Cast Away (2000) - 6/10

Mostly enjoyable. Tom Hanks was pretty good. I hated how the film skipped ahead four years, as I think by showing those four years Chuck Noland could have been better developed.

The film is already 2 1/2 hours long, I think showing all that time would’ve made it too long for the theaters to want to show it 😛.

I see that, but I still thought it felt rushed.

“McBain: The Movie” AKA “Eraser” (1996)

A twentieth anniversary viewing of this… production, for me. I actually went to see this in the cinema all those years ago for reasons I still can’t explain and which are even more baffling to me today.

They managed to, one assumes, bribe or threaten the families of Vanessa Williams, James Coburn and James Caan into starring in this. Arnold is as reliably naff as ever and there’s a bit with some 90’s CG alligators that had me snorting my tea out my nose.

It successfully stereotypes Russians, African-Americans, Italian-Americans, Hispanics, Homosexuals AND has a good go at white collar management (every last one of them is corrupt!) so at least it’s not discriminating!

The total disregard for the laws of physics, how computers work (was that Windows 95 in a government lab?), how firearms function and most egregiously, how aeroplanes fly is laughable in a film that plays things as straight and “realistic” as it can.

The bad guy’s name is Deguerin, and given that he’s essentially a gunrunner, that’s about as clever as this waste of everybody’s money gets.

If this had been animated with Rainier Wolfcastle starring it would have been a genuine classic.

I give it a hugely generous 1 and a half “you-survived-that-fall-and-all-you-need-is-a-walking-stick?!”'s out of 5.

Independence Day: Resurgence -

(Note that I saw this film stoned so I might have enjoyed it more than normally. Great movie to watch high.)

I saw the original Independence Day opening weekend 20 years ago and I loved it, so of course I was excited to see this on the big screen. Is it better than the original? No. Does it suck asphalt? Hell no. It’s about on par in quality or just a hair under.

I will say that the characters and dialogue are a bit cliched and paint by numbers. The plot is a predictable blockbuster three-act structure. About an hour into it you’ll know where it’s headed, who survives as heroes and who will be causalities of war.

But the good outweighs the bad. The actual story here is smart. The human race survived an alien attack, what is Earth like now? The progression of technology and military is logical and well thought out. And the CGI was decent. Didn’t look like a documentary but also didn’t feel like a cartoon.

Above all else this is a fun popcorn movie. If you liked the original, it’s a good bet you’ll like the legacy sequel. I would love to see what this franchise does next.

7/10

Being inebriated can vastly alter your movie watching experience. His reaction is far different from mine in which I am far more critical about a film when I see it after I smoke. So if I like a film when I’m watching it high that’s how I know it’s good.

I mean, I have no problem with it, but I’d prefer not to know.

Well that’s fine. You should probably stay clear of my post when Rogue One, Episode VIII and IX gets released then 😄

Drag Me to Hell (2009) - 8/10

I appreciated casting mostly unknowns (I only recognized Justin Long, from that awful Die Hard movie), as it helped the suspension of disbelief. Alison Lohman was very likable as the lead, and her character
was interesting. At times it was genuinely scary, and at times I found myself laughing, like when
Christine killed the kitten. It was well directed and well shot, with great music. I also loved the twist ending.

Evil Dead (2013) - 6/10

I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would, but I certainly didn’t love it. In terms of production, it was first rate, with great effects, great direction, creepy music, and fun camerawork. In terms of story it was mediocre, and I didn’t care for some characters, and one I outright hated (the brother). I liked the female lead and the Kurt Cobain looking guy (who got absolutely brutalized), and I liked the changes to the original story.

Watching Dune again right now. I remember railing against this disc in the bad blu-rays thread a while back, but this time around it looks good enough that I think I was probably just full of shit last time. The things that I thought were problems with the transfer now look more like they’re probably native to the negative, and the sound, which I didn’t like in December, is totally great with my new(ish) reciever. So yeah. Sorry, disc.

DEADPOOL
It got the tone and character right, but I just felt it was boring and corny, even with it’s “edgy attitude”.
The movie is at all times two steps behind the audience. It’s always totally obvious what’s gonna happen next- and you’re never wrong! Seriously, I coulda paused the move about 10 or 15 min.s in and guessed the rest beat-for-beat.
The ending was eye-rollingly corny.
Can’t think of a reason to ever watch a second time.
