Yes, but George was able to copyright droid. All he had to do was chop off the a and the n. Who knows how much Motorola pays Lucasfilm just to use it?

My wife is 15 years with an intellectual properties law firm. I'll try to repeat this the way my non-IP brain heard her explanation. ;-)

Stormtrooper on the toy package has TM after it because that easily recognizable figure, in a setting we know to be the Star Wars universe, is trademarked.  It's a notice to consumers and competitors that the entity inside the box (toy, setting, name) refers to a Star Wars franchise related item. Meaning: Consumer, - rest assured that's a real Star Wars toy. Competitors - "we'll sue if you copy it or use it without permission".

It could only have the R after it if it were an actual registered trademark granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It isn't, nor will it ever be. Even Lucas wouldn't have tried to register Stormtrooper. He used that term, he didn't invent it. He has no rights pertaining to it unless it's being used on a Star Wars related toy, game, etc and is referring directly to that character.

He was clever with Droid because there was no known use of that shortened/slang version of Android prior to 1977. He also made his trademark application very specific and worded it to include just about every version of a personal electronic or automated device possible.

That would be between George and the Lucasfilm employee.

I can't imagine George foresaw personal cell phones back in the 70's. You'd think he would have cashed in on the personal robot industry of the 80's, which was somewhat inspired by Artoo.

This little fellow actually got a cameo in an classic 80's space movie. Funny how the only robots that have made any inroads into our households today really are glorified vacuum cleaners.

New alien concept art leaked. Codename "Rose" People seem to think that this might be an older design of the alien handing the lightsaber to Leia in the trailer. If that's the case then this could be quite close to what Maz Kanata might end up looking like in the film.

That is "faceless" :D

Is he/she drinking mate tea?

Well she wouldn't be the only one with a drink.

I get the impression that Kanata's "palace" is going to heavily allude to the Mos Eisley Cantina scene from ANH.
Heck they even got one of the extras from that scene to appear in TFA.

Also the concept art shows an alien who might be Kanata in a kitchen with what looks like a bar in the background.

(PS. Maybe I'm being a bit dense but I have no clue what you mean by "faceless.")

True, but that is not a common drink, though, according to Wikipedia:

[...] is a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused drink [...] It is also consumed in Syria, the largest importer in the world, and in Lebanon.

It's like they're recreating some sort of South American-like (or Middle East-like) setting.

:D I mean that that alien's species seem to "suffer" of a disease even worst than Anakin's: not only he doesn't have eyebrows, he/she barely has a nose, no lips, no hair and has very little ears! They seem to have an almost shapeless face.

Right, I though you were trying to make a joke or something. And I see what you mean, she/he does look a bit "burned".

Also now that I look closer at it's head it actually kinda looks like a coconut. Which makes the coconut drink so much more of a weird choice.

There's some stuff in here that must be complete BS I'd hope, but at least some of this stuff, mostly about the puppet FX, seems cool.

I've heard a LOT about The Force Awakens from my friends who are artists and worked as consultants for the Creature Shop. If you didn't know, they are the ones who fabricated and all the aliens, puppets, props and such for the film.

One of the things they constantly tell me is that they are afraid of a fan backlash against the film like with the prequels. As old fans themselves, they say everyone at the shop was really positive going in but are honestly worried about the final product (in terms of art design and execution of concepts and so on, they don't know anything about the film's acting or pacing obviously). It has been almost a year since any of them has done actual work on TFA and only spec work for Episode 8. Second is that the design process got a bit hellish at times, with an art director telling them they had to throw out literally an entire planned section of the movie, with asiatic-style architecture and aliens and culture, everything, because one of the executives thought it could be racist. That led to a giant crunch to get new, less offensive aliens, which is why the puppets already revealed in the Vanity Fair article tend to look similar with smushed noses and rhino skin. Basically they tried to get away with reusing multiple designs for the same alien as different aliens. They say the architecture is now "uninspired." Another thing are aliens who were supposed to be in the start of the film got replaced with humans, again because of questionable design.  There is also a montage of aliens in the film including a large crime boss who is "not Jabba the Hutt but might as well be." Very few old species are back, except famous characters they said, and that a lot of character design concepts besides aliens were also scrapped because of rewrites and collapsing scenes together. One of the cooler things they told me is that Warwick Davis and Kiran Shah both play alien puppets in the film (not Ewoks), but they also gave Shah a cameo in the film as a body on an operating table in a medic bay. They made a scale dummy for him and everything, and they even sneaked it into a photo at the TFA panel at the Star Wars convention.

