I agree with ocpmovie on the bitrate. 9Mbps is bitrate whoring - unless you're encoding a 1-pass CBR or on-the-fly with a MPEG capture card/DVD recorder.

A 5-pass encode on anything over 4Mbps is IMO more than adequate, less than that you might want to think about increasing the number of passes, below 3.5Mbps you should consider deleting some extras, and less than 3Mbps should be avoided.

I would never go under 3.6 unless it was for some very very unimportant extra. (Yeah, I've gone pretty low for lesser extras and easter eggs and things.)

4 is the standard setting on most M2V encoders, and a decent setting to use. Anyone who thinks that using the standard setting "loses all credibility," well ....

Pick up any PROFESSIONALLY authored DVD and check out the bitrate. You're not going to see "4" as the standard unless the PQ is sub-par.

It also matters what you're watching it on. The bigger it is, the more you're going to notice problems. I deal with videophiles who have 92" projectors. Personally, I have a 51" HDTV. You? Maybe you're still watching it on a regular TV and aren't going to notice the quality difference but I'm sorry, 4 ain't gonna cut it.

Just out of curiosity, what program is everybody using when they talk of encoding here? Not a newbie question, just wondering which encoder is your weapon of choice?
(Not meaning to get off-topic so this question goes out to DigitalFreakNYC, OCPMovie & Moth3r only).

Professional DVDs have 2 layers to play with and can waste space all they want. Also, they're working with higher-quality masters, which require a higher bitrate and which people expect to be "perfect" on the pro DVD. Many of us are transferring VHS or laserdisc material, which definitely doesn't require a high bitrate because of the sotfness of the image. The idea of wasting a bitrate of 9 on a laserdisc or VHS is ... well, wasteful.

Clearly we're talking about different things, and I would prefer this "discussion" to end right now as I find it pointless and insulting.

I'm on a Mac and I encode directly from Final Cut Pro usually, and I've also been known to use Compressor. A.Pack is used for sound.

i have this from newsgroup without the cover or disc label. you seem to have label for this title? is there a place to download it? and what about a cover?

i always rant about the cover and the label, but in my opinion this whole preservation and edit thing is nowdays up to a level that i would like to have a decent dvd copy on my shelf with a maker made (or approved) cover and label.

i´m not a techno nerd - no offence - to begin with but... when watching this i have to say that there were moments when i didn´t notice the change from hs material to bootleg cam. call me blind but fantastic job! thanks ocpmovie!

people you have to be proud of your releases, cause i will be for you if nothing more. make covers! make labels! ... or if you haven´t got time or find making them unneccesary please make a note of it in the nfo file. friends always ask me for more pif titles and the look on their faces when they get a blank dvd on an empty dvd shell...

Just wanted to post, now that I've checked out this entire disc. It's great. It's got simple but attractive menus, a good composite job for "Ewok" and a nice collection of little extras. It was the first time I'd seen THX Soundtrack and that was really interesting as I love featurettes about the different of aspects of filmmaking. Thank you for making this disc. Now I gotta find a cover to print out. (Got this from Rikter by the way, just in case you were wondering).

If you want to know why the DVD version of Boba Fett shooting wasn't used for my edit of Return of the Ewok, watch both edits one after the other. They bear no resemblance to each other.

I can answer that. Because that portion on the 2004 DVD blooper reel was of an alternate take of that scene. Higher quality, yes. But the goal in this project, I think, was to recreate the film in its original form, even if that meant a sacrifice of quality. For instance, I've noticed that in some sections (ex. the dressing room scenes), SW.com's version had clearer sounding dialogue, but used an alternate soundtrack in the background. In order to recreate the original, this good quality dialogue couldn't be used.

That is quite correct. In order to post the portion of the film that they did, SW.com had make some changes to avoid sticky clearance issues. The makers of "ROTE And Other Little Films" were bound by no such restrictions. Completeness was the main goal in that project.

Of course, the menu gave a perfect opportunity to use the alternate footage. This also explains why it is that Lucasfilm has high-quality footage of a couple shots from ROTE, but not of the entire film: the shots are not the same, and the complete original film version of ROTE remains lost.

BTW: I don't know how many of you have heard, since it hasn't been widely reported at all, but it seems that ROTE director and SW/Indy First Assistant Director David Tomblin just passed away this last August. I found out through a website related to The Prisoner (which he was heavily involved in), since I'm a big fan of that old TV series.

R.I.P., David Tomblin (widely reported as the finest First Assistant Director there ever was). You will be missed.
