Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD** — Page 117

It's the official Star Wars blog. Every part of that post was meticulously thought out. They're not going to just throw in that little tidbit at the end unless they're certain of their facts. They know how fast that kind of news travels and what a mess it would be if they would have to retract such a statement later on.

You're probably right, but if some official publication like, let's say, the novelization, comes out with a timeline in the first couple pages that places ep7 at 40 years post-Jedi, is anyone really gonna go back to this moment from what'll then be 21 months earlier and really care?

I mean, as long as they don't bring up an exact number in the actual movie (just as they didn't bring up exact numbers in the OT except for Ben's "a thousand generations" line about the Jedi Knights), it truly won't matter if it's officially 40 instead of 30.

I'd love to hear somwbody mention that the Empire and the Sith were destroyed at Endor.

The Sith maybe but a Galactic Empire in one day and in one battle?

I'm not counting on Lawrence "Does Luke become the new Emperor?" Kasdan to have a problem with it.

They weren't. The Empire and the Sith were destroyed at The Battle of the Forest Moon of Endor.

Happy? :-)

P.S. There's a damn good movie about this.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Very happy. Endor was destroyed long before ROTJ.

I don't think they can cheat the original cast's age as much as they did back then. It's thirty years later for them and us, why make it needlessly complicated?

Harrison Ford's age actually match's up much better with Han's if they go with 40 years later, actually.

Han is supposed to be 33 in RotJ. Harrison Ford was 39 when they started filming. He'll be 72 in July and they start shooting this in May. If Han is 74, that's much closer to his actual age.

Mark's and Luke's ages actually match up perfectly, as Luke was 23 and Mark is now 62.

Carrie would be playing a Leia who's several years older than she is, due to the five year gap between her and Mark.

Lando and Billy Dee are both 76.

Wedge and Denis are both 66.

It makes way more sense to set this 40 years later.

As long as they aren't putting more makeup on to make them look older than they are already, I suppose I could live with it.

Chewie and the droids will still be in their prime. ;)

As news about the forthcoming Star Wars 7 shoot continues to leak out, the latest reports suggest that Iceland has been added to the list of filming locations.

According to Icelandic site visir.is, the crew will be heading for the Scandinavian nation this Spring ahead of the main production kicking off in May.

However don’t expect to see Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford et al on Icelandic soil, as it appears that the production team have mainly landscape shots in mind.

The site reports that Iceland will be used mainly for filming landscape ‘plate shots’ which will then be used for scenery – although the news has sparked speculation that the movie could be partly set on the ice planet Hoth.

A secret rendezvous in a place only old Rebels would know about? J.J. must really like ice planets. ;)

I recall reading something on the ST '09 DVD that said the original plan for those scenes was to have Kirk be stranded on a desert planet--and when he and original-flavor Spock meet up with Scotty they do it in a seedy cantina full of aliens.

No surprise he dropped Star Trek like a hot potato when Disney came calling.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

That is interesting.

I really liked JJ's rendition of Star Trek, but did notice a bunch of Star Wars themes throughout. (even without them being stranded on a desert planet with a cantina!) Not that I minded, since I love both Star Wars and Star Trek.

By the way, I am new here. Anywhere I am supposed to go to introduce myself? :)

Does it matter whether it's 30 or 40 years? They never mention time difference between entries in the films. Iger saying it's 30 years basically just establishes that the returning characters will be played by their respective actors (rather than being re-casted, which some thought was a possibility at the time of the trilogy's announcement).

Welcome! We used to have a thread for that in Off Topic. This is somewhat similar though.

I'd recommend familiarizing yourself with the forum rules. As well as this thread to get a handle on the local lingo. Good luck and watch out for Frink! ;) =P

JJ's Star Trek had a cantina, it was just in Iowa instead of on Tatooine.

Mind you, we've had seedy bar scenes in movie Trek before. ;)

"GENESIS?!"

Nimoy even mentioned on the commentary that the alien guy's weird speech pattern was Yoda-inspired.

Love that character, so memorable for such a minor part.

But I think he talks much more like Gollum, and the Gollum voice was minted by Peter Woodthorpe in 1978 (And in a good part by Wolfe Morris in 1968) both long before ST3 and Yoda (Not to mention the books from 1937 and 1954).

I hope JJ doesn't just do homages to scenes like the Cantina but I do hope that the characters hang out in some dangerous places and not boring senate chambers.

I'd be happy if he didn't do any homages at all. We had enough of that in the prequels, like Anakin and Obi-Wan walking into that bar on Coruscant.

The only connective tissue I really care about is the style of the filmmaking itself. We already know this will be shot in the same format as the OT, but I hope Abrams and Mindel are able to make it fit with the overall aesthetic established in those movies.
