran up, but this film does not play as well as the slimmed down pilot had. The “Fire in Space” segment is so laughable. The nova space-minefield segment from the previous movie was shoehorned into the final battle segment and it just did not work. At least this movie version cut most of of the boxy scenes out. This movie never played in theaters in the U.S. (wise move), but was a big money maker overseas.

Halloween (1978) - 8/10

Very great. I loved the performances, especially Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, and Donald Pleasence as Dr Loomis. I adored the direction and camerawork, I particularly liked how the camera would linger on a shot for a few second after the focus had left, leaving you wondering if The Shape would appear. I wish Lynda wasn’t so annoying though, and showing Michael’s face at the end kind of ruined the mystery around his character. The open ending was great though, and I will soon watch Halloween II.
