I can confirm there were SE VCDs produced in Asia. I owned a set that unfortunately has been lost in the sands of time...

I remember seeing them on ebay around 2000/2001 or so and thinking whhaaaaa?? It would be an interesting thing to add to the old collection. Around that time I actually made some vcds of video I captured before dvd burners were affordable.  As I recall they were mpeg1 and supposed to be around the same resolution as vhs but I remember thinking they didn't look very good.

VCD is, hands-down, the worst home video format ever.

Even CED is preferable to VCD.

Yuck, yuck, yuck.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I don't mean to add to the clutter of this, but I assume this was posted to the wrong thread? Meanwhile, I'm still saving pennies to send 3TB of HD down to you, Poita.

The differences between 2K, 4K and 10K are shown on page 20 of this document, which is great reading for anyone wanting an overview of film scanning.

http://c-sideprod.ch/wp-content/medias/2012/10/4K_plus.pdf

I finally got around to reading this - the parts I could understand, anyway.

As I understand it, scanning a 16mm print at 4K is ideal, but 6k is the minimum adequate for a 35mm negative. That said, if you get your hands on any 35mm prints, would you be scanning at 4K, 10K, or something in between?

Apologies if you have addressed this elsewhere.

Depend on the print, a great neg I would attempt to scan at 10K, however most prints resolve more than 2K but less than 4K. So 35mm theatrical prints I would be scanning at 4K, 16mm prints @ 2.5K.

They are 120MB per frame, I am just finishing off the Super8 and 16mm scans I have to get through, then will post some 35mm frames, probably early next month.

Wow!  I scan my still photo negs at 4800dpi and they come out around 90mb (and they are HUGE).  I bet you get amazing quality at that resolution.  I can't wait to see a sample frame (even though you'll surely have to compress it mightily to get it online).

No compression should be needed. Just a file sharing site :)

I'm going to be in Napean hospital until late next week, so if I don't respond to PMs I'm not being rude, but will follow them up in about a week.

Are you feeling all right? If not, then I wish you all the best, man! Take care. =D

What can you get a Wookiee for (Life Day) Christmas when he already owns a comb?

Oh no! Fire-related? Forgive me if you've already shared the story (and possibly point me to the correct thread?).

Get well soon.

Hahahaha, now that is a fair comparison.

Congrats on getting this beast to your home poita. And I am glad you could get it in working order. Those resolutions are incredible, I am looking forward to some reports on how the scans turn out.

Hope your health issues improve soon. Stay well man!

Off-topic here, but did you know the Star Wars Holiday Special aired multiple times in Australia? It's the only country in the world I know of where it was aired more than once. It's supposed to have aired in 1979 and 1980. I have a copy that was aired in 1983, and another from August 1984. I have heard it aired as late as the late 80s before it finally stopped.

Why did the Aussies love the Holiday Special so much that they had to see it more than once? :)

In country areas there were only 2 television stations in the 1980s. Stuff just got shown over and over. Even the capital cities only had 4 TV stations at the time, and cable didn't exist.

So yeah, I saw it multiple times on the telly, I think it was shown way more than twice.

What I find interesting about this is that somehow Lucasfilm or CBS kept it from being shown more than once everywhere else...but somehow Australia was special. Either that, or the TV stations were just ignoring any mandates they were given!

I'll likely be moving to Melbourne to join my wife down under by sometime next year. What better place for me, I suppose, than the land where the Holiday Special showed over and over again...
