Didn’t Vader already kill both those pilots in the original? I could be mistaken

In the reel it shows the stormtrooper killing the second one in the 2011 blu-ray.

Holy hell! My bad! That is an incredible change that makes Vader even more badass!

It reminds me of his skills during his Anakin years. Which is fine with me.

This is a very minor thing, but the Aurebesh text in the shot at 4:07 of the comparison video was redone for the 2020 Blu-Ray, but the 2011 Blu-Ray is still used as the source here.

Looks Great! Looking forward to this!

One of the little changes I really like is the use of adding another wide of Obi-Wan, which I’m pretty sure is taken from Light & Magic. Great to see some unused material and VFX being finished for an edit like this!

I was wondering how he did it!

Adywan, what’s your point of view doing the 1080p HD version when the 4K version is out?

Author
Time

Not to speak for him but probably something along the lines of, “Because 1080p is really nice, I can’t perpetually update these things every seven years, and it’s a high upgrade from the DVD quality the project started as.”

My stance on revising fan edits.

Plus, if you have a good TV that upscales content… there is pretty much zero difference in quality from films made in 77/80/83. Be thankful! I remember articles titled “720p is enough” for Revisited… 1080p is a blessing 😃

Good catch at 3:17. I never noticed that the hallway was missing in the back of the room!

Why did you make the second sun more round in the sunset? Being so low, it ought to be elliptical: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_refraction

Also, I’m not sure the red Artoo recolor is a good idea. I know why you’ve done it, but it looks so similar to Artoo (because, of course, it is) that it’s really distracting. Better to allow the viewer’s eye to focus where it ought (Luke & Obiwan) than to fix a minor issue.

I must atmist I found (not) R2 distracting in that shot, I replayed it a couple of time to understand what had been done. While it does fix that small blocking issue, I’ve gotta say it doesnt feel like its had the right affect. I know its a finished shot so I get its probably something you don’t want to go back to, but if you do, you could try chaning the (not) R2 to a different coloured unit. Like seen in earlier shots. There is one with a black Body and white panels I think, and another that is yellow. But as it stands the chome dome, and white body just screems R2-D2 even if the pannels are red. The only other thing I can think of is to keep (new) R2-D2 in frame a little longer so you have time to spot him.

Anyway beatiful stuff as usual and I had no freaking idea you had added that DS shot, its truely a seamless shot. Just makes me wonder what else you’ve suck in.

It’s also because the Red Artoo is so close to our heroes that he’s obviously traveling with them. It’s jarring and distracting.

If Ady is up for it, maybe a different recolor of R2 so it isn’t as obvious it is a blue to red switch?

It’s the same height to the horizon as it would be in the previous shot, with it being only a couple of seconds after that one. I matched both the suns to their previous state. Both suns wouldn’t be so elliptical as they are in the original version.

As for the red R2, well thats something that was done in the original version and it has been recreated to match that. No one complained about it in 15 years. But i have another option to fix that shot that i’m exploring at the moment.

Personally I’d keep the original close up and fix the previous shot to match, but fair enough either way. Thanks for explaining.

That was one fantastic preview! I know it’s really subtle, but the moving starfields make the cockpit and docking bay shots so much more dynamic. Also, removing the rat things entirely from the Mos Eisley entrance really improved the shot.

As for the red R2 unit, I can see the issue, but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Seeing it in split-screen with the original is probably the issue. If there’s another fix, I’d embrace it too.

Seeing that the “Extended Death Star” battle is now no longer being a thing, could it be a possible deleted scene under your Bluray Special Features?

There’s a hell of a lot of work that would be involved in recreating that whole scene in HD and i feel it would be time best spent on working on finishing the trilogy, so it’s a no i’m afraid.

That’s all good. Even if you do include the original 480p version that you created, I’m sure that will be more than enough. Most films have deleted scenes that look rough compared to the finished product anyway so it wouldn’t be an issue IMHO…

You know, something that’s always bugged me about ANH and its Special Edition is that in the final shot of the ships headed back to Yavin after the Death Star’s destruction, the Falcon model enters frame from the left but then moves into the center of the frame without substantially changing orientation. https://youtu.be/tYZuOSZj2wg?t=483

The Falcon model clearly starts turning left as it enters frame, as expected, but then it stops turning and just continues almost straight forward with its nose pointed well to the right of Yavin and its engines firing to the left. It’s a really bizarre movement that I would have thought Lucas would have changed in the SE like he did in so many other weird model shots.

Of course, I imagine it would be difficult for Ady to fix this issue since it would require rigging and filming a whole new model (practically or digitally) to put in that shot.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Has anybody ever thought to deepfake Denis Lawson’s face over that other Wedge actor during the briefing scene?

Now, finally getting to watch the latest video on my 83" LG OLED is having me excited for the final release. Just looks gorgeous and I’m digging the choice of music too with Gustav Holst’s Mars, The Bringer of War - a piece I’ve been more accustomed to that was arranged by Emerson, Lake & Powell as the closing track off their 1986 album of the same name. Yes, that’s right - Cozy Powell, as Carl Palmer was still involved with Asia during that period in time. 😉

Thank you for sharing the comparison reel, Ady, and as always it looks incredible! Watched it several times now and even once with your original ANH:R playing for comparison also. It’s fun to see how your talents have grown over the years and I can’t imagine it looking even better than this, so now, truly, “your skills are complete” 😃

Loved seeing all the various fixes and enhancements in the clip but one of my favorites (and I’m surprised nobody else mentioned it) is the occasional glow effect you’re implementing with some of the laser bolts, especially noticeable during the trench run; I think a small but substantial detail like that goes a long way for making them look even more real and therefore further immerses you in the action!

Well we didn’t see a K2 security droid walking by during that elevator scene but my fingers are still crossed that we still might get a surprise for either the full version of the scene or in a hallway elsewhere on the Death Star 😉 Ooh, or maybe (also) a couple/few K2 droids at the end of the hallway during the “Han chasing storm troopers scene” (no idea if you’re planning to keep the SE edit or revert it to be simpler and more like the original).

…The only thing that still bothers me is when the rebels are flying away after the Death Star explodes, the Falcon always looked like it was flying crooked, like it’s not facing completely forward. I don’t know if I’m explaining it well enough, but the trajectory and the ship’s angle don’t seem to match…

Yeah you guys aren’t alone about this. What helped me all these years, justifying the MF’s semi-awkward movement, is thinking that it is simply doing a little space drifting right there, lol. If Ady decides to do a touch-up on it after all, that’d be awesome, but if not, I’ll continue my space drift theory 😄

As for the “red Artoo” talk, I wasn’t bothered by the color change but understand the comments about it and agree maybe there could be another better way. Very curious now to see the alternate idea you’re already exploring for improving that shot, Ady. I’m supposing it’ll be easier to replace it with something new than removing the “red artoo” entirely.