In terms of the plot, they didn't tell me much besides the middle of the film has an insane amount of aliens, almost all puppets with animatronic parts. There is a really cool process that allows them to do mocap on actors just for the face and gestures and map it onto a puppet. That is, they filmed a scene with a physical prop and use CGI to animate the face and subtler movements. Apparently it looks super realistic.  Andy Serkis and Lupita Nyong'o and others both play mocapped puppet aliens, Serkis being part cybernetic and Nyong'o being small, cute, and funny. There are also new puppet/CGI droids they are excited for.

Now for the juicier stuff that they dropped on me.  The worst kept secret of course is that Han Solo dies. The rumor is there is a dumb "You are not my father" line in the scene. Everyone in the shop also knows Daisy Ridley who plays Rey has a Padme/Amidala moment where her real name is revealed to be Kira Skywalker, and she had been living in hiding and thought dead like Luke.  They say that's also a stupid reveal because they used her real name all through production and everyone already knew. John Boyega's character is Finn Gruno (or Grunno), a stormtrooper who defects early in the film. Oscar Isaac plays Poe Dameron, "the new Han Solo" who apparently hits on alien chicks (at least in concept art) and a pilot named Gleev. Only other major thing is Domhnall Gleeson plays Major General Tarkin, a clone of the original Tarkin. It's rumored he dies in the film but will obviously implied he could be cloned again.

Lastly, some other tibits are that a running joke in the film is kicking the new BB8 (ball) droid. Rey, Poe, and C3PO all supposedly kick him, which was apparently harder to do than you'd think because the little guy is a puppet on a stick. Another rumor in the shop is that an alien who gets his arm ripped off by Chewbacca in the middle of the film is played by Simon Pegg. And of course, they say everyone is going to love seeing Admiral Ackbar again saying "It's a trap!" but this time, it's the good guys' trap.

That post was pretty convincing until the end there. I've seen BB in person, he is no puppet on a stick.

Actually, JJ mentioned a while back the BB-8 was puppeteered on set with digital work done to remove the wires/crew.  It may be that either the robotic version wasn't completed till after shooting, or the current robotic version doesn't allow them enough fine control in the movement to accomplish the level detail they seek.  How the actual set-up was on set, I'm not entirely sure of.

I don't know but the BB we saw was remarkably expressive. It had incredibly fine head movement, was amazingly emotive and completely mobile.

There would be zero need for a puppet if they had that on set.

It was on a 4chan thread, which mostly sketchy, but this at least looked interesting.

One would sooner find more reliable info scrawled on the walls of a public restroom though. ;)

This source describes what could be the next trailer soon. This sounds pretty awesome to me, if true, especially the ending ;)

Snowy landscape. Speeders zoom past.
The same military gathering from previous trailer. Kylo Ren walks down landing ramp and in front of legion to chants.
Max Von Sydow narrating. Detailing the icy planet, the number of stormtroopers, Captain Phasma, and Kylo Ren and the fact some one is a fugitive.
Max Von Sydow talking “And you want to break in?”
Rey Finn Han and Chewie. Chewie roars, Han says he tried to talk them out of it.
This Christmas.
Dogfight over a lake.
Finn deflecting lasers with a blue lightsaber.
Little orange alien touches Rey’s forehead, massive flash of white light.
Imperial commander on bridge with Phasma “I want him alive. Do what you want with the girl.”
Kylo Ren and that sexy lightsaber.
Black and red X Wing shooting blue and white ones.
Tie Fighters pursue the Falcon in space.
Journey to a galaxy.
Rey screams at sight of Phasma.
A Star Destroyer plummets towards a snowy planet.
Kylo Ren unmasked lifting an officer into the air.
Orange alien with Leia looking on in horror
Artoo and Threepio in what looks like a bunker as lasers fly through the air.
X Wings shooting down Tie Fighters.
Rey acrobatically navigating a mechanical landscape.
Kylo Ren observing a river of lava with his back turned to the camera, lightsaber ignited.
Far far away.
Black.
Gravelly voice from first teaser.
“They found him”
“Who” normal voice.
“Skywalker…” Gravelly voice.

Well, no new trailer or clip coming to SDCC.

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/07/06/star-wars-comic-con-panel

Perfectly fine with me, since teaser 2 wasn't that long ago AND I usually like watching behind-the-scenes featurettes to get a look into a movie instead, like PJ's vlogs for The Hobbit. September feels like a good place for another trailer, one that shows a grander view of the feel of the movie, but still hides the plot away.

Point is, it's not manually puppeted with a stick like that "rumor" stated.
