Jedi 30th Ann. screening at Pixar...of the original version!

Author

Just got my new Star Wars Insider yesterday. There's an interview with Phil Tippett and he talks about going to a 30th Anniversary screening of Jedi at Pixar. They screened it to celebrate the release of the "making of" book last year. He talks about how it was an original print that was in fantastic condition.

Is this the first "official" screening we've heard about of an original print?

I think its progress just having something official and purely promotional even acknowledge the existence of an original version.

Phil Tippett is reliable right? Thered be almost nobody better to spot when his work had been tampered with.

Hopefully this is a sign that the regime is becoming a little more relaxed about the GOUT.

Yeah...if you can't trust Phil Tippett, who can you trust? He was more directly impacted by the SE's than any of us. Let us not forget, when asked about them he said:

Tippett: ...you know it was about re-releasing something to get more money to feed the beast and all that kind of stuff. So...

Interviewer: So you don't like it?

Tippett: No, it sucks. No, I mean the whole thing with the whole uh, what was the name of the town, Mos Eisley...I mean the way that he shot it like Sergio Leone was just great and a breath of fresh air and so true to the material. And then when he went back in, put in all that stupid stuff.

JEDIT: Actual video clip of the conversation.

Interesting, but still a long way from the general public being able to watch it again.

There just was a public screening of the original THX 1138 in the UK, and the robot policemen didn't show up to confiscate the print, so perhaps things are changing.

I would even go so far as to be skeptical that it was an original, without a reliable eye witness who would know the difference.  We've heard other screenings make the same claim.

His comments were actually in relation to the lack of CGI and how good some of the puppetry was. So he was specifically talking about things that were eventually changed.

Considering how dull the GOUT ROTJ looks, I wonder what ROTJ originally looked like.

From here to page 34, they're scattered around a bit.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

But .... But ..... I thought "original prints are in poor condition." ;)

Unless by "original version" they just meant the 1997 SE ;)

 Yup, baby steps.

What are you talking about? The original prints don't exist anymore, haven't you heard?

A friend of mine saw it as a teenager in '83 and told me about how people in the audience would throw their hands in the air during the "fighters, coming in" shot because it felt like you were actually flying the Millennium Falcon.

This was supposed to have been a showing of the unaltered version but ended up being a digital showing of the blu-ray instead. How can you have it as a 30th anniversary with a version that is a year old? And no mention in the advertisment that is was NOT going to be the original and even attaching the original trailer for it. Bit of false advertising. But rumours of Disney getting the originals cleaned up and ready do seem to be getting a little more weight with this Pixar story. And i'm certain that Phil would know the difference between the original and the altered versions. Fingers crossed.

That's unfortunate, as it's the venue that recently showed a 1970's print of THX 1138.

Screening a version from 2011 for its 30th anniversary... that's fucking ridiculous. Why not just cancel it if you cannot receive a print of said film.

Say what!?

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Hmmm, that's unlike the PCC. Usually really cool guys and best cinema in the universe IMO. e.g. when ever they do an Indiana Jones Marathon they only screen the first 3 with the disclaimer...

"Question: What Happened To 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'? Answer - What DID happen to that film???"

Wonder how many people walked out during the musical number at Jabba's palace?

Here's an excerpt from that interview in Insider:

"Well, CGI is the tool that is used to create effects these days," he responds. "But I think a lot of practical work from that era holds up better. Last year, I went to a 30th anniversary screening of Return of the Jedi and they found a really good 1983 print that had none of the later computer graphics in there [shown at Pixar to celebrate the release of the Making of book--Ed]. It was in really good shape and I was really shocked at the work we did back then--some of it is so much better than a lot of stuff you see today."

Oh? Well I'm glad I didn't turn up then - I'd have walked out right as the first few notes of Jedi Rocks were being played!

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.
