Info Wanted: Did anyone do a preservation of the 'Behind the Magic' DVD?

I was just wondering if anyone did this- put all of the stuff on the 2-disc Behind the Magic set onto a DVD, with the DVD menus exactly the same as on the CD’s. If not, that would be an awesome project for someone smarter than I am

It would probably take too much time, though. There’d be so much involved.

I had heard that FanFiltration was thinking about it, but I don't know if anything was happening with it.

I have the CD set, and it's one of my prized possessions. You can spend LITERALLY hours going through the character profiles, go through the collectible galleries and play the trivia game.

It would be fantastic to see this converted to DVD... however, I don't think it's very likely given the sheer size of the thing, in addition to some of the elements that would be difficult to duplicate for a DVD. If someone thinks they can do it, they have my support and more power to them.

But since it runs fine on Windows XP (as opposed to Making Magic, which doesn't), I would say just using the original CD set is the best bet.

True; but then again, Behind The Magic is a little too interactive to watch on a TV anyway. Far more so than Making Magic, which just had a few things to click on. BTM actually has scroll bars and other things that would be difficult and frustrating to operate with a TV remote.

It's true that Behind the Magic is too interactive to put on DVD in it's original form. But maybe just the content? It would be easy to take text that was too big, and instead of having to operate a scroll bar, just make two or three different DVD slides.

At least, someone has to figure out how to transfer the stormtrooper weapons testing room

Have you seen FanFiltration's preservation of Making Magic? I think you underestimate some of the talent that roams these boards.

Making Magic is nothing compared to Behind the Magic.

Oh... It has been a while since I looked at my Behind the Magic CDs. Whoops.

Hey Brad, you still have that capture of the Stormtrooper weapons test? Send me an e-mail.

I tracked down a copy for my PC after requesting this for preservation onto DVD some time back. Only then did it become all to clear why its never been done. Its a monster CD of navigation menues, a solar system full of text based info, and oodles of windowed clips. Making Magic is a different kettle of fish compared to this one. Surly it canna be done!

Its damn fine piece of software to boot, so its worth hunting down if you've never had the chance experience it.

I'll have to try to come up with this sometime. It sounds interesting.

What would be really cool is to process the Behind the Magic cut scenes with Live Feed's software. Live Feed is a ground-breaking application that can take old kinescopes at 24 frames a second and create 30 frames a second video. The results are supposed to be amazing. The new Elvis / Sullivan set utilized this technology. By doing this it gives the shows a "video look"... kinda like the difference between watching a soap opera and a movie... a more "live" feeling.

It looks like the clips on the Magic CD are about 15 frames a second... perhaps Live Feed could give it a make-over.

This isn't a bad idea. While there is a lot of video on the BTM discs, a lot of it is clips from the trilogy, so these could be imported into the project quite easily.

Wasn't the 'Making Magic' edit basically a preservation of all the video clips from the 'Behind the Magic' CDs?

No, these two are complete different. Making Magic came out 1996 and before Behind the Magic which came 1997. MM included only stuff about the upcoming Special Editions, mainly videos. BtM is much bigger and it covers up the whole trilogy including expanded universe. It's like a huge databank of all the info that was available in 1997. Videos are only a small part of BtM.

I don't want to be a killjoy here, but wasn't the Behind the Magic CD-ROM a commercial release? And as such, something that may be available legitimately on the second hand market?

I'm leaving this thread open for discussion about the disc's contents, but please no more talk about software piracy.

They were both commercial releases. I have both in their original boxes.

Sorry, did not realize this. I always assumed it was a limited freebie release, bundled with a magazine or something...

If both were commercial releases, but "Making Magic" was okay to be released, then why can't we talk about preserving "Behind the Magic"?

Take care,
